Some release news from a couple days ago. Per Short's website:

"Elk Rapids, Mich. – In true Short’s fashion, just one month in advance of their biggest party of the year, Short’s Brewing Company announces the addition of the Salvacious Planemo Sour Series and Slurm to their 2017 Release Schedule. The Salvacious Planemo Sour Series will begin with the release of Anni Ale 13irteen, a dry hopped American Sour Ale with black currants. Slurm, Short’s first New England style India Pale Ale, will be distributed in May. Both new releases will be served on tap at Short’s Anni Party 13irteen.

"A departure from Short’s Anni Ale ‘09 – ‘16, Anni Ale 13irteen will be released first at Short’s thirteenth anniversary party. This American Sour Ale will head to shelves and taps in Michigan and throughout Short’s expanded distribution footprint (Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin) beginning May 1st.

"Fans of past Short’s releases Peachy Pom Pom and Wishful Sinful have much to look forward to. Subsequent Salvacious Planemo Sour Series releases include Exeter, a new American Sour Ale with strawberry and lemon and the eventual return of Critterless. First released in the fall of 2016, Critterless is an American Sour Ale with mango and cherry that quickly proved to be a fan favorite."

Official announcement for Freedom is up on the Short's website:

"April means spring, #SBCANNIPARTY13, and the release of one very special, guava-fied brew. Born of a trip to Chicago, a dedication to larger than life brews, and a mutual admiration of the Band Ween, everyone’s favorite collaboration beer is back on store shelves and pouring from taps this week! Originally brewed in collaboration with our friends at Half Acre Beer Co. in Chicago over the course of two Ween filled weekends, Freedom of ‘78 has been winning over hearts and taste buds of craft beer fanatics since 2010.

Freedom of ‘78 (8.0% ABV – 70 IBU) is a medium-bodied IPA brewed with guava. This IPA is bright and clear with a pleasing bronze hue. The beer’s aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit and subtle pine. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss with flavors of tangerine, nectarine, and even faint honey detectable. The finish is bitter and dry."

Cat's Pajamas only served to whet my appetite for Freedom. This one is my third-highest rated beer, and one of the IPAs that eased me into the world of hops. Do not miss your chance to get your face rocked off.

Has Freedom always been 8%? I thought previous years were a lower ABV (like 6% or so). It certainly doesn't drink like an 8%...

Anyway I hope we'll see this again in Chicago. One of my favorite beers of all time. Fond memories of trading some Dark Lord for a case of it a couple years ago when I couldn't make the trip out to Michigan to grab some.

The article says kegs will be available throughout the Great Lakes footprint, but bottles will be in MI, IN, OH, PA, and WI. So maybe you'll be able to get it on tap in Chicago? It may have to do with it being a collaboration with Half Acre, I don't know.

Most beer, especially craft, I prefer to pour into a glass. Obviously there are exceptions, and I can dome cans and bottles with the best of them. I'm just saying I generally prefer the experience more when it's poured into proper (or even improper at times) glassware.

On to my point. Had dinner out with the fam. Had a couple Oberons on tap. Got home and checked the beer fridge for a brew to bathe the boys and get them into bedtime mode. I chose The Curl. Being sorta lazy decided to just drink from the bottle rather than pour it.

Gotta say, I liked it before but this time it is so much better! I mean it literally tastes better than when I poured it into a glass.

TLDR: does The Curl taste better straight from the bottle? Methinks so.

What would your dream Shorts sampler pack be? No restrictions. I'd have to say that mine would be.
    Peaches and Cream
    Raisin Apollo
    Black Licorice Lager
    PB and Banana......
    Then a secondary sampler lol
    Van Dammage
    Yer My Boy Blue
    Honey Badger
    Superfluid

Bottles were available last year in Chicago. I will be terribly disappointed if this is draft only. although it gives me an excuse to road trip to Michigan.

does anyone have any more insight into the availability in Chicago this year? thanks.

Hot diggity. Freedom this year is fantastic! Very intense guava aroma which I love, and the guava flavors are great. One of my top 5 faves from Short's I'd say.

I know it's been mentioned, but I think 8% is definitely an increase from last year. Could be wrong, but I remember 6.7% or 6.9%? Oh well, this is so damn smooth and tasty. Cheers.

Yes, and it's still listed as 6.9% on Beermenus. A lot of Short's brews have had their ABV upped in the last year due to new, more accurate measuring equipment. Check out this episode of the Short's Cast for details. This is what I listen to while mowing the lawn.

On the opposite side, I could have sworn years ago that Soft Parade was 9-10%, but it's listed as 7.5%.
