As part of our ongoing "use the damn data" campaign, ratings (less than 150 characters) are now being displayed by default (again). By not displaying them, and catering to a very small segment of users who didn't want to see them, we were ignoring the rest of our users and creating confusion when viewing certain beer and place pages.

But the ability to hide ratings still exists. The checkbox has been changed to "Hide Ratings" and it's located in the same place; under the "User Ratings & Reviews" header, where the other sorting options are. Checking the box sets a browser cookie that'll hide ratings and only display reviews (rating with 150 or more characters) for 30 days on the current device.

    Note:
    • If a beer or place doesn't have more than one page of ratings and at least one review, and regardless if you've checked Hide Ratings, all ratings will be temporarily displayed by default and the checkbox will be hidden. Previously nothing might have been displayed, even though there were hidden ratings.
    • As before, if you click on a user rating to view it (like from their list of ratings) and you've checked Hide Ratings, all ratings will be temporarily displayed as we don't assume that there's a review attached and we need to be able to display the user's rating.
    • The checkbox is only available for logged in users.
Hopefully this clears up some head-scratching by providing a more complete picture when reading beer and place ratings.

    Rate on.

Thanks for the explanation. I am one of the fans of "hide ratings". I like to read the reviews, but find the numerical ratings largely useless as data (the average in the header is sufficient), except for the rare beers that have a high variance, in which case I do turn them on. Your compromise of allowing a toggle if there is more than one page seems like something I can live with. The last few beers I looked were < 1 pagers, so I thought that feature was gone for good. I often turn the reviews back on if there are very few reports on beers anyway, just to see something, so this will probably be easy to get used to.

Normally having ratings off, I've been interested to see a fair amount of < 150 character ratings with some pithy comments worth reading. Or one word, like "infected" that tells the story. So to complicate further, how about including these short reviews with the "real" reviews even when ratings are off?
