Happy New Beer CANp Sunday (Week 642)!

A little boy had a puppy named Paddy that he loved very much. One day, while attending school, Paddy ran out into traffic and unbeknownst to his young owner, was hit & killed. Upon returning home, his mother broke the bad news to him. To her shock & surprise, he did not react at all negatively & went about his afternoon routine of milk & cookies, followed by a nap. That evening, as they sat down to dinner & his father entered the house, the boy's eyes grew wide & he began to wail uncontrollably. When his mother inquired as to the cause, the boy replied, "I thought you said, 'Daddy was hit & killed by a car.'!" Oops. Good thing that Father's day isn't until next week ...

I am back on The CANQuest (tm), having made a major score yesterday of two (2) twelve-packs of this year's SN Beer Camp Across the World collection. My go-to bottle shop had let me know that they got an allotment (?) of just four (4) 12-packs & by the time that I got off of work, they were gone! 8=( Thanks to the local grapevine, I was able to find a place with a veritable backlog & so I bought two. One will be for me exclusively, the other to share with my guests on The Porch at Chez Woody with its annual, seasonal Grand Opening this Friday, 16 June 2017. I am not THAT greedy.

I began (earlier than this thread) with the Surly Lager CANlaboration, a VERY spicy beer that will be set aside & taken to a local sushi restaurant for a dinner acCANpaniment. Read all about it here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/281134/?ba=woodychandler#review

Man, next, I needed to get my fix, dig? Sugar & spice might be nice, but this hophead joneses for Mary Jane and her cousin, China White. Hey, read on & take a little trip with Bro, Woody of the Order of Disorder. Red Bull might give you wings, but I'll teach you how to fly! Man, we CAN put the moon in the rearview if you dig what I'm sayin'.

Whew! Man, my eyes are bloodshot & watering but I have a real taste for some hops. Maybe I'll just call off today. This is why it is so important to get an early start - a lie-down, an excursion into the rain locker (shower) & I'll be back on my feet in no time. In the interim, a review: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/281137/?ba=woodychandler#review

It is now clear that SN is not playing around this year & has no intention of taking any prisoners. Good luck & good nap! Call me if you need a ride home.

Medium-pale gold with a light haze, white foam head piled high on top; lots of lace draped behind... Aromas of orange, grapefruit, and citrus fruits covered in shellac... On the tongue, orangey citrus oils are immediate, bringing sticky pith and peel with an undercoat of resin... Medium-weight, bitterness and sweetness about on par, appropriately slightly chewy with a bit of dank stickiness on the finish... 5/19/17 canning...

That's all I got today, NBS - here's to new beer in your glass, cheers...

Hello NBS crew! At @cjgiant 's suggestion, I am trying to make a NBS contribution today. I love reading this thread every week, but I have a strange palate, so have refrained from contributing in the past. I pick up on notes that most others don't (onion/garlic among others), plus I do not detect many of the nuances I read about in other's reviews, so apologies if my adjectives are vague (or outright incorrect). Any pointers or corrections would be welcomed!

    Anyway, here we go!

Aslin - Bringing Sexy Back IPA
    6.4% abv - 5/16/17 (26 days old)

Thanks @cjgiant for the Aslin love! They are one of my favorite breweries, and Craig gave me this one and 3 others to try, all of which are new to me.

Dark orange, completely opaque pour. 1/4 inch off-white head recedes rapidly to a gray topcoat that lingers into eternity.

Smell is faint but all tropical. I get mango and orange, perhaps lemon.

Taste follows the nose. There's a slightly harsher bitterness here compared to what I'm used to with Aslin, but I can actually taste hops here, which is not always the case with these NE IPAs.

    Medium-full body.

Overall, this definitely ticks all of the "NE style IPA" boxes, although it's not as brazenly shooting for that ideal when compared to the other IPAs I've had from them. I enjoyed their "The Implication" DIPA more than this one, but they are both amazing brews that I want to drink again.

That seemed quite fine, glad you took a little time to share. Hope it wasn't too painful .

Totally agree with you on the "more bitter, leaning towards a more classic IPA" on that one. Also agree that The Implication was more enjoyable.

I'm glad you prodded me into it, ha. On the plus side, it took me over an hour to finish that beer. Was really trying to understand it...versus my usual "omg I love this must pour it down my gullet" approach to drinking.

Spent last week in Ohio, so today I'll be featuring beers from, you guessed it, Ohio.

First up is Creeper from Columbus Brewing

Nice billowing off white foamy head that rests beneath a nice even ring of sticky lacing. Kind of a pale gold, crystal clear body.

