i was listening to a podcast a month or so ago, it might have been the Odd 13 altered egos and Malt liquor was brought up. I didn't think too much of it but then saw a few other breweries that had released a malt liquor.

So I was just racing through Facebook and saw Founders is releasing one. I was pretty shocked I guess for the fact I just never thought that style would make it to draft brewing. I use the kill some big mouth Mickey's back in the day.

So I was curious what others thought of this new trend of brewing malt liquor?

    Cheers,

    Davey

I see this style occasionally in breweries and I usually think the brewer is just mixing up the beer menu a bit, but sometimes I wonder if it started as a pilsner recipe that didn't go quite right so they stick the 'malt liquor' moniker on it and sell it to the unsuspecting. Malt liquor should not be a trend.

I have a soft spot for malt liquor (which, luckily, isn't my belly.....yet). I missed out on DFH Liquor de Malt, which I'd love to see again but am not holding my breath. It came with a paper bag, which just adds to its legacy in my opinion.

As for my favorite malt liquor, I'd have to say Haffenreffer Private Stock. Sadly, it is no longer produced. My favorite attainable malt liquor is probably Country Club or Colt 45 Double Malt. I also enjoyed the west coast formula of Olde English 800 (the west coast version is 7.5% abv compared to the weaker ~5% abv here in the East) but then they switched to plastic bottles, which is a transgression that I cannot forgive. I mean, seriously...you already feel low class enough drinking a 40oz. Drinking a plastic 40oz is a whole new low.

Well, why not, after all they're in the business of brewing stuff for sale.

I would love to taste a good malt liquor. I'm not holding my breath, however.

And to whoever suggested barrel-aged Mickeys Big Mouth: Fucking ew!

I am actually pretty excited for it. Lots of nostalgia with Malt Liquor and if there was a higher quality take on it, I think that it could be interesting. I missed out on the DFH release and it would be cool if they did it again.

Nice avatar btw, you don't get the Gas Face.

The Founders malt liquor release should be late summer, DKML (Dick Kicker Malt Liquor) a bourbon barrel aged malt liquor. DKML is the fourth release in their 2017 Barrel Aged series; Frootwood, KBS, Doom, DKML, Backwoods Bastard, and CBS.

Back in college we used to drink Schlitz twists; Schlitz Malt Liquor on ice, with a twist or more of lemon. I recall it being pretty refreshing, but then again we weren't too picky about what we drank back then.

I went to Elysian a few weeks ago with my brother before the Mariners game and they had a malt liquor on draft. I was originally going to get the nitro-stout, but my brother pointed it out. It wasn't that bad at all.

Nothin says contemplation and sincerity like a 40 in a paper sack on the curb. Sometimes you just have to keep it real.

Yes, it's pretty widely available for something touting itself as one of the rarest beers in the world.
