How much do you tip when you go to the brewery to pick up cans of a new weekly release? I picked up over 2 cases last week from Aslin, spent about $250, and just instinctively clicked on the "15% tip" button. Should I be tipping to pick up cans? The beer is great and I like to help out, but the lowest tipping option ended up being $37.

I would not tip to walk up to a counter, buy packaged beer and then leave the establishment.

The fact that they asked you to tip 15 percent on a retail purchase is surprising to me.

I don't tip on pickups only.

I'll usually give $3 for growler fills, and $1/pint if I'm drinking.

    This.

Whenever I've bought cans at Singlecut, they always press 0 tip before handing over the device for my signature.

Been to several establishments that, because they are on the same service as the brewpub still ask if you want to tip (or have a line on the physical piece of paper). I do not tip for pickup if any kind (whether food or take-out alcohol).

    $1-1.50/drink otherwise.

No tip for pick-up or to-go orders. Otherwise, roughly a $1 per drink

I don't tip if I'm picking up beer to go, but if I order a beer to drink there I do, like a bar.

No tipping for take-out packaged beer [or food]. They probably just use the same checkout system as the full-service brewpub. There's no shame in pressing the no tip button for take-out. If I fill a growler at a bar I might leave $1-2 for the server's time. Sitting down for full-service is completely different.

I agree with everyone here. I never tip for something that didn't take any service to provide. Take-out food, take-out beer. I don't even love tipping for fast food or minimal service (especially since they don't get paid tip wages but regular wages).

The new owners of an established place installed that feature at their carry out counter and tried to cajole me into adding a tip to an already overpriced meal. Can't imagine what for as the cost of preparing the food was presumably included in the price. I smiled, said I'd left my reading glasses so would she please press the "No" button for me.

I almost respect the sheer brazenness of it. What did JR Ewing say, "Integrity is the main thing and once you learn how to fake that the rest is easy".

Same. Even though tipping is not mandatory in Europe, if I appreciate the service I'll give a 10% tip on a beer.

I mean, it's not mandatory here either, just not very nice if you don't.

I usually start out by asking for a 20% excellent customer discount, then tip accordingly. Nah, for take-out I don't think it's necessary unless you are feeling particularly magnanimous or just won the lottery. As an ex-bartender and publican, tipping for regular service is actually fun.

Just so you know, no one asked for the tip. There just happen to be prominent buttons on the checkout screen.

My instinct is not to tip for takeout beer that doesn't involve growler filling. However, some places have a 5% tip option on the iPad software thingy and since I'm usually only spending in the neighborhood of $50 and am generally in a good mood when buying beer, I often check that thinking "eh, what's a couple bucks?".

I'd never tip 10 or 15% and if the 5% option wasn't there I wouldn't tip anything, so from that perspective it's kind of a smart idea.

Presenting a screen that asks if you would like to tip is not asking for a tip?

I like the posters that said that other breweries press "no tip" on retail sales.

When people ask me what our taproom employees make (I do not work the taproom fwiw), I tell them that I hope that customers tip them a dollar for every beer they pour, whether the beer is $5/Pint or $15/growler (or any other size/price) I like to see them get a dollar tip. Normally that puts their overall tip percentage between 15% and 20% if every customer tips that way. For bottles or cans, no tip necessary.

I generally follow that rule myself unless a bartender is particularly enjoyable or informative in which case I'll go to $2 per pour.

I tip %10 on growlers, just like I do on to go orders. Google that shit.

It depends, but I usually leave a tip. If you are picking up food, someone had to take the time to take your order, put it into the kitchen, package the food, and take payment from you. It is often one of the bartenders that could be serving beer or food to someone else. I'm not going to leave 20% but at least a few bucks. For beer, if the person packaged the beer for me, even if it is just putting it into a plastic bag, I'll give them a few bucks. If it's a larger order that requires boxing up the beer and otherwise packaging it in a way to ensure that bottles don't break, i'll tip more.

I'm straight Mr.Pink if someone just opens a fridge/goes to the counter behind him or her and plops it down for me to buy. If I tipped this person, I'd then be tipping the person scanning my items at the grocery store.
