I had Muerte on tap and thought it was amazing. Not too much heat at all. FWIW, I've had aged Muerte as well and thought it was fantastic. Held it's own against BVDL at our tasting once it had two-three years on it.

I really enjoyed Zombie Unicorn on tap as well as the FFF/Pizza Port Session IPA. Guest taps were good....nothing mind blowing that I saw but I came away happy with finding beers that I don't normally get to try.

Maybe I just had good luck but this was the best year of guest taps I have run into. Bruery rue d floyd, side project derivation (6?), a couple different Jackie O's BA beers plus Half Acre Benthic.

That's a damn good run at the guest taps.

Funny you say that. I hadn't thought about him, but my first thought at the fest regarding this year's DL was it tastes a lot more like Surly Darkness that DL...

I think it's part of some people's plot to get this thread up to 200 pages. Now that we've taken down bath salts, who knows where we'll go next.

Interesting. I'm very tempted to open a bottle of this year's DL...soon.
It can only go up from here.

From what I'm hearing the Dark Lord and all it's variants (except Dia...who even has one?!) were solid to very good this year. That's quite a step up. It seems a lot of people are attributing some of this to Mr. Haug's arrival. Not sure if we'll know how much input he had into brewing Dark Lord this year.

I know the DLD webpage had the info on all the variants with the barrels & adjuncts, but is it ever disclosed anywhere how long the beers are in barrel for?

At the very least, he might have just said "stop fucking up a thousand bottles of DL and a couple expensive barrels with cardamom every year!"

Or which distillery's barrels are used?

    I don't think so...

Funny how some breweries get shit all over for this lack of disclosure, while others don't. Oh well, as long as it tastes good!

I liked the painted designs too, got BBDL this year so it would have been my first painted variant

Yea my FVM looked a bit rough last year after all of that rain and I put mine in my truck about an hour after getting it

I am NOT a pepper guy & I was impressed w/2017 Muerte....great mouthfeel & chocolate with some spice on the backend but not too overpowering

I think you got pretty lucky to hit all of those. I ran past the times a couple of times & didn't really see anything that excited me. Only ended up getting 2017 regular Dark Lord but a buddy got Ronaldo & de Muerte & shared

I'm curious to know how the unicorn beer of the variants tastes? Being a scotch fan myself, I was intrigued about a smoky/ peaty Ardbeg DL. Have been looking in multiple places to track one down and only came across two thus far.

No, it's tightly held, confidential information. Your only chance to find that out is a meeting with the president...
