I'm entirely expecting this thread to get a few responses, and then fade into the distance, as this is a pretty odd inquiry that seems like it will be cut-and-dry between everyone (especially since a number of you don't drink from cans or bottles).

I've noticed over the years, when I'm drinking beer from the bottle/can, I typically drink it slower. If I pour it into a glass, there's a good chance it'll go down much quicker. Is it the fact that I can more easily see my amount in the glass? Or because the carbonation softens and expands a bit once it's poured, therefore more aromatic and easier to enjoy?

Anyone else relating to this stupid little personal observation? Or have anything to add to it?

Both -- but probably more so the carbonation issue. When you pour into a glass, it kills off a lot of the carbonation and the beer will go down a lot easier. In fact, if you're in a beer chugging contest you'll want to pour it hard to kill most of that carbonation...not that I would know from personal experience. *ahem*

But looks probably have to do a lot with it, too. When you see how much is in the glass, you're more quickly tempted to take another gulp--but, yeah, it probably mostly has to do with carbonation.

Another consideration is the size of the opening. Back in the 70's, several breweries came out with wide-mouth cans and bottles to encourage faster consumption, perhaps some even earlier than that. Glasses allow even faster chugging. In college my buddy and I often drank from 64oz pitchers, usually chugging our first ones of the night. Sure couldn't/wouldn't do that anymore.

For me it seems to typically be a matter of how hungry/thirsty I am. If I'm hungry or thirsty I definitely seem to drink faster.

Also, I've noticed that if I'm drinking more than one I usually put the first one down pretty quickly then take my time with the rest. If only drinking one, I tend to milk it.

I'm the total opposite. When I drink beer from the can it disappears much more quickly. In my case I think it's because:

    a) not seeing the liquid means I probably don't do a good job of pacing myself

    b) when I'm around 70% of the way through, without having the added weight of the glass in my hand, it feels fairly light - so I usually think "fuck it I'm almost done" and finish it off (midway of which I realize there was actually quite a bit left)

So yeah you're not the only person that's overthought this haha

I drink about 2-3 times faster out of a can or bottle than I do from a glass.

I drink fastest from a can, because I cant shotgun a beer in a glass.

I've had beers which I seem to drink faster because they are outstanding and not extreme in taste - overly bitter or boozy. Some call that drinkability or session.

Interesting. A beer is much, much more likely to be consumed quicker in a bottle/can compared with pouring it into a glass for me.

I think a large part of that reason is if I'm in a setting where I'm not pouring my beer into a glass, chances are I don't really care a lot about the taste. Even when I'm enjoying a beer while playing video games I'll still pour it into a glass, if only to see the brew striped of its brown or tin clothes.

In fact, the only times I consume out of a bottle/can are: tailgating, camping, float trips, parties, and free beer. Unless I get handed a free Parabola (hasn't happened yet, unfortunately), I don't go to the lengths to pour it into a glass. Plus a free beer is usually a product of one of the four options listed before it.

Other than big stouts/quads or straight bourbon, I pretty much drink everything at the same rate...big problem when I was a vodka and 7 guy

Just cracked this open tonight; would be great for chugging if it had been a good beer and if I didn't use glassware. Didn't know it was this type of can when I bought it, never had one before.

I think the type of glass matters too. A shaker pint invites you to drink faster while a snifter style inspires me drink more slowly, swirl my glass more.

Bottle compared to a glass I am not
Sure but I definitely drink from a can faster especially lighter beers.

    I think you're over-thinking this...and maybe it's time to switch to water ???

It's more than likely because your mouth is wider...

And thus still, with a glass rather than bottle/can.

Like the old commercial stated: "Wider is Better!"

Buuuuuuut.....what about the plastic hose, funnel, and valve contraption with the hose clamps...now what was that called?

San Diego brewery Mike Hess has these types of cans and they are great for camping, beach, pool etc. it's like drinking out of a glass but in a can....what?! Mind blown.

Heady topper should come in these type of cans.

I pretty much switched to beer for this reason. I drank mixed drinks the same speed as beer and like to always be drinking something at a gathering. Thus, I always make sure to have a nice sessionable beer or it's trouble.

I think the bigger question is what's more noteworthy:

The fact that you drink beer faster out of a glass vs. bottle/can?

    ... or ...

The fact that you *noticed* you drink beer faster out of a glass vs. bottle/can?

The 22 oz. bomber of 8% or higher ABV beer taught me to drink out of a glass VERY slowly. I had to force myself to watch the clock as I drank to keep myself on a pace that works for me (i.e., keeps me from going straight from drunk to hangover in light speed -- those barrel-aged stouts and DIPAs are *not* your granddaddy's beer :astonished::confused:).

Usually has to do with the shape of the drinking vessel. If it is harder for you to tell how much you are drinking(1 oz vs 2 oz) then you will drink it faster. I think cups manage to fool us because the are wide at the top and shrink as they go down. One ounce from the top is drastically different from the ounce at the bottom. Bottles/cans however tend to be straight shaped so you can tell one ounce(gulp) to the next without guessing much. See the following for additional reading. http://www.nhs.uk/news/2012/09September/Pages/Glass-size-drinking-speed.aspx

Just seems to depend what it is for me. But with this goes what I like to drink the beverage from.

E.g. Nice stouts I always pour into a glass. I think they taste better. Many Belgian/Bavarian beers I prefer the taste in the bottle. Thus, if enjoyed in the reverse receptacle I tend to enjoy it slower.

That said, if I control for all variables such as being satiated, I consume beer in the optimal receptacle at the same speed regardless of which beer/receptical.

I only have one speed - LUDICROUS SPEED! Doesn't really matter what I'm drinking or out of what, it just kinda... disappears...