Nose is a little malty up front with some sweet hoppy spiciness kicking in with a few more aromas, like a hint of corn, sweet tangerine and like a soapy lemony pine.

Taste is a really aggressive, immediately hot tangerine that takes on bitterness a few seconds in. This really is a pretty hot beer, which is only exasperated by the thick, menacing, syrup like body. Finish has a touch of sweetness on a bone dry tongue.

Well made DIPA and despite enjoying them a lot, this is actually a nice departure from NEIPAs.

My last (?) new beer for the day: Clear and Present Dankness, a collaboration between Modern Times and Cellarmaker. Both are breweries I've only experienced via Jay, and this collab is no exception.

If any of you have ever read my IPA reviews or forum thoughts, you may recall I'm not a big fan of dankness in beers. That sickly sweet weed-like quality isn't for me. By way of example, I prefer Citra hops with about a month on them; that's when I find the dank qualities start to fade and the fruity qualities shine.

Thus, a beer named Clear and Present Dankness presents a potential challenge. Not all "dank" beers actually taste so (Enjoy By is sometimes devastatingly fresh, sometimes devastatingly dank, but it never really tastes that much like the latter), and even so, I can enjoy a dank beer if it's not over the top (I'm looking at you, Tree House Bright ). But still: the name does not inspire confidence in my palate.

(This brew, at 31 days old on the nose, might luck into my sweet spot after all.)

The aroma does feature some dank weed-like qualities, but it's well blended with very juicy notes - lemon, mango, papaya, pineapple, and star fruit, in some order - and a sweet, wildflower honey and cracker malt base. A touch of sharper green herbs rounds out the profile. All in all, however, the nose is quite restrained, surprisingly so for a 7% ABV IPA.

On the palate, the juicy flavors instantly pop, drowning your tongue in a sea of tropical fruit juice. Flavors mostly follow the nose. It's very, very good.

On the higher end for single IPAs (at 7%), this is a relatively full bodied brew, but it maintains a lively and active sting, and manages to finish semi-dry.

This is a really impressive beer overall, and damned delicious. I could definitely see this being a bomb of pure dankness when fresher. If I had to guess, I'd peg Citra, and possibly some New Zealand or Australian hops (edit: the website reveals Citra, Galaxy, Nelson, and Simcoe, with "a massive hop addition to the whirlpool with some Citra lupulin powder" - certainly a recipe for massive dankness! (Dankitude?)

(In retrospect, that's another non-surprise: I'm a sucker for Galaxy hops, and I find this beer super tasty!)

Cheers NBSers. If I don't enjoy another new brew, I'll still be following along.

Starting with something local this morning, well, afternoon.

    Crane's Farmhouse IPA w/ Brett.

Pours out a foggy, cloudy orange with three fingers of white, pillowy foam. Easily more head formation available. Great head retention with a few strings of lacing left behind. Aroma is teeming with grapefruit, and pine with delightful Belgian yeast esters, and spices behind. There is a sour funkiness throughout the aroma. Flavor profile is banana, grapefruit, and wheat bread with a twinge of Belgian yeast spice at the back. Not much sour funkiness to the flavor profile, although there is some there. Mouth feel is smooth, and velvety, with a medium thickness. Overall, nice notes hit throughout this beer. The brett stays well within check, only giving this beer a light film of funk in both the aroma and favor profile.

Good afternoon! I'm starting later than usual today as we had company visiting today, and now that Mrs. Z and her friend are off thrifting, I'll have my new beer...A collaboration between Brouwerij De Molen, and Jopen Bier, The Netherlands - "Sin & Remorse":

Bottled 20 Sept. '16, an imperial stout (10%) and poured at 58 degrees:

Thick, creamy two finger foam atop black with ruby edges pour; good clarity under long lasting cap; heavy lacing with solid ring to bottom of glass; a beautiful looking Stout. 4.75

Roast malt and roasted coffee nose. 3.75

Flavors of bitter roast malt and roasted coffee; cocoa powder; semi sweet dark chocolate; toasted black bread; char; no hint of the alcohol. 4.0

Medium full body; moderate carbonation; dry (rye) and a little fluffy (oats). 4.0

Overall, this stout drinks lighter than it feels. There is a strong bitter roast/char linger, which overwhelmed the coffee and cocoa notes. 4.0

If you are a fan of more dry, bitter roasted/coffee flavors, then this collaboration is one you should try. For me, too dry (rye) and too bitter compared to what I normally drink in the coffee Porter/Stout world. Tasty, but one was enough for me. Have a great Sunday - Cheers!

