    Happy Father's Day!
    Happy New Belgian IPA Sunday!

Pretty nice day here on the Western Slope, nice little hike today, around 88, sunny, breezy. Having a pretty tasty brew, glad to see it around here. Got the electric grill going, with some beef franks, chuck roast, potato salad. Rockies have taken the lead, bottom of the 8th. Might just be back with another new brew.

    New Beer Number 2:

    Primates Maibock, 7.5 ABV

Pours a light golden color and very clear, with a small white head with plenty of lacing. Smell and taste are big time bread and malt and the taste is sweet with a nice dark fruit alcohol finish and a little hop spiciness. Leaves a coating on the mouth that makes you want to keep drinking and is very smooth for a big beer. Overall a very nice tasty complex beer.

For my second (and final) new brew of the day, I'm going with a bourbon barrel aged barleywine - but not nearly as smooth and delicious as @zid 's choice. Steak, mashed potatoes, salad, and Uinta's Cockeyed Cooper.

American barleywines aren't my thing; I much prefer the English style. More than 2 years of age (on top of the barrel aging) haven't dulled the hops enough for my liking. All of the rest of the flavors - oak, vanilla, coconut, brown sugar, prunes - come together quite nicely.

It's a good brew, and probably excellent if ABWs are your thing. I won't be repurchasing, personally, although I'm going to enjoy this bottle.

Greetings from stormy Middle Tennessee, and happy Father's Day to all the BA dads out there! The rain cancelled our outdoor plans but it was a great family day here. We had brunch with my parents and now I'm sharing this beer with my son, talking about our next homebrew:

This is the 2015 version. Poured a cola-brown color with a moderate haze. A one-finger tan head formed and slowly settled, leaving nice lacing. Aromas of caramel, toffee, vanilla, cherries, and a hint of whiskey and oak. The taste was complex; a rich, sweet malty flavor with stone fruit notes, vanilla, and only faint whiskey. Full-bodied with a pleasing bitter finish with toffee and malt. Low-to-medium carbonation that fit for the style. I really enjoyed this - the whiskey barrel was there and complimented the beer without dominating the flavor. Great beer made even greater with the company. Cheers!

2017 Shades of Pale hogshead reserve #4

This is a very interesting barrel aged quad..Per the label - "A Belgian quad aged for 6 months in hogshead bourbon barells"

It pours a nice dark ale and smells like plum with a little hint of booze. the first sip was shockingly sour. Not bad, just not at all what I was suspecting. the sourness mellows as I drink more leaving me to think my brain was not ready for what my taste buds were throwing out. The barrel is more oak at the start but gives way to nice light boozy finish as it warms.

I've really no experience with sour beers so I really think I was just more surprised by that first sip. ABV at 12.5 really hits you like you'd expect a good BA beer to and I was much happier with the beer at the end of the glass than the beginning. I think a little time in the cellar might really do this beer some good. I have 3 more bottles so time will tell. I'm not sure if Shades of pale has any distro so if you find yourself in SLC, hit their taproom and pick up a bottle.

Good evening, all - back again! The GF came home and quickly grabbed a beer, so I will, as well. She'll get to sip on this one with me, though I'll take the bulk to do a review. I looked through the reviews on this one and saw regulars such as @woodychandler and @utopiajane logged reviews along with @Buck89 and @jkblr, among others.

I am guessing I have probably compared notes once or twice with Maria, but I liked [re-]reading her review of Sierra Nevada/Duvel Hoppy Belgian Style Golden and chose it for a comparison of her interpretation of the beer to mine.

To me, this beer pours beautifully, with a thick head that doesn't get out of control. It's fluffy and sits like meringue atop the brew. Slow to fade, but once it does, it leaves a memory of it on the glass.

I tended to agree with most reviewers that this was quite reminiscent of regular Duvel, I'm guessing the yeast is the primary culprit in that. I was noticing a slight spice and a little something else almost earthy along with some banana esters. I think this is where I agree with the statement, "Lots of spice both from hops and from the yeast and they marry so sweetly you cannot tell them apart." To me the lemon comes as more of an afterthought, almost as in I only get it after I think about it, but it is there. It seems to mix with the hops on a warmer beer.

