    Happy Friday, BAs!

Recently, I've seen a couple breweries barrel-aging IPAs and have been slightly intrigued, as well as very curious.

Who has insight into these? What do they taste like?

    Thanks!

I get the barrel aged barleywine taste from them. Founders doom will be out next month so you'll have a chance at one

I had a barrel aged DIPA from Breckenridge I think. It was actually quite good, IMO

I remember a special IPA for Bestway Grocery made by Olde Hickory that was oak aged. I love Bestway and Olde Hickory, but that beer- while well made- was a tough one. As I recall, the hop vibrancy was muted by the oak heaviness. The crisp zip that I Iove in IPAs was lost with the oak.

I guess DFH Burton Baton qualifies, but it's not aged in bourbon barrels and it's blended with a fresh batch prior to bottling. That's probably why it works so well.

In Florida, Swamp Head has made a bourbon barrel-aged version of 10-10-10 for several years. Not sure if they did one in 2016 though. In 2015, Stone and Sierra Nevada collaborated on a barrel-aged DIPA. There's also Genesee's Imperial Black IPA aged in bourbon barrels.

Barrels let in O2, at a low rate, but they are not impervious.

So let me get this straight. IPAs should be consumed as soon as possible, so that the hop aromatics are not lost. Aging one in a barrel is good, because - barrel!

    Doom didn't work for me.

I know, I was trying to be kind to the concept. The barrel and the hops seem to be almost opposite notions.

Couldnt you barrel age a big IPA, then keg dry hop/serving vessel dry hop the crap out of it for added aroma values?

Otherwise, it may just be a barleywine

Zero Gravity in Burlington has released a Barrel Aged Conehead with Brett, aka Barrel Aged Bretthead. It's really delicious, actually. (Last year it was called Conehead and this year, Bretthead. Both years were surprisingly tasty.)

I'm not sure of the barrel type but I think it may have been gin? There was a complexity of flavor without the hop fading that would have been expected.

I was also turned off by DOOM, but the sweetness of bourbon clashes with the hops on my palate. I would like to try a gin barrel iPa though.

Barrel Aged IPA come across as a bit of an oxymoron, like hoppy pilsner, but until I try I don't know what I am talking about.

I've recommended Victory Prima Pils to a few Bud drinking friends...to a person they said it was too bitter. I think Prima is refreshing and unique.

Yes you could. It might not cover up oxidized flavors.

I had an oak aged IPA from Montana.

I actually really enjoyed it. A little flat, but overall awesome. It was an experience enough that I want to try more. Not a style I want to focus on, but I'm interested in more.

Love Burton Baton, probably for the reason you posted. It's amazing at the brewpub for sure. Here in NJ, I can only think of Kane's Parhelion, and unfortunately it's ok, but probably my least favorite Kane hoppy beer. I love crazy experimenting in general, but I don't think barrel-aging really helps IPAs.
