Can 08 Dark Lord Land a King Henry?

    Or other similar brews?
I don't have much experience trading vintage beers. Usually I go about $4$ on most stuff.
Age add value? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I would say it's a fair 1:1 (I wouldn't trade a KH for one, but I think there would be some people who would)

Anywhere from 0.5 to 2.0, depending on the trader.

For those whose perception has been damaged by the current crop of Dark Lord, '08 is widely thought of as the best year in these parts. I know it's my favorite. It's a marvelous beer; nothing like the any of the vintages since, IMHO.

I wouldn't trade one straight-up for a King Henry anyway, anyhow. On the flip side, I'd happily trade a King Henry for an '08 Dark Lord (well, assuming, of course I had another King Henry, which I don't).

2011 edged out 2008 in a DL tasting I was part of this summer. And this was almost unanimous amongst 12 very experienced DL drinkers. On a side note - my favorite of the night was the voltron. It had bits and pieces of 2004-2012 and the 8 recent varients.

I have several KH's, and no 2008 DL's - I think that that is a fairly good and even trade, IMO.

2007 is drinking perfectly right now . TallPaul75 and I opened one a few weeks ago and it was stellar.

I disagree. 2007 is past its prime.
2008 is peaking now. It is quite fantastic currently in fact.
All eyes now belong solely on the 2009s.

If you trade a DL'08 1:1 for a KH, please send me the name of the person on the other side of the trade so that I can put him on my personal trading blacklist.

Anyone who eats Asian Food with Kikkoman somewhat regularly is an experienced DL drinker.

The last time I had them together, I do remember thinking that 2011 could turn into 2008. That was about 6 months ago.

BeerBob26 - I agree with MordorMongo above that an '08 should easily pull a KH, and that if I had an '08 for trade I would expect more than one KH in return.

this type of overzealous protection of trade value is part of why trading sucks these days :slight_frown:

I personally don't like to see what could be one person trying to take advantage of another person. The OP wanted opinions, and I think that a DL'08 is more valuable than a KH. I'm not suggesting that the OP hold his beer hostage, but I think that unless the other trader added or tossed in a few great extras, he/she's making an attempt to take advantage of the OP, who clearly showed a lack of knowledge.

If the OP were very knowledgeable about the trade and offered a 1:1, that's his call. If he's intentionally choosing to hook someone up, that's his call. But without the knowledge behind the bottles, it permits one party to take advantage of the other.

arguing about the value of something is one thing. it's just the whole sensationalism of "blacklisting" someone because they disagreed with you in trade value is part of why the trade forums are pretty ridiculous these days.

i think someone was once offended that i offered him a 07 barrel aged speedway stout for his 2012 bourbon barrel-aged dark lord. he literally called my offer offensive. trade value polarization of this community is why i'm not as active here anymore :slight_frown:

it's like people are trading stocks and out to screw everyone else. you could argue that you're trying to protect a guy whose getting screwed, but honestly, it could look the reverse from the other guy's POV. no reason to get incensed about it.

*edit*. sorry, i'm being judgmental. i just don't like seeing the trade community go in that direction :slight_frown:

I blacklist when I think someone clearly tries to take advantage of people in trades, not because they disagree with me. I can see where my statement left the door open for confusion.

    No - nothing was blind.

A few other tidbits - 2004 was actually really good. 2005 was almost a drain pour. But, those had to be traded for, so who knows the conditions they were kept in.
