That's one of the ones the brewery ages in their eiskeller for a few years before releasing it.

I'd agree with you on the "more time." I once had the opportunity to drink more than one bottle of the 3 year and the 5 year brewer aged releases. In addition that opportunity lasted for about two years as I seem to have been the only one conuming the supply this restaurant had acquired.

The bottles were all kept chilled but even then I thought the 5 year old release had started to decline just a wee bit by the time it was 7.

Enjoying, Harpoon Frosthammer, a bit sweet to start, alcohol is hidden well.
young dark fruit, a bit of roasted malt, nice linger of slightly sweet brown sugar.
    Finish with time is dry.

I have an 06 left but have focused on the window of 3-5 years, not much oxidation in this 2001,
that said more a cordial now. Mouth feel is brandy like in texture.
    Cheers

Good to hear. My experience with the eiskeller aged versions didn't extend much beyond 2 years access to the 5 year aged version. Eventually the place I was drinking them sold the last one.... :slight_frown:

But I'll also second your recommendation of buying either version if seeing it. I think I'd be willing to go for a whole case, just to have them for myself and sharing with a few friends.

Remember folks -- Maibock, not Doppelbock or Eisbock... just sayin'. Very different range of beer character.

    Rustic Road, Kenosha, WI
    Springs Back Maibock

My first sampling of a beer from this new(ish) local(ish) brew-pub, and a favorite style. Full disclosure: the brewers at this pub are old home-brew club friends, so I'm a little biased to start with, but I'm also biased to this style of beer -- anything goes!

Poured from a 12 ounce longneck into my short Becher glass.

L -- Deep amber color with a dense, off-white head that stands strong. 4.25

S -- Bready malts and spicy hops, light DMS, some mild fruit characters and mild peppery alcohol. 4

T -- Big bready malt character up front that blends into a mildly fruity flavor, but immediately gives way to peppery alcohol. The finish is more rich, bready malts, but there's a somewhat astringent character that fights an herbal hop character for dominance. 3.75

F -- Mouthfeel is soft to slick with a dry finish and a medium to light-full body. 4

O -- This is a well-made German-style lager, if not for the odd astringency in the aftertaste. However, that fault is not so big or distracting as to make the beer undrinkable. The sweetish, chewy malts are delicious in a very German style without becoming soda-pop sweet. I think Tom & Bill may have taken some inspiration from Summit for this beer, it's very similar to their Maibock -- and that's a good comparison. On the other hand, nearly 8% ABV makes this beer dangerous -- a true "Mindblock." 4

Einbecker Ainpockisch Bier. Cloudy Heller Urbock. 6.7% ABV.

cloudy gold. Lacing of head sticks around. Smell is slight skunk, sweet dough, slight hops ( semi spicy, floral) taste is like sweet pretzel dough, semi spicy black pepper similarity, dry herbaceous hops. Slightly grassy. Touch of alcohol. Drying feel makes me take another sip. Overall very nice. It was halfway gone before I knew it. From my review.

    @steveh

Was this the beer you mentioned yesterday?

Afternoon all - Im going to get my first maibock in now with some Masters action before we head out to meet some friends for dinner. I'm starting off with the Hofbrau maibock.

Really well made maibock - this one is clearly fresh. Aroma is bready initially, but the more I get acquainted with the aroma, I start to get some spicy earthy hops on the nose with a peppery yeast - its not like a belgian yeast, but there is a spice to it. Flavor is very bready with some caramel malts, doughy yeast, and a spicy hop finish. A touch of sweetness is there, but in a background complimentary way. The hops really pop in this one and I like it. Feel is fuller yet very drinkable.

Overall, I'd say this is solidly in the "outstanding" category as an example of the style - at least when compared to the examples I have had or am going to drink today.

I'm starting with the "UR" today-
    [IMG]
    Einbecker Mai-Ur-Bock
I'm thoroughly enjoying this one. Color is crystal clear golden copper. The malts have a deep and saturated quality, but not overdone by a long shot- bready, toasty, even toffee-like, and they really pop. Hops contribute a noticeable underlying spicy/grassy quality, and a clear, clean snap of bitterness. The palate is moderately full and seemingly sweet, but, most importantly, finishes nice and dry, with a long lingering bread crust character. There's such a great harmony of flavors, and it's so easy drinking it's nearly gone before you know it. Fantastic!