The opening seems to be malt and yeast working together similar to a classic Duvel. A nice soft carbonation exists, and I agree with @utopiajane and others that this is a lighter offering. The hops make there presence shown next, spice and dry green pine needles, that mix in more than take over. I am getting less lemon than on the nose, but I feel there is something cleaning up this beer going into the ending, and it may be the lemon.

I agree this collaboration took a beer from the collaborator and made some adjustments to it to make it unique but not different. In the end, I think it's the clean finish that helps this beer become a quick drinker. The bitterness doesn't linger with each sip (but does sneakily build up lightly on the back of my tongue).

I think this would've gone down quickly even if it weren't a hot and humid day, the makeup just seemed to entice the next sip.

Greeting, NBS and I will add to the happy father's day chain. Not a huge celebration in our family, bt this year was pretty special. Last week for our bell choir and vocal choir at church and our grandson was christened. He has a whole congregation full of adoptive aunts, uncles, cousins, etc so we had an extended coffee hour with a bunch of food and just hanging out with friends and family. Cookout at our house with our kids and of course the tadpole. Good grilled steaks, fresh greens from the garden, and my son brought me some beer. Two from Deciduous and one from Stone which we will feature here.

Forgive the lack of a picture. Stone Enjoy After 4-20-17 was our two person bottle share. The pour was awesome. Hazy deeper gold color with a stunning pure white, dense, three finger head that lasted forever. Superb cling of lace to the glass. Yup...it sure is a looker, but I bet it would take an hour to pour it if it was warm...The aromas are tantalizing...not super-intense but a promise of goodness to come. More wild ale than IPA, there is an assertive level of funk on the lead line, but a counter-melody of pineaple and orange and grapefruit, and just the faintest descant of floral and resinous hops. This is interesting...to me it has just the remnants of an IPA and the beer has certainly taken a unique direction. The taste follows. While not bursting with boisterous, George Clinton levels of funkadelic-icity, it delivers an up front earthiness that is assertive, but more of a controlled groove. It seems the brett has mellowed and the IPA has blended into it, if that makes any sense. The citrus just blends in and play nicely with the brett. There is no sweetness, but there is a very Belgian character in the finish which is mildly spicy and definitely peppery. Mild bitterness underneath. It feels abrupt in that you taste it, then it is gone, and you want more. Only a mild peppery tingle remains. Quite dry, and if you are guessing I dig this beah you are absolutely correct. I am feelin this landing at a 4 or slightly above. Those expecting a face-blasting fresh IPA with developed brett character - this wont be their thing. For me, this oxymoron works.

I get the sense that Stone isn't one of the cool kids anymore and are victim of that new concept of not being craft enough. Yeah...ok...I get it....ummm, no I really don't. In my opinion, Stone makes good beer that is usually easy to find, usually fresh, and generally reasonably priced. I'm down with that.

I don't know a single thing about this brewery, but do you think this was a case of unintentional sour beer? Does the label mention it intending to be sour on there at all? I've had some really good unintentional sours, and some that have turned me off breweries entirely due to overall poor QC and other such issues (though usually I need to have evidence that a brewery is negligent or incapable in some other way before totally blacklisting them due to such an issue), so I'm interested in what you think here. Sounds like it was a fun drink either way, though. Cheers!

Thanks! Indeed, they both are tasty. Yellow Rose at the brewery is as good as it gets, and Community's Mosaic is a nice imitation.

My next one's a Real Ale beer I've meant to get to for a couple months:

I think that means my beer is at least 3 months old and possibly as old as 5 months.

My favorite thing about this brew? Check out this skin!
That's not from the head. That's from letting the glass sit for about 2-4 minutes. Wow, right?!? I can't get a good photo of the activity in the glass, but it's amazing. There has to be 1,000 bubbles rising at a time, but somehow the mouthfeel isn't rip-your-tongue-off crisp. Pretty cool.

And overall, the beer is pretty cool. It's inspired by the California Common, and it scores so highly with me because the brewer stayed true to those earthy bitter hops that make Anchor Steam so tasty. Pinsetter is rated at only 25 IBUs but you'd think it was 60+ ... very earthy bitter. The malt character is more caramel/mango than Anchor Steam, so in the end Pinsetter comes off like a mix of Anchor Steam and Brooklyn Lager. Fruity but with a little "darkness" to it, like toasted peaches instead of just peaches.

I had the same question of @ichorNet - it may be intentional, but my first thought when you mentioned the sour was that it might not be, especially as a "Belgian Quad."
