As my user name indicates, I am interested in how to make a "cardinal and gold." Essentially, I want to find a reddish beer that will float like a Guinness. I've tried lots of things, but have struck out so far.

One hope was to try a Kilkenny Irish Red, but it does not seem that they are distributed in bottles or cans in the US.

    Any ideas? TIA.

Thanks. There are lots of good recipes here, but none that I can find with the red on top (or with gold on top of red). As close as I can find is putting a gold beer on top of a red something else.

I thought it was a simple quest when I started. Isn't there a red beer that floats like a Guinness? Still hoping to find one. Or maybe make one.

I'd try Ballast Point's Red Velvet. It's nitro carbonated like Guinness but red due to beet coloring. Guinness floats because it is less dense, but I don't know if the nitrogen has anything to do with it.

The trick will be to use a hefty golden beer as the base. A pale bock like Einbecker Mai Urbock should do the trick. The beer that floats must be drier than that. Maybe give the Guinness IPA a shot - it's reddish and has nitro as well.

Another vote for Ballast Point Red Velvet. It's the closest thing I can think of.

Thanks. I will try the Ballast Point Red Velvet. I've tried to put a Red with Nitrogen on top once before and it didn't seem to work, but I will try again.

it is about Iowa State, not USC, though we are often accused of copying the USC uniforms. Surely someone at USC has found a way to make a cardinal and gold!

What do you think about Ballast Point Red Velvet? Might it float?

    It's nitro like Guinness...

You mean the beer I suggested months ago and you said you were going to try? It's not very likely that anyone who has tried this will respond - it's up to you to see if it'll work. It's like they made this beer just for your situation because it's hard to explain its existence otherwise. Be sure to watch videos on how to pour a "black and tan" with a spoon before you attempt it. If it works, you must post a pic of it here.

I agree - OP, try the red Velvet experiment but don't feel compelled to actually drink it. It is both the most wonderful smelling beer I've had and one of the worst tasting beers I've had.