Thanks to the esteemed team who started this oh so 3 years ago.
Beginning to Rock with this years first bottle of home brewed all grain
Maibock, I dialed back the malt bill a bit this year and voila, just enough caramel note
and a nice dry finish courtesy of that Bavarian yeast strain.

I'm so glad I saw this post! I was one of the reviews for this beer and thought I was crazy with the green apple flavor. That was only the 2nd maibock I've had so I'm not well versed in the style, but knew that couldn't be right.

Your review and decription of the flavors are so eloquent and well written, A++. Makes my review look like a glorified "tart green apple, ewww yucky."

L 12324058 19- I have no clue what it means, and there doesn't seem to be a way to find it on line. I got it because I was familiar with the beer, and also because I was having the hardest time finding any Maibocks at all.

    First up was Hofbrau Maibock
    [IMG]
11.2oz bottle poured into a Becker glass displays a light copper/dark gold amber colored body and floats a fluffy creamy yellow head that falls to barely an edge hugging ring. Spotted lacing.

Aroma is bready; it's all about the malt.

Flavor is bread, a hint of caramel, nutty almost.

Medium, leaning light, with a slick feel and clean finish.

Really tasty. If I liked futbol, this would be what I spilled in jubilation.

Second was a great local effort from Pollyanna. Nose Over Tail Maibock
    7.0% abv
    [IMG]
2017 brewed and crowler filled 04/01/17 at the brewery.
    Poured into a Bayern stein.
Dark gold body floating 1/2 in fluffy off-white head, slowly disippating to a light cap and edge ring.

Bready malt aroma dominates hints of vanilla, caramel, and slight stone fruit.

Flavor matches including a taste I can only describe as peach fuzz. I know that is ordinarily observed as a feel, rather than a flavor, but it is closer to the entry to the initial bite of a peach, rather than the taste of the flesh itself. So, I will call it peach fuzz flavor. There is no peach flavor just a hint of something in the malt that gives me this additional taste memory.

Feel is medium, leaning lighter, with a clean finish.

Very well done local version of a German standard.
Very complimentary examples of the Maibock standard.
Hofbrau is brighter and spicier and has a slicker mouthfeel. Pollyanna is darker and deeper flavor with hints of fruit. But they match in color, aroma, deliciocity, and desire for more.

Thanks to our great hosts: @WesMantooth, @Lingenbrau and @LeperJim for a fine introduction/reminder to the Maibock style. This is why I love BA. THE resource for beer research.

Tasty brew, but definitely not the same to me, as it is now. We'll see how the other's compare today.

    12 oz. Bottle

Been a few years since last I've had this brew.

Pours a pretty nice clean/clear golden amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a nice small creamy off-white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, slight banana/clove, spice. The taste is malty, slight banana/clove note, spicy. Medium body, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, this is a tasty brew.

Well, this is my first Rogue and first Maibock. Pours a cloudy copper color with nice carbonation and alot of lacing. Scents of hops, citrus, spices. This brew has a very nice and unique taste of sweet/bitter malt. There's a medium body. The lacing just does not want to disappear. The brew is very drinkable at 6.5%, highly recommended.

    Cheers!

Cross-post with WBAYDN. High Point brews an excellent Maibock. It is delicate with a touch of honey and toffee along with bready malt. Here's my review:

    4.03/5 rDev +0.8%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

2017 vintage. Poured from 32 oz. growler into Ramstein pint glass. It pours a clear, honey-amber color with one finger of milk-white head and lacing. It smells of bready malt, banana, clove, floral hops, and a whiff of toffee. The taste is sweeter than the smell with lots of bready malt, toffee,, and a hint of honey. It finishes dry, smooth, and slightly bitter. It's fairly light in body with pleasant carbonation, and it is very drinkable with a manageable ABV of 7%. Overall, it's a very nice rendition of the Maibock style. Ramstein is very good at brewing authentic German beers, and its Maibock is no exception. Prost!
