Good morning BAs! Well, it looks like everybody survived last evening's violent thunderstorms and almost tornadoes here in NW PA. Some trees went down and some power outages occurred, but overall not terribly destructive.

Today's New Breakfast Beer isn't new but I haven't reviewed it before, so...



I'm not a Goose Island fan on general principles - had my first in London many years ago, prior to the sell out. Sofie, however, makes me think that maybe they aren't quite the antichrist.

The only good thing about all the rain lately is that the woods have come to life bringing new colors every day. A beautiful time of year to pause and reflect. Take a moment to do just that.....

Drinking this one to two A$$ kickers from my home town.You might have heard of them.Nick & Nate Diaz.

 

Another hotel beer today. First time that I’m having a Guinness from a bottle in a paper cup. Had it from a can once, that was slightly better.

Somehow a pub seems almost essential for enjoying this beer to the fullest (draft ofcourse). Too bad there’s no time for that now.

Southern Prohibition Belgian Style Tripel

Score 3.66
look: 3.25 | aroma: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Light lemon color with large Belgian type cap and lace.

Aroma is a subtle blend of mild sweet malt and light spices with a touch of banana and old leather.

Taste is restrained as if the brewer wanted to climb further out on the limb but didn't trust his hold. On entry malt is present along with spice and an herbal hoppiness, but not too much. Hops emerge moreso mid palate though it's a bittering hop taste rather than something softer. Hop bitterness even a bit stronger emerges in the aftertaste. There is also a dry note in the middle which I suspect is rye which is in the grain mix. What is completely absent is any hint of alcohol and considering this bugger is 9.0% we're looking at a well crafted brew.

Full medium, creamy texture with enough carbonation to balance.

Overall a solid swing but a miss. I was hoping for more Belgian yeast influence, more Belgian spice like clove, stronger ripe fruit like banana, just a bit more oomph in those directions. Brewer says, "Pilsner malt with a touch of Rye layered with American Bravo hops" and go on to say it's a complex brew. Hmm, not quite, this one is high school pole vaulting as opposed to the collegiate bar set by Chimay Tripel and others of that ilk, yet, it is a darned good effort.
