I would lean latter, especially if I'm getting odds. As I said before, I don't expect everything to be organized well enough to prevent that.

That said, as a Group B person that is expecting to get there early and line up early, I'm not expecting to game the system unless I somehow wind up with vintage. I'd be very happy with 3 and can tolerate another 3. Just not totally thrilled with the prospect of scotch.

I'm hoping they have a point of sale system by group. You are group A and you show up at the front of group C, they don't say "You have your choice of anything in group C" they look at your A badge and then check inventory allocated for group As and say "you want 2 vintages or the Temeculon 3000 we found in the back?"

I'm just going to give my 2nd ticket to a Munster Police Officer and have him flash his badge to get us to the front of the group "Official police business, please step aside."

I've read all the responses to your post, and no has a good reason, except what I 'll call DLD fever.

If, as most here intimate, Dark Lord Day is about the bottle share and camaraderie, then why the worry about variants? If you aren't motivated by a variant, then why get in line in advance of your group's time? Because my guess is that half of the people in line aren't in line to drink that variant/allotment, but rather to trade or sell it outright. And I have as much basis for that wild ass speculation as does anyone else on the thread who is predicting lines from hell, mass chaos, and fist fights.

Of course most people care about the variant. FFF charged us in advance for it, at a pretty nice rate too. I believe it was $50 the last time it wasn't part of the whole package. Is it ALL of the value? No, but I personally wouldn't pay $180 without it and I doubt I'm the only one.

There's also a big difference in demand, or "value" if you want to assume we're selling or trading it (I drank my FVM last year and will again). It's like the walking into a restaurant and having the maƮtre d say "we're going to charge you $200 for this meal. However, we only have 50 prime dry-aged ribeyes available and 50 lobsters. The rest of you get the soup of the day cooked in the chef's shoe. First come first serve, but don't like up before we open!"

A lot of people do want a "good" (I realize that is subjective) variant even just to drink on their own. I'm one of those. I would prefer to get no "worse" than Bourbon DL, while also eager to try a Handjee, as I've never had it. So, the way it stands now with the setup, which is not a certainty, is that I can basically get there early to stand in line and share (which I was pretty much going to do anyway), then get in line for group B early and share...which is the same thing I was going to do if I were standing underneath a tent or somewhere else at the fest. Seems like a pretty good option for me to do basically the same thing I would be doing anyway, yet perhaps get a chance at a bottle I've wanted to try.

Of course, I generally act civilized and am aware that there are many people out there that are a bit more aggressive or jerky that might not be so civilized. The potential for tempers to flare amongst that more aggressive crowd is definitely where the possible chaos comes into play. It'll be interesting to see how 3F/FFF sets it up to minimize that potential.

I don't think FFF would be charging $180 without including the guaranteed variant* (* or 2 vintage DLs - new in 2017!).

Well, yeah, that's the assumption. If they went back to the a la carte method where it's like $40 to get it and $20 for the regular DL, I'd still go and get 2. With the current setup, a drinkable variant is important to me. I haven't sampled many, but Dwarven Power Bottom didn't qualify.

I think group B is gonna be the winners if you show up before the gates open. I think so many group B people won't be in the gates until after 11, that of you arrive before hard open, you'll be fine.

Honestly, I think group A people that show up before 8 will be fine also.

So many people don't show to Munster until 9/10am and don't know that it takes 2 hours to get in to the fest, or will even know of this whole 2 variant fiasco.

But how does one know which variant is 'drinkable' prior to the event without having tried all the variants for the year? No one has had the scotch variant. Is it drinkable?

I've posted posted something like this before, but yes, I think most of Group B will be happy based on original expectations. I definitely won't complain if I get FVM, Bourbon or Ronaldo, and I'll give myself one if I get a Handjee.

I would think the smoky moss would cut down on the sweetness nicely, but what do I know, I'm C group, so I'm apparently getting beat up while A&B take all my variants.

Educated guess. I'm not really a fan of scotch, and I find the cinnamon to be too strong in most beers I've had with it. I'd rather not risk it on those if I don't have to. Maybe they're fantastic, or maybe I went through a lot of effort to get a $50 drainpour.

On the other hand, I'm a total vanilla *****, so I should be happy with Handjee and FVM (I can't imagine a different barrel takes it from awesome to awful) and Bourbon is pretty safe. I guess I am assuming with Ronaldo. I'm torn on Muerte because I like spicy stuff, but I don't like it in everything.

That's just me of course, I suppose there are people that hate vanilla.

I do think C/D/E is going to be a shit show though, with people just standing in line all day

Except that you knew before you hit the door that the number of ribeyes and lobster were limited, no matter how the restaurant sells them over the course of the day, and that you sat down at the table with that knowledge beforehand, right? And if there were none of the two preferred plates, then you would eat whatever was left on the menu.

My guess is that anyone that motivated to wait in line to get in, and then who waits even longer in another line to get a crack at a handjee or whatever, isn't doing it because he / she wants to drink it, it's because they have a buyer in mind. Profit. Beer greed. At the end of the day, Floyds can't control if lines form, but they'll get blamed for the shit show that we create, no doubt.

And I'm not saying I would pay $180 for a ticket without a variant - no one would.

Well, it will be a shit show for the people who choose to stand in line all day . I'd think the tail end of each group's window will be fairly quick. But it's anyone's guess at this point.

That's not true, see my post above. People wait in line for bottles all the time, with Black Friday/BCBS obviously being the biggest example around here. I won't disagree that some of those people are trading or selling, but to say that anyone that motivated to wait in line is doing it because they have a buyer in mind as opposed to just drinking it is wrong.

    How high are you?

Everyone here is already calling it Dark Line Day, and you want to add in giving you samples of variants inside the brewery? Now that would be an epic shit show - I can see it now, can I have a taste of Handjee? Hmmmmm, that's nice. But, how is the Militia? Give me a pinch of that, please....The first 10 guys in would kill a barrel by themselves, lol.
