In my experience, if you state things that are inaccurate with no evidence to back up your claims then the majority of people are going to assume that you simply don't know what you're talking about. Seems reasonable to me.

So basically Grape Lotion is the Voodoo donuts of the beer world.
I can live with that..long as no one dies in a hazy IPA drinking contest

When does Rogue start putting out purple bottles of Grape Lotion beer, with silly flavors?

Did someone actually die in a donut eating contest?

I had not heard about that so had to look it up. Wow ... what a way to go. Although now that I think about it I'm a little surprised this doesn't happen more often during eating contests. Kind of seems like an assumed risk.

Not to mention that article is from like, what, a year ago? It's pretty clear that NEIPAs are just as popular around here as they are everywhere else, based on the number of PNW breweries doing the style now. I have seen very few pitchfork- and board-with-a-nail-in-it-wielding mobs outside of breweries making hazy IPAs.

I said "with all due respect."

Look, all I'm saying is you are too far removed from this area to be able to speak authoritatively about the perception of GN around Portland and the greater PNW. You have little to no frame of reference, save for that article from last year. You are out of your element.

Probably choked on a gumball or some other goofy shit they put on their donuts.
OK, I'm off topic, back to arguing about Grape Lotion.

The brewers of GN said they felt that way, I'm basing what I'm saying on what they have previously said and the amount of disdain they catch on this forum. As I said, I don't see anyone bashing any other PNW brewery anywhere near as much as GN. I also have many friends who have lived in Portland for quite a long time and I visit at least three times a year so I'm not as far removed as you'd like to think.

This is also about people in Portland not believing GN is a world class brewery and me believing they are a world class brewery. I would say a majority of the country agrees with me based on how much their beer gets traded and the feedback I have had from the people I sent GN beers.

With that said, I'll be sure to let you know the next time I visit so I can buy you all the GN beers you can drink.

I was just about to recommend this. It is long overdue....

There's something about communicating on message boards that tends to make enemies of potential friends, and misunderstandings where there ought to be none. Meeting for a beer, in real life, person-to-person, would likely solve whatever seems to be the issue here...

    Cheers, fellas.

Exactly, I thought I'd give him the opportunity to school me on the Portland beer scene in person while drinking world class beers. Anyone else is more than welcome to join us.

There is zero basis for this comment. I'm fairly certain that you likely have no idea how much their beer gets traded, and unless the feedback you're getting is from thousands/millions of people, the relevance of that feedback is suspect.

I've sent/traded GN crowlers to a number of folks, for all kinds of different reasons; curiosity, word of mouth recommendations from friends, a beer they got to try at GABF or some other event, etc. Like you apparently, I've also asked some of these folks what they thought about the beer I sent. So far, I've gotten good feedback regarding the Double Stack (some folks thought it was a bit sweet, but then noted that they really like sweeter beers), and neutral feed back regarding the IPA's (most responses have been that they've been OK). So what would you take from that ElijahSF? Does it mean most of the country thinks the DS is fantastic but the IPA's are no better than just OK? I'll be happy to answer that for you. In fact, it means none of those things. All it means is that the select few folks who had already expressed an interest in GN, and wanted to try their beer, thought the DS was generally pretty good and the IPA's OK. Nothing more than that.

Exactly. You can't take your own extremely limited experiences (both in terms of your knowledge of the local beer culture and your knowledge of the rest of the country's view on GN) and expand that to the masses. Any logical person would agree that this is a flawed mindset. And yes, your experiences are extremely limited when we are talking about this sort of broad generality ... no matter how much you want to say otherwise or how much you think you know.

So many analogies could be made ... but I'm tired of this conversation and ready for a beer.

Their beers sold out in roughly two hours in what is arguably the hazy beer capital of the country. That alone says a lot about the quality of their beers.

Dude said go look at Untappd and Instagram which I too have already done and you'll see how much their beers are being traded. People tend to trade great beers not bad beers.

    "extremely limited experiences":

That's exactly my point, my experiences with their beers are certainly not limited. I've sent them all over the country as I already listed the states. Not to mention the people who I know that have had their beers that they received from people other than me and have said they're just as good as anyone else brewing in the country. I could easily say you don't have any more experience drinking their beers and comparing them to the rest of the country than I do, but I'm not going that route. Ya'll can go on about your business of believing they're not world class and I'll go on about my business of believing they are world class.

You got skills @derftron! But let's keep it to haiku's in the PNW forums. You are opening up a can of worms here

I'm pretty sure we're all good with that. No one is saying you aren't entitled to your opinion. I completely respect your opinion and can absolutely see why you might say that. They are a very good brewery, and some of the beers I've had from them, I can see why you (and others) might think they're world class. I don't happen to feel quite as strongly about the quality of their beer as you, but what difference does that make (IMHO, none)? My guess is that some of the breweries I feel are world class, you very likely might not agree with either.

As I mentioned above, Vive la difference.

Not to deviate from the great debate I don't really understand...but I'm arriving in town tomorrow and I do enjoy the NEIPA style (and west coast IPAs, and mosaic heavy IPAs , and lots of other IPAS. ..)

I'd been under the impression GN was the go to place for the hazy style. 2 quick q's

    1) what does GN have that you highly recommend?
    2) is there another reasonably available NE style in PDX you think is better?

You don't live here. You don't drink here. If it is not true that you have "no fucking idea," it is demonstrably true that your understanding of the beer scene up here is secondhand at best.
