Shocking!! I hope liquor stores are prepared to dedicate shelf space long-term to this beer.

The Surly anniversary series provides a great opportunity for them to put out interesting beers that ALSO sound likely to be very good (based on style/description alone), and therefore sell a metric shit-ton of them.

Instead, they persist in these bizarre concoctions that collectively sound kinda-sorta-maybe interesting which linger for months on shelves or in the cellars of people who foolishly thought they should stock up when they saw them. It's not that they have been particularly bad, but they have mostly been unremarkable and overpriced.

    Such an obvious missed opportunity.

Agreed. I haven't tried Five or Eleven yet, but the only one I would buy again would be Eight. And that's even a bit scary considering the infected bottles I've heard about.

Have not bought any since 8 for alot of your reasons, price point included. I will/have tried them on tap and that's fine by me, no need to purchase bottle.

I have only picked up one of the Surly anniversary beers for a while now just to have the bottle art.

I'd probably say Red Cow North Loop is your best bet (probably a 6 block walk or so) as far as beer bars. The Depot is practically across the street, and will have a solid (if unspectacular) beer selection, if you don't want to venture that far. Butcher and the Boar is definitely walkable as well, but their beer garden is occasionally closed for private events, so its worth calling or checking out their twitter feed ahead of time.

Maybe scope out Haskells or Whole Foods for bottles? I'm not an expert on downtown bottle shops so someone else may be able to speak to this better than I could.

In addition to Whole Foods and Haskells, there's also North Loop Wine & Spirits. They have a bad rep on here because of notoriously higher prices than other bottle shops, but that also means limited releases sometimes stick around a bit longer - if you're willing to pay a bit more, it might be worth checking as an out of towner.

I would also recommend stopping at Modist and Fulton breweries in the North Loop. For an incredible burger and often surprisingly good taplist, go to Borough and sit at the bar. Can't go wrong with Red Cow either, as mentioned above.
