Oh, yeah, it definitely sounds like the kind of people who fixate on image.

Or a juice box. But really, it's not surprising some people feel this way. Some want a culty exclusive beer aura unto themselves. It's OK to feel high-minded and be shallow at the same time. I suppose we've all been there at one time or another. Plus, Sierra Nevada is fairly local for me now. Tastes pretty much like the Chico stuff!

The problem with locally grown ingredients is that few places have the right conditions for growing either high quality barley or hops, let alone both.
I can grow barley where I live but it would be very inferior to East Anglian which has perfect soil and climate, and though hops have been grown commercially near me they were totally outclassed by those from Kent.
That certain regions are famed for growing particular crops is for a good reason.

OP, I think what he meant to say was "SN isnt hyped/rare enough". I do know the type. Were you drinking a core lineup Night Shift beer?

Had you offered him that, that may not have been good enough for him either. Or one that is 3 weeks old.

Had you offered him another local albeit maybe more mediocre of a product, would he have said yes?

It's an interesting thought dynamic to say no to a free beer. I want to get inside his head

The CLOSEST brewery to my house is Anheuser Busch, ~10 miles.

    Guess I'm screwed. :slight_frown:

This thread explains why it's nice to live about 10 miles away from the AB-IBEV plant in Newark NJ. I can drink all the Bud I want and tell the beer jerks it ok to do so because it's local:astonished:.

You don't know that. This dude could've been shredded on a steel tube frame welded together by the "shop" down the street (for those not aware, hand-welded bikes are sort of the "hipster" movement of the bike world right now) while wearing a pair of denim cutoffs from Thrifty-Thrift.

Not to say I agree with the kid. There are other ways to turn down a beer. Just sounds like he shouldn't get any more free hand-outs, or at least that's strike one.

Personally, I think Sierra Nevada makes some damn delicious stuff. I'd be pressed to think of a more refreshing beer than SN Pale Ale after a summer run or ride.

I am guessing that this younger fellow only drinks beer from a nanobrewery since they do not make "crappy craft beer"!?![IMG]

    Cheers!

I'm a younger guy (early 30s) but this sort of crap hits close to home for me. Since I could legally drink, i was always that weirdo bringing a crazy mix of beers to get togethers. I, and maybe just my father loved the variety...

ive seen the dynamic change and it scares me. "Craft" alone is not appealing enough. Local core offerings are passed on

I really cant tell if thats a good thing or a bad thing. The newer drinkers have passed on so much, it feels they are missing out, yet act like douche nozzles.

I'm sure my father felt the same way when I got into beer. I dont think I was ever a snob about it though. I have family who I visit who offer me up Heineken or Coors light/bud light often and its a decent time to revisit those beers, and more importantly spend time with family

Sierra Nevada is craft "enough." Even if they were outside of the craft brewery definition, I'd still drink Sierra Nevada as I really enjoy many of their offerings. I believe they are a legend in the craft beer community.

Yep. To each their own, but if somebody offers me a free beer -- unless I'm not drinking at all -- I say thank you and drink the thing.

Someone mentioned Anchor. Ironically Maytag got started with help, IIUC, from the SF local food community.

So local has been part of the craft movement for a long time. It was not "only about the liquid" Having a preference for local, even an extreme one, seems legitimate to me.

OTOH if someone offers to give me something, the gracious thing would be to accept it. Yeah I would drink a Bud Lite if a friend offered it. Only thing I would turn down is something that violated a religious prohibition, or anything with alcohol if health or safety required me to.

I would have slapped whatever beer he was drinking out of his hand and asked him again if he wants to try it now. Complete douche for sure.

I even recently drank a Sixpoint Sweet Action offered to me recently - and I don't like their beers and I do not support contract breweries. Now afterward I wondered why it was called a cream ale when it resembled nothing like a cream ale - but I certainly didn't turn my nose up when my host offered it to me.
But more on topic - Sierra Nevada is as "craft" as they come since they pretty much invented the category. I'd laugh at someone saying otherwise.

Was it locally sourced, organic Kool-Aid? Does he know the artisan who prepared it by name? And what day it was prepared on?

Can't say I've got a lot of Cream Ale ticks, but I liked Sweet Action and I know the bros gave it a world class rating. Did you drink the new "Blonde Ale" formulation or was there something specific that was off for the style?

It's like turning down a glass of water for not being wet enough.

    Sierra Nevada defines the category.
