I've been waiting to crack this open all morning: Funky Buddha's Wide Awake It's Morning imperial coffee maple bacon porter.

The maple really dominates on the nose and the palate. If you found Southern Tier's Creme Brulee too sweet, you should probably pass on this. For everyone else:

Wow! I've never had the original MBCP (this is the imperial version of it), but this is a crazy beer.

The maple syrup is really strong on the nose, nearly drowning out any smokiness, coffee, and roasted barley - but not quite. On the palate, the syrup comes through in varying strengths at different times: up front, there's an almost vanilla-like sweetness, and some of the coffee manages to make it through, accompanied by a bit of roasted barley.

Around the midpoint, though, woody maple syrup really starts to take over, until it dominates the back third. The absolute finish - long after I'd normally still be looking for flavors, and instead just grabbing another sip - brings back a touch of smoky bacon, along with some char and coffee.

Sticky sweet and fairly full bodied. Incredibly easy to drink for 10%. I reserve the right to update my rating as I go, but right now:

Fun tangent: I got my sister into craft beer less than a year ago. She really wanted to like beer, but she'd never found anything that really meshed with her tastes. I figured lambics were a good start, and as she had mentioned really liking this exceptionally bitter Greek wine, I figured why not: let's try IPAs, too.

I bought her a couple flights, trying things out. Hefe: no. Pils: no. Flavored stouts: nuh uh. But lambics, IPAs (non-piney), and surprisingly gueuze were all home runs!

She calls me for beer advice every now and then. Last night she called me with a question (paraphrased): "Hey, didn't you once tell me that Funky Buddha's Maple Bacon Coffee Porter is kind of the beer that really put them on the map? Because I'm standing in the aisle, and there's one bottle out here, clearly not supposed to be, either; it's by a bunch of other random stuff. Want me to get it?"

*sniff* I've never been more proud of her in my life. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the background and review, I've been really curious about what the deal with these "milkshake" beers is - it certainly sounds like kind of a wild recipe!

Are the white specks near the bottom of the glass simply bubbles or is that particulate/floaties? Also, do you have any thoughts on what the pectin addition ends up contributing? I would have expected that to make for a strange (or at least unique) mouthfeel but it sounds like it stayed pretty safely in the standard "soft" arena.

Any plans to try and make one of these?

Great review! AB Noir was probably my least favorite BA beer from prairie. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but the sweetness was too much. Although, as I've had them age a little the sweetness seems to mellow out a bit. The bottle you had was about one year old. I'll be back later with a couple Aslin beers from you to return the favor!

    New Orleans Sunday

I love history, even if I lack the ability to retain most of it. Today I learned a little as I was reading a few articles about New Orleans/ Chicory style coffee. Long story short, during the Civil War the Union blocked the entry ports and coffee was obviously affected. In order to stretch supplies, they used chicory, which along with warm milk became an area tradition. Here is more about it for anyone interested:

    "2017 Annual Release" in a 16oz can

It pours a glossy black. Looks fairly viscous. It has a very minimal, quickly dissipating, fizzy, tan head with a fairly aggressive pour. When I say fizzy, I mean audible fizzy. When I dumped the last few ounces into the glass it sounded and looked like a cola.

The aroma is very red wine/ currants dominant at first, with a bit of coffee. After letting it warm and breathe for a few minutes, the coffee grows stronger, and lactose sugars and a spicy (as in cardamom/cinnamon) chocolate becomes noticeable. A unique aroma. There is some faint oak in the background along with some tobacco and licorice, and the wine starts to subside a little.

The initial flavor is all red wine. A semi sweet, semi sour dark grape along with some sweetened/condensed milk. Then there is a tobacco that I would expect in a Russian Imperial followed by some chocolate, a mystery spice, a very good, very smooth iced/cold press coffee, some bourbon finally makes an appearance with a little charred oak and vanilla along with some roasted malt in the lingering finish.

The body is on the fuller side and it has a bit of creaminess to it. The alcohol is fairly well integrated.

I have been all over the place with this beer. I bet I adjusted each score at least 3 times. Ultimately, the beer is all over the place too. There are some good things going on here, and they had a great idea to work of off, but as much as I like introducing stouts to wine barreles, this isn't one that worked really well as it introduced flavors not characteristic to a milk stout. Even an "imperial" one. Overall I enjoyed it. Mostly the coffee aspect though.

I leave you with some spring

Pours black. Thick, medium, light brown head lasts a long time.

Smells cocoa, chocolate, roasted malts, light char, coffee and light alcohol.

Tastes roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and earthy bitterness. Followed by hints of dark fruits and char. Dry finish and a light bitter linger. Medium body and smooth medium carbonation.

Lighter in taste than smell. Lighter body than expected
    ..........................................
Onto the glass. Produces great aromas and produces a good head. A touch too thick which causes some beer to run down outside when taking a sip.

I'm sorry to hear that. We had to do that to one of our dogs years ago. He ended up having a liver disease. He was clearly not functioning right and in the end, he bit the person he loved the most. Very sad, tough choice to make.

I was just reading @WesMantooth review above and @cjgiant 's remark; "Give the review and explain your ratings." . This is how I scored the beer.

