Depends on when they stop adding ingredients to the recipe.

Bring on the Abyss. Plenty of Black Butte still on shelves too if anyone is looking.

Am I the only one who got a distinct cat litter aroma from this years Black Butte? It was....strange.

Deschutes has stated that the recipe has not changed from year-to-year, only the states that they distribute to and the labeling regulations they must satisfy.

I wasn't implying that, though it's good information. I was just being snarky about the change last year.

Pretty sure the recipe changes from year to year

This came up last year when cherry bark and vanilla beans showed up on the label. You can find a reference to those ingredients back in 2008 at the following link. The label change as they move into new markets theory sits well with me personally. http://www.ibabuzz.com/bottomsup/2008/12/13/beer-of-the-week-deschutes-abyss/

When, exactly, did they say this? According to a previous brewmaster, the recipe changed a couple times over the years. I don't know full details, but he indicated it was amount of chocolate and barrels used (at least.)

Here' a comment from the link I provided above. It would seem you're both right at least as far as the first few batches. No idea if anything changed in '09 other than the brett addition.

"Jason Randles, Deschutes Marketing Manager replies about Abyss…

Larry Sidor, our brewmaster, responded back with “The blend was exactly the same percentage as previous years. However, we used Makers Mark barrels and some others that seemed to have a much gentler oak and bourbon signature.”

The feds made us get more specific with our barrel aged statement after the first release as well.

So, to summarize, same blend all three years. Only change from 06 to 07 was the label. Only change in 08 is the barrels used to age part of the beer."