Wow, it's getting hot around here today. At least my methi is happy; that's an Indian herb (the plant that produces fenugreek seeds), and it's my first time growing it. Seems to prefer the sun

I also seem to have the perfect beer, too, thanks to @Dragginballs76 . Here's a really nice Gose by Three Rings Brewing in Asheville: Hi Wire.

It's extremely well constructed, briskly tart, dry with a milky fullness, and a good kick of salinity. Flavors are interesting here- on the usual platform of doughy malt is more of an assortment of fruit than expected. I'm getting lemon for sure, but also gentle touches of pear, apricot and white grape. It's got enough complexity to give me something different with each sip, yet never loses that tart/salty hit that screams Gose. Refreshing and delicious. High A- (4.35). Thanks a lot, Michael, loving it!

The heat and humidity are close to peak for the day. Went down to dog fest, yup a fest for people who love dogs, and had fun. Time to cool off!

El Wisco is branded as a Mexican Lager from Lakefront. It's a deep amber color, with a white 2 finger head, and not much lacing. The malt is upfront, with some bread/biscuit and caramel. Nicely balanced flavor with the malt coming through. Definitely some sweetness, but not too much, and light spicy hops in the mix. Medium body and a slightly creamy mouthfeel. This is simple and well made, perfect for summer.

Clear as a bell golden with a nice nearly white foamy head that leaves spotty and sticky lacing.

Nose has a Noble hop thing along with a hint of vegetable earthiness. Finishes out a bit floral.

Taste begins with a ever so slightly tart sting that immediately goes away. What happens next is a mashup of corn, dandelion and something like Saaz it seems like.

Fairly thin with the dryness talent of an industrial grade desiccant.

Happy NBS all! My new beer today is from SN's latest Beer Camp. I'm really pleased with all of the beers I've had from it so far. So much so that I went out and got a 2nd 12 pack while they were still around. The one I'm having today for NBS is my least favorite of the bunch, but I didn't have high hopes for it since it sounded like a novelty beer. That being said, it was still a pleasant beer to drink and was very good for what it is. Anyway, here it is, Thai-style Iced Tea Ale, brewed in collaboration with Mikkeller-

    3.76/5 rDev +6.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 3.75

Appearance- clear golden orange, One finger off white creamy head with abundant lacing
Aroma- black tea, lemon and orange, honey, black licorice as it warms (maybe this is the star anise? I'm unfamiliar with it)
Taste- follows the nose very closely. Not sweet as I was expecting based on the name of the beer
Feel- this was the best best part; medium bodied, creamy, soft, luscious
Overall- this was an interesting experimental beer that was pulled off pretty well I think. It had the iced tea/fruit thing going on but I still felt like I was drinking a beer. Flavors meshed well.

    Cheers all!

Happy Sunday NBS players. Such a nice weekend here on the island with the first real sustained summer heat wave. Spent the morning relaxing and doing nothing. Lounging on the deck now with some mets bball on the radio. Probably hitting the local beach for the first time later this afternoon.

My new beer today is Breakbeat ipa, from Elysian brewing. The brew features mandarina and equinox hops and carries a 6.8% abv. No apparent bottle date.

A nice amber color on the pour with a frothy white head. The nose is nicely floral with citrus fruit, sugars, and hops. The drinking starts with subtle and soft hops upfront. A rather smooth and soft flow that finishes with bitter hops. The hop notes really dominate and become stronger the more I consume. Pungent notes of bitter pine and resin that meld together with soft fruit notes. I mostly get mango, grapefruit, peach, melon, orange, lemon, and apple. The mouth feel is moderate but not terribly juicy at all. The raw hop feel upfront really combines well with the soft fruit notes.

Overall, it's no game changer but it's a pretty good beer. I get it it's now in-bev craft but there was a time when I actively sought out Elysian beers. At 5.99 a bomber it's worth a try.

Happy Sunday to everyone! Today I am drinking "Printemps" from Fantome.

It has a dark orange color to it and is heavily hazy.

The smell is funky, spicey, yeasty, and a bit alcholic, especially as it warms up.

The taste is a great balance between spicey and creamy. The yeast helps to balance out the spicey/earthy notes. There is also a bit of citrus fruits in it and some sweetness and slight burn from the alcohol.

The mouth feel is thick and like most other Fantome beers.

Overall this is another enjoyable beer from Fantome and is more spicey/earthy than other beers. In a way it tastes a bit like Spring since it tastes quite floral as all the flowers and vegetation bloom once again. Another outstanding and interesting beer from Fantome.