This is for Uinta's Lime pilsner which I liked more than the score will tell you. The question that I do not think belongs in the beer review is "Would you buy it again?" That is up to you. And whether I do or not is irrelevant as to the quality of the beer.

The 3.5 is for the haze. The 3.25 on the nose is because the nose is mostly lime and not malt. I liked the nose 3.75 worth though. The taste is excellent and I liked it very much but it is sweet. Overall I liked it a 3.75 because it tastes good. I think the addition worked well but did change the beer considerably. I gave it a 3.5 because it is not to style.

    New Grapefruit Juice Sunday

Throw away the Tropicana, BA, this is what you need for breakfast...

    Bottled 3/31/17, 5.3% abv...

Medium gold body, opaque with haze under a bright white head that left plenty of lace sheeting behind. Grapefruit comes across big - like someone ripped the fruit open and the juice sprayed over a bed of freshly-planted flowers in wet, dark soil. Bright and fresh zesty aromas were followed by more grapefruity impressions on the sip. The drink had at once a drying quality, something dank and earthy, and the distinct powdery sweet-tart vibe that I associate with lupulin powder and double dry hopping... The feel is tingly and light, with big bitterness enveloping the tongue, and the aforementioned drying coming through on the finish. No idea about the hops used - part of the "X" factor, I guess - but this was a real grand slam, possibly the best APA I've ever had... Ratings-wise, it just edged out Zombie Dust for my top spot by a hair... :grimacing:

Finishing off the bomber and heading over to WBAYDN...

Thank you! Are you gonna have a Prairie Apple Brandy Noir next?

I kinda figured that one out, but this one I did need to look up:
    WTF am I talking about??

Johann apparently bought a broat, spawning an Aslin beer named for the event: Johann Buys a Broat. I mentioned yesterday that the Aslin beer that @Dragginballs76 was drinking was a Mind the Hop varietal renamed. I mixed up the descriptions, as this is the beer that makes a claim here on BA. Either way, in this case, pineapple, Mandarin oranges, and vanilla are added as ingredients to a NE IPA base beer.

As @JackHorzempa has been on his journey, I have been hitting up Aslin, who makes many a NE IPA, a bit more recently. They have the capacity to meet a level of demand that doesn't require line waiting. There has been a mild concern with some drop in quality as they ramp up, but my past experiences with the beers were always on tap, so I can't say. (Side note: they also make some nice Gose, one of which was supposed to be released this past week, but ended up being growler only.)

I got those shots above in varying light. I gotta say, I still think a large number of these beers are borderline ugly. The darker or more [burnt] orange they are, the worse. This is usually countered by a nice sustaining head, often with nice lacing - as is true of this beer. It wasn't helped by what appeared like chunks coming out of the can (which I don't see in the beer, but have found often in the bottom of the cans).

Nose is usually wonderfully fruity on these beers, but I'm disappointed on this glass, initially. This beer shows the orange a bit, but I'm actually getting a classic pithy/piney note here. This isn't normally bad, but for a "juicy" (heavily dry-hopped) IPA with pineapple - I expected a bit more juice and strength overall.

Taste starts to make a bit of a turn around on this beer. The oranges are still most notable, but the pineapple at least makes an appearance. As it warms, the pineapple seems to come with a little spice or heat (and at 9.4%, I'm guessing the latter a little more). The beer does have a decent dose of fruit skin bitterness, though. The ending is a bit of orange zest, fruit rind, and pine wood - upon a generically pulpy juice base. The vanilla is either well integrated or just misses my palate.

Funny thing is, looking at my review of "regular" Mind the Hop, I got pineapple and orange/tangerine in the base beer. If this has additional quantities of these, I would think they would come out even more. On its own, this is still a solid beer in the substyle for those who like it. For me, it's not registering as one of the better Aslin beers. The rest of the raters have a disagreement with me, it seems though.

Hoppy New Beer Sunday (Week 635)!

My latest job has me working 2nd shift (1500 to 2300), including Sundays, which kind of curtails an all-day affair of drinking & reviewing beers as in the past. Instead, I default to the familiar meme of the two (probably Belgian) fellows at an outdoor café, one wiping his brow as the other drinks from a goblet as big as his head, with the caption: "One more & we'll head back to work!" Hey, if you may only have one, make it a big one, right?

My big one for the day is a new arrival from New Holland to the FGBS, where I am a member of their infamous Drinking Team.

Congrats!! And truly thank you for your thoughtful reviews (here and on video).

I will say, I love your attention to style, and wish I had that attention for those beers that fit. I do try, and as an example, I will occasionally note simple things like: "this APA is more of an IPA." But some just don't fit, as you well noted.

I will say, I always take overall to mean: how did I enjoy the beer, independent of style, both positive and negative. Now I never don't take style into account here - if I ordered a Pilsner, I am not going to rate it 1.0 because it doesn't taste like that BBA stout I love.

Just my thoughts. I know we have had discussions on these topics around "the numbers." The great thing is I can read or watch your thoughts beyond he numbers, and that's always better, to me. Hence this recurring thread . Cheers to milleninal milestones!!
