Well, this thread turned very serious and assholish quickly after the variant news.

I agree! Why isn't their more outrage about the bands??

Because none of us know anything about metal bands to know if they are "good" metal bands or bad metal bands.

Don't think it's the variant news but the method of distribution. It's like they are punishing people that are primarily going to the fest to obtain the nearly unobtainable variants.

"MUAHAHAHA let's make the people that really want the most coveted variant stand in a line all day long!!!"

I honestly think they have a problem with the culture around beer rarity, which is understandable, but to pull that kind of maneuver on people attending your fest is just harsh, at a minimum.

...And then some intrepid group C ticket holder will stand at the back of the B line to be the first C, all while confusing every B joining the line about where the end is.

The "pre-line" stuff has happened even back when it wasn't a guaranteed variant. This development is only going to magnify the issues with it ten fold unless they're prepared.

All this is making me chortle.

As one who isn't motivated by a variant, I give two shits; in fact, prior to last year, variants were always random anyway, as they gave you a scratch off - what's more random than that? And I had only one winning scratch off once in the however many years there were scratch offs (while my +1 buddy always seemed to win one - so it goes).

So now, we have another change in course, which Floyds does every year, in some form or fashion, and people here are acting like that because it was this way last year, it should always be that way. Floyds always trys to improve the fest - you may not think so, but I was there the year before they went to Golden Tickets, and that was the shit show of all shit shows - there were no "chutes" feeding people into group A, B... or Z, there were two lines - one from the south and one from the north, both merging in front of the brewery. Talk about chaos.

And if I'm reading their post correctly, they say that you shouldn't line up for your bottle group more than a half hour in advance, which is exactly how it was done last year, not that there would be separate lines for group A, B, C. There's only one line to get into the brewery, and they have had someone walking around with the "Group" lineup placard to announce when you could. Same as last year.

The only difference is that the variants will evidently be proportional by group. I really hope that they just hand you a bag when you walk in the brewery, and you get what you get.

    Chortle. Chortle, chortle chortle.

    chortle.

    As you were.

Not caring about a variant is cool, but you seem to misunderstand the gripe.

People would rather it be random, not first come first serve. It's pretty simple, really.

They are forcing people that care (i.e. most attendees) to get in line early to get into the fest, and get in line early for their groups, in order to guarantee an early selection.

Hopefully they come to their senses and change it, because there is no way in hell there is going to be some kind of majority of attendees that follow the suggestion to not line up until a half hour before their time, lol!

And, Floyd's always tries to improve the fest? Hmm...debatable...it's the people that make the fest what it is, unfortunately, and it's the people that are being shat on.

We don't know how things will go once inside. Each groups allotment's may be separated. Example, a group A person isn't allowed an allotment from group B etc. Like a lot of others, I'm not motivated by the variant, but I can understand the frustration. However let's not jump to conclusions until we see how it plays out.

I don't see how anyone is being "shat on", sorry. If its the people that make the fest what it is, then why the gnashing of teeth because the variant distribution process is being altered? Because maybe its more about the variant than anything else? Hypocrisy. Why else would one line up for Group C, D or E more than a half hour in advance, if they are really there for the bottle share and camaraderie?

I've been to DLD every year since 2005, except 2013, which I skipped because 2012 was a shit show - so, what did Floyds do in '13? Expanded the grounds, and spread things out, so when I came back in '14, I was really happy with the changes. So, yes, Floyds always tries to improve the fest; you may or may not like it, but they do. And I'm guessing you didn't attend prior to the time it became a ticketed event?

I'll be hanging around the taps, meeting people, and having a ball - if you or anyone else chooses to stand in a queue, that's on you and them, not on Floyds. I'll be happy to wander into the DL line at the end of my group, get what I get, and head on back out to the fest.

    Cheers!

Preach brotha. Basically the same plan here. I'm not letting my entire day be held hostage by a bottle of beer.

Luckily, I have group B, so I'll probably line up around 10.30ish, but I'm not missing out on everything the fest has to offer.

I know I am only a 2nd year attendee but last year I was group E and I remember being envious of the earlier groups both for choice and for getting it early. I was piss ass drunk when I got my variant and there really weren't many options. This year I got group A tickets and i was elated that I would be able to get my allotment and move on to the share tent and maybe keep an eye on the taps.

Now i am going to still move right on the the share tent and enjoy but I may keep a better eye on the variants for taps because I want to taste Handjee and FVM because of everything I have heard about them. If they had continued like last year my brother and I likely would have each picked one of those. Now I am thinking Handjee, FVM, Ronaldo, BBDL, and then Vintage. The other options are interesting but I would rather build toward a bigger vertical.

I hope we can all have fun and do some serious sharing.

Side note, we should take an epic DA picture that day.

They should just make it Random. Line will move super quick and it won't be a cluster fuck with people waiting in line all day to be the first person in their group. This will be an absolute shit show with people jockeying to move to the front of the line.

I dunno, I have very mixed feelings about this, but my biggest annoyance is that this system was sprung on us long AFTER we all plunked down $180 on tickets. There's no way they randomly came up with this system in the last week, so why couldn't they have made it clear beforehand? It wouldn't have stopped me from trying to get tickets, but it might have for some. Plus, it would have kept a LOT of people from being pissed at them. (I know they don't care, but fuck that, it's crappy to be willfully shitty to your customers.) We knew before buying that there was the chance of vintage DLs, but this might have made a different to people who have now shelled out for tickets, hotels, possibly even a plane ticket, etc.

On top of that, I remain unconvinced that there will be a satisfactory plan to handle the lines that inevitably form for later groups. Tons of drunk people jostling for position, especially when there's now the potential for a #maxprofitz bottle? What could possibly go wrong?!

Don't get me wrong - I think it's cool to make it fairer to later groups in terms of selection. Hell, I honestly think it should either be 100% random or an online first-come first-serve system with pickup any time of the day you want so you know going in what to expect. I just want them to not be so damned cagey about the whole thing.

Quick guide, one guy's opinion, your mileage may vary etc.:

    - Amon Amarth: Imagine a bunch of Vikings formed a metal band.
    - High on Fire: Imagine three stoners on serious benzos took a bunch of trucker speed and wrote some songs. The best act on the bill by a mile IMHO (and this will be their fourth? DLD).
    - Goatwhore: Imagine a thrash band with a vocalist who sounds a little like Gollum but a few octaves lower.
    - River Black: Imagine a group of musicians with a pretty solid metal pedigree playing music of some sort. (I don't know this band at all.)
    - Powermad: Imagine it's 1989 and you're sitting in the parking lot of Galaxy World in Carol Stream listening to WVVX. Features Todd Haug on guitar.

I find it somewhat interesting that some folks think it's strange people are so set on getting a good variant. We're on BA, which is full of beer obsessed people, and many that want to get the beer they want (and I'm not even saying that's due to trade, reputation or whatever).

Being in group B, I was definitely hoping for a shot at Handjee or FVM, and I'm still hoping for it. I'll probably get there a bit earlier now to try and give myself a better chance. I don't consider getting in line right upon entering holding me hostage or making me miss out on a ton. I'll still be with a bunch of people looking to share great beer, so it seems ok. Not the way I had it in my head, but DLD apparently never goes quite how you expect.

That seems an odd assumption given FFF's history.
