Have not had that brew since 2005. Might just have to get a bottle. Is this one that they quit making?

    Cheers!

According to their website it's a year round. They stopped making Old Ruffian though (and others).

I will be passing through Eugene in a month. I may have to stop and check Alesong out. If I remember, they are relatively new brewery (almost checked them out two years ago).

...man, so many of these sound really good. I was planning a trip to the beer store for the first time in a while tomorrow anyway -- I think now I pretty much have to pick up a barleywine if I spot any while I'm there.

For some reason it seems like it's a fairly rare style in the store I usually go to. For example, I never even saw 2016's Bigfoot show up there... it's too bad there's so few barleywines on the shelves, because the store has a somewhat "cellar-y" sort of atmosphere to it -- there's very little fridge space but it's always on the cooler end of room temperature in there, not excessive amounts of lighting, and so on -- that seems like it'd be a great place for ageable beers to hang out for a while. Probably same goes for big stouts, Belgian-style ales, and so on -- and I do see a good number of those show up... almost sounds like I'm making a shopping list in this thread now, heh.

Same here :slight_frown: there's only ever a couple barleywines on the shelves at a given time. It's one of my favorite styles yet so hard to come by in my area.

Bottle dated 8/5/2015 (about 20 months old). 13.4% ABV, brewed with Pilsner malts, honey, and Simcoe and Amarillo hops. Aroma has honey, floral hops, orange, toffee, bread, and the slightest hint of dark fruit. Hmmm the taste is interesting. HUGE orange flavor, and YUUUGE bitterness. Even after 2 years, that's one intensely bitter beer. Orange peel, honey, herbs, citrus, raisin, molasses, sweet caramel also in the taste. Also big alcohol burn. Some good things going on: the big orange/honey/molasses flavor comes on strong at first but is soon overwhelmed by the tidal wave of bitterness. An interesting, but much too bitter beer.

This is the one brewed at De Molen. Not sure if that label has changed, but definitely different than the HOTD label.

I had a Bell's Third Coast Old Ale last night, and I thought I'd contribute to the thread, since I had been in the mood for a barleywine again. It's an absolute bomb of dark fruits, literally tasting like dates, figs, prunes, and raisins. It reminds me a lot of fruitcake with all those rich candied dark fruits and bit of toasted pumpernickel-like breadiness, plus molasses, licorice, brown sugar, and toffee. It's massively sweet upfront, but gets more bitter near the finish with notes of earth and tobacco. There's a warm spike of booze and it comes across as brandy-like. Then it leaves you with a sticky gloss that coats the mouth.

A barleywine for everyday (title of thread). No.

With that said I like/love many a barleywines (mostly English but a few American versions), but for this heavy/sweet/malty style of beer, there is probably none that I would drink probably more than 12oz in 7 days period. Just me I guess.

@zid from your photo, that boxed one ion your the top shelf and center is my favorite hands down.
