    Hi guys,

Novice beer snob here (under 2years drinking almost exclusively craft beers), but about to endeavor on a serious weightloss diet. My plan says no beer/alcohol, but that ain't gonna work for me. I need a compromise beer, a light beer but with flavor. Something 150 calories or less for a 12oz bottle/can and with flavor. Can be craft or pseudo-craft, no AB InBev products, though.

    My thoughts go to....
    -Shiner Light Blonde
    -Sam Adams Light
    -Abita Light

Looking for other ideas. Must be available in the Houston, Texas area without special ordering. We have some local craft brands, but none that claim to be light.... Karbach (Now AB-InBev), Saint Arnold, No Label, 8th Wonder, Southern Star....

Is there such thing as a "light" IPA?

I might look into the Luponic Distortion series...? It's lighter, and has caught criticism for being so light considering it's a hop showcase.

Pivo pils is 158 cals. Try some helles, vienna lager, Berliner Weiss, etc. You'll be surprised what beers fill the void.

Not sure about calorie count, but Pilsner Urquell is very tasty and feels light!

Uinta makes some tasty 4% ABV brews (thanks to those odd Utah liquor laws) and they distribute to Texas. Their Baba black lager is particularly flavorful given the light body.

(Essentially) Cal = abv x 30cal. "Light" beers are mostly in the 125-135cal range. Plenty of good options that are similar, or fewer calories.
Most gose & berliner weisse are in the 4% range. Some even less. Many wild ales also. Most Dry Irish Stouts are in the 4-5% range, with a few even lower.
Cortland Naked Lap Lager is good, though slightly higher, @ 4.9%.

    Narragansett Light

Funny you bring up this subject, I plan on stocking up on a bunch of those new gansett Light 12 packs when I go back to back home to MA next weekend...

EDIT: I just noticed that you live in TX. My bad. I would opt for Lone Star Light (136 calories). As others have said though, if your looking strictly st calories, Guinness is probably your best bet (as far as flavor vs caloric content)

Sours are usually good. I'm enjoying a À Tout Le Monde at 4.5% right now.

That being said as someone who dropped from 300 pounds to getting into bodybuilding...I basically just do hard core zero carb/keto cutting diets at 1800-2000 calories day with 1 cheat day a week where I eat/drink whatever I want.

Currently still dropping 2-3 lbs a week from 205 down to 182 as of today. Sucks during the week but delayed gratification is something plus I like having abs.

To answer the question Sam Adams Light. Having said that there are a lot, and I mean hundreds if not thousands, of regular beers out there that contain less than 150 calories in a 12 oz serving.

    Mich Ultra - 95

    Coors Light - 102
    Miller Lite - 96
    Keystone Light - 104

    Corona Light - 99

I would think that those session IPAs fit this bill, Founders All Day is 147 calories so that would work.

I watch my weight as well but I think that it just takes a little planning ahead and self discipline, as what is the difference if you drink two 150 calorie beers or one 300 calorie beer?

Lose the weight first, and gradually put beer back into your regular diet.

But for what it's worth I've been able to lose weight and still drink, just gotta count the calories, all of 'em. It's doable.

    2nd Guinness. At 10 calories/oz -- it's tough to be for flavor. I lost 20 lbs about 10 years ago on a 1 16oz can a day ration.

I'm not a Founders die hard, but for a light IPA, go for the All Day, and for a pilsner, go for the PC Pils. For a dark beer, I recommend a Guinness or a Baba Black Lager

All this being said, if you are strictly looking at calories, then a light lager is your best bet. However, a flavorful craft beer, though caloric, can be beneficial for your health. A dark beer with roasted barley is even healthier because unmalted roasted barley retains it's nutrients. Hops also are beneficial. Good luck with your weight loss

I have no way of knowing how many calories are in a beer unless the brewer specifically says so, but if I go by the general rule of thumb that lower abv = less calories, there's a ton of good beers 5% or less. Many pilsners, gose, Berliner Weissbier, some lambics, Irish dry stouts, some porters, session IPAs, and a few other types of lagers such as Vienna lagers and schwarzbier are often under 5%

I maintain my weight while drinking beer by doing it this way. I have only 2, any style. I prefer the pilsner and the lager styles so that puts me in the 150 calorie per glass range. Then do not drink any soda and no desserts. No sugar other than beer. You can keep your carbs for now but watch your portions. In other words beer is another bread. So if you have a hamburger and that's your bread you can't have beer. it naturally works itself to where you can have two beers but fitting in more is too difficult.
