I have a friend visiting for the day on Friday and we have a short window to try a new brewery. We've both been to the old stalwarts.

She's not much for IPAs so I wouldn't take her to Trillium/Idle Hands/Aeronaut and probably not Mystic because last time I was there EVERYTHING was sour and we both find them hit-or-miss.

So out of the newest stuff (Lamplighter, Winter Hill, Turtle Swamp, Endurance?) how do you all rank them? Which carry more variety? Are any really can't miss?

We might just end up at Night Shift. She hasn't been.

Errr... one of these things is not like the other. I think the owner probably just threw up in his mouth a bit at seeing Idle Hands lumped in as an "IPA brewery"

If you do Night Shift then you can also do Bone Up. I think Idle Hands has a nice tap room and variety of beers and you can walk along the bike trail there from Night Shift. Dorchester Brewery is also new.

Yeah... that pretty much sums it up. One IPA on tap out of 12 makes us an IPA brewery. Serenity now!

Right now we have 3 German style lagers, 3 Belgian style ales, 1 mixed fermentation farmhouse/sour, 1 stout, 1 fruited sour, 1 oak-aged imperial irish red, 1 dunkelweiss and 1 IPA.

I know this probably isn't exactly what you're looking for because you're literally saying you're not an IPA brewery, but I have to say that Four Seam is amazing. First Idle Hands beer I've had and I was more than impressed. I'll be making my way to the taproom very soon to check out what else you guys make.

Be fair, though, Four Seam is one hell of an IPA; y'all are a damned good IPA brewery (in addition to, you know, the majority of your beers).

Idle Hands is great. So is Night Shift - if she hasn't been to NS, that should be a definite.
Have you considered CBC? They've got a nice variety on tap, and their food is great.

Thanks for the Kudos. Just because we don't consider ourselves an IPA brewery doesn't mean we aren't going to make the best IPA we can. We're definitely proud of Four Seam.

We've both been to CBC. Last time I was there the food was really disappointing.

TBH I haven't been out there since you were co-located with NS and had like 4 beers on tap. Unfortunately I don't see much of your bottles out here in the wilds of the North Shore either. My apologies for the misrepresentation.

But can anyone actually answer my original question? Maybe the ones I listed are too new?

Turtle swamp just opened and has like 4 beers so it's pretty limited. Winter Hill seems to have a love-it or hate-it vibe. Pretty sure Endurance is closed unless there is some other brewery by the same name that I don't know about.

Night shift is going to have the biggest lineup on tap. Even though half of the list is hoppy there is still plenty of other things to try. Lamplighter has a bunch of beers on tap but lots of IPAs and some soured beers. Not as much else to try like Night Shift.

Cambridge beer co. is a another great option and will probably be less crowded than either Night Shift or Lamplighter.

If your friend is visiting you in the North Shore have you considered Notch?

If it's just two of you you could easily hit up Idle Hands and Nightshift on the cheap with Uber Pool. Just a few dollars one way. And these two are likely your best bets, Nightshift most certainly has A LOT of IPAs, but they also have about 26 beers on tap at the moment. A variety of styles and should be able to find something interesting.

You could also head to Lamplighter, then bounce over to Lord Hobo, and then CBC as well. They're all within a 5 - 10 minute walk of each other. And if you were disappointed with the food at CBC, you could always grab food at Smoke Shop which is directly connected to CBC. If you haven't been to Smoke Shop, go to Smoke Shop.

And again with Uber Pool, you could actually do a mix of both if you were really ambitious. I've done this a few times, it's relatively cheap and quick.

Just making clear that they are connected only by the building they are in.

Oh, yeah my bad, yes, two different places. It's really nice though to be able to walk through the bathroom to CBC to grab some quality beers (not that the beer list is terrible at Smoke Shop) while waiting for a table.

Actually the buzzer might go far enough out that you could grab a drink at that new out door bar...you know, if it ever gets nice again outside.

Definitely second this is you are already in the North Shore area. And if you don't mind a little driving then some combination of Notch >> Ipswich >> Cape Ann would make for a great afternoon tour for an out of towner. Pretzels and pickles at Notch and full pub menus at the others.

We've come a long way since the early days of Charlton Street. Come by our new tap room in Malden, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

They have some at the Olde Bedford Package Store that's reasonably fresh. Other than that, no idea.

They always seem to have it at Eastgate liquors in Wilmington for some reason (and I noticed it there again just yesterday). They tend to have a lot of old stock though so it's possible I've been seeing the same cans over and over.

They did also have a whole dedicated cooler for Lawson's super session as well. At least 4 or 5 cases worth (1 six pack per person). So if that floats your boat it might make it worth the trip even if CD is old.
