I didn't care for XXVIII and looking at the description for XXIX, it sounds a little boring to me too:

Malt: Pale, Wheat, C75, Chocolate, Midnight Wheat
    Hops: Millenium, Cascade, Tettnang
Other: Turbinado Sugar, Dutched Cocoa Powder, Cinnamon, Cayenne
Barrel Aging: 50% Aged in Bourbon and Rum Barrels

Will probably still pick up a bottle just to see, but I really loved XXVII with the apricot puree.

Absolutely delighted that Deschutes finally stopped pouring fruit into their Anniversary beers. First one I've looked forward to in a while!

Looks like they're heading on the Mexican hot chocolate direction. Personally I liked the fruit additions but will still need to "test" XXIX

Totally agreed, last one that I totally enjoyed from them was XXV, but the last 3, all fruit. XXIIIX was decent, but still too fruity, I'm loving the description of this new one. I have a vertical going back to XXI, minus XXII, so almost the entire set. XXIX is one that I can't wait for, and glad I waited on doing my vertical tasting, this will be a strong finish! That being said, anyone with an XX, please contact me, I'd love to get my hands on it. If I got an XX, I would consider my vertical finished and 100% completed, since I know XXII is impossible to get.

Agreed on the 27. Every time they use fruit (I believe oranges were a few years before that) it has been outstanding, even with age on it. Wasn't it figs for 28? I didn't think it was bad.

I love <100% BA beers, so this is one of my favorites, but I'm skeptical. Wish it had stayed on the sweeter side instead of getting on the spicy trend.

Wow, the fruit divide on their anniversary beers according to this thread is real (SSS and all, but still).

You're right, it just doesn't seem like there could much going on with this beer flavor-wise.

Yet another thick, barrel-aged cinnamon and chiles beer. I can't say that I'm a fan of the concept, so I'm looking to the rum barrels to save this and do something interesting.

Personally I am glad they are going this direction, honestly anything away from the fruit is a good direction. That said, I that those adjuncts may serve this beer well! I am excited for this, their last last 3, have been fruitier, so I am glad that they are going another way. Rum BA version though....,might be too sweet, but with the spices this year, I'd be interested in trying it.

Ok we have a consensus. Everyone hates the fruit except for the people that love the fruit. Glad we cleared that up.

I haven't been a big fan of the fruited Black Butte anniversary beers so I've mostly stayed away from the last few, but since I was a huge fan of XXII, I gave last year's release (XXVIII) a try and thought it was superb. That said, this year's release sounds like it's more up my alley so I'll be sure to buy a couple of bottles.

Had this on tap at the pub the week of release and was underwhelmed by it. The cinnamon came through but clouded the barrel aspects. Felt a little one dimensional. Some aging may do it well.

Based on early reviews on this site and untappd, it seems a lot of people share raynmoon's opinion on XXIX. Bummer, because I've thoroughly enjoyed the last few years' vintages.
