I was a DLD virgin last year, so I'll try to be helpful...

Waiting in line to get in is your first chance to share. It may or may not be your best chance. It's not like there's not going to be any beer at 11. There are a ton of people passing stuff around inside. There will also be a sizeable line to get in until mid-afternoon most likely, so you'll still get some of the experience regardless. Really the only place I wasn't offered beer was while I was in the pickup line, and that's only if you don't count the "pre-line" (I was Group B, so I went a bit early to try to get some sweet, sweet vanilla).

A couple of things I picked up from last year. I'm sure I'll forget some things.

    1) Drink water. I failed miserably.

    2) Eat something, at least to slow down your consumption a bit. I failed miserably.

    3) Be ready for rain. Even if the forecast is 100% clear, I'm putting a poncho in my bag. I thought I was ready, but I was drenched. Luckily, I was too drunk to care.

    4) Somewhat related: poncho/rain jacket over umbrella. Otherwise you're stuck holding it all day, making it much harder to retrieve beer and pour. On a similar note, I had a lanyard to hold my drinking glass, which helped considerably (I got something right!).

    5) Don't panic too much about the beer you're bringing. I spent way too much time worrying about it last year, and I brought way too much. You can bring just about anything and someone will invariably have something better/rarer/sexier. I would suggest 4 or 5 bombers per person personally. You can adjust up if you're pretty confident your stuff will move, or down if someone in your party isn't as big a drinker.

Smaller format beers are also a good move. It seemed like a lot of people around me were walking around with a half empty bomber after the first few pours.

    6) Talk to people. The will probably offer you cool beer.

    7) Try to keep an eye on your stuff as much as possible. I somehow held on to my allotment, but at least one person near me lost it. It seemed to help if you kept it in your backpack instead of the tote bag.

    8) Speaking of which, don't trust the tote bag.

I'm sure there's a ton more I missed that others will fill in between the bullshit.

I wasn't able to secure any tickets on line.

When should I expect my miracle to arrive in the mail?

I'm somewhat amazed I wasn't. I passed the point of no return while waiting to get into the pickup line.

I think it was the pours that did me in. I was doing okay, but then a guy in my group kept grabbing DL pours and some Dwarven Power Bottom, then I grabbed some Jai Alai for the line. I don't really remember the pickup process much, but I got my bottles and an FVM to boot, so someone was looking out for me.

I didn't even drink that much after about 1, and I was still smashed when I left at 5. I didn't throw up, pass out, or end up in any photos that I've seen, so I guess that was a success?

For starters, the shares last all day. As the day goes on people start running lower on supply and are increasingly intoxicated, therefor the shares become a little more hit or miss. Tip to get in a nice solid share: Squeeze into the crowded ass tent with the DJ playing, crack open a nice beer (whale or near whale status improves the following significantly) and ask people if they'd like a pour. This method has gotten my friends and I involved in some nice shares.
That being said, water and food. Lots of both. Every 1-2 pours I rinse out my glass and drink an equal amount of water. I eat before DLD, just after entering, and later on. Bring snacks with as well. After every few pours and water snack a bit. I've done this every Dark Lord Day I've been to and remembered everything, every time. So you have to pee more and you might have to sh*t in a port o potty...it's not that bad. Pro tip: Throw some bleach wipes in a freezer bag and push the air out before closing, takes up little space in a backpack. Wipe the seat before you or the wife has to go.
And finally, don't plan on too much. Pace yourself and enjoy everything you can. DLD has a way of dictating most of what you end up doing.

    Tomorrow.

Sorry, I had to. It'll start early as usual. I've got to DLD at around 830 when the gates open at 10 and there was easily 200 people i
The south line has historically moved fast. Last year we got there an hour and a half early. The line was pretty damn big. We were in pretty damn quick. I'm in group A and the allotment line starts at 9 when the gates open (it used to be 1/2 hour after gates open). I'll be there by 7:30 and I'm not worried.

Anyone from group A taking an Uber from Chicago? I live in Lincoln Park and would prefer to take an earlier Uber vs. the 8AM shuttle.
