Have the day off today, the weather looks promising... I think I'm going to take the youngsters to the zoo, but first I am going to start this morning with some very smooth Doom from Founders.

Good morning, all! It's a little chilly here in the Cedar Valley, with the sun making a token appearance now and then and rain in the forecast. In other words, perfect weather for a Baltic porter. This is Sue, an imperial smoked porter from Yazoo Brewing in Nashville. I've had this in the cellar for a year. Very smooth, not too smoky. Big dark roasted malt character, with aromas and flavors of espresso and dark chocolate and a little tart fruit acidity. Dry finish, with some tannic astringence and a touch of pleasant burnt-coffee bitterness. In a word, outstanding.


I picked up this little snifter at the thrift store yesterday. I suspect that it is vintage carnival glass. The iridescence really made it stand out from the rest of the nondescript junk on the shelf. I've never seen another one like it. What if it isn't vintage carnival glass? Well, then, I guess I'm out fifty cents.

Good morning boils and ghouls. Let's have a drink shall we? Perrin Brewing Co. 98 problems IPA. It's taste profile really reminds me of Bell's two hearted. Cheers!

Beer time after awaking at dawn to find the patio planters dug up for the second day in a row. The mutts aren't doing a good job watching the yard at night! Did some light treadmill work, then walked the dogs as the rain started to fall again. A good excuse to get back in the garage to continue the purge of unnecessary 'stuff'.

I'm a big fan of this Three Floyd's beer but the 4-16-17 batch doesn't measure up. The coffee is there but it's rather flat and missing that creamy feel I got from past batches. Drinkable but not nearly as enjoyable. I'll lick my wounds of disappointment and take one for the wallet!

 

Drinking yet another Swedish macro. This one deceptively called Dansk Fadöl, or "Danish draft beer", even though it is brewed and canned in Sweden . It's brewed according to an old Danish recipe it says on the side of the can but it tastes like a Swedish Export lager (rather than a Danish 4.6% pilsner) and quite similar to some of the other beers from this brewery, it has a bit of malty sweetness and a mild balancing hop bitterness (IBUs are probably around 23 similar to most Swedish Export lagers). I think it's an enjoyable beer but I do enjoy the style.

 

Another Paulaner. This is a Weißbier Kristallklar.

Wanted to compare this one with the Naturtrüb I had before for some time. I like the Naturtrüb version slightly better. However, I think this Kristallklar is great when you like to have a Weißbier with your dinner.

These beers go very well with many types of food. They also can make you feel stuffed before the second course, especially the Naturtrüb beers.

Bottle from 2014. Finally get to check off sahti. Rye is there. Juniper subtle. Chai is there. Pretty wild floaties. They look grey. It somewhat held up. But still a bit of oxidization. Cheers.
