Happy New Colored CAN Beer Sunday (Week 646)!

I like that today's theme is about childhood/childishness/childlike joy since that was my inspiration the other day upon buying a small box of Crayola crayons which were on sale as an impulse buy while standing in a queue. I was reminded of my favorite color as a child: purple & "Harold & the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson. It also put me in mind of my mischievous, childish personality & the time in grad school when we enacted Shirley Jackson's short story, "Charles" & I got to be Charles. "Why did Charles hit the teacher?" I asked. "Because she tried to make him color with red crayons. Charles wanted to color with green crayons. So he hit the teacher. She spanked him and said nobody play with Charles. But everybody did." Who hasn't wanted to drink beer with me IRL at some point? My classmates all agreed that I am an adult Charles & so today, I am bringing my crayons & my colored beers to our weekly get-together.

I began with a primary color, blue, primarily to prime the pump & cleanse the palate with a misnamed sour. It was actually quite tart & the two should not be used interchangeably. Take note of the gorgeous color.

If I am regressing into my childhood today, then it was fitting that I should have a quiescent frozen treat next. Orange you glad that I am doing this?

Next, I going to really irritate my parents and not eat, but drink, some Yellow Snow! I CANnot remember how many times I was warned about doing just this sort of thing, CANsequently, when I got a Sno-Cone machine for a present one year, Yellow Snow Cones were my forte!

After this, I wanted to use the green crayon, but Tree House didn't supply me with any Green 8=( & Green Flash does not CAN (as yet, as far as I am aware), so after I got rapped with a ruler across my knuckles & my knucklehead lips were smacked, I smacked my lips for a red crayon:

That's it for today (I think). Let me know if you have any ideas for future crayon-related New Beer Sundays.

You know what I like? Beer! You know what I like even more? New Beer Sunday!

Today is the quintessential day. The weather is stellar, my family is in a great mood, and I'm not doing a damn thing other than sitting in my chair on the screened porch while enjoying a world class new beer. :sunglasses:

Let's get to it now. Tired Hands Oursaison was sent to me by @larryi86 (or so I remember) a while ago. I just came across it in my cellar when I was rummaging through my beer.

It pours a clear light yellow with a 2 finger white bubbly head. Retention is excellent and there is scattered lacing on my glass. Aromas of citrus, lemon/lime, and floral notes. Minimal cracker from the pale malts and some grassy/earthy notes followed by hints of spice and funk. The taste is slightly tart, with lemons and limes, sour grape. Floral hops along with oak notes fill in just a touch of cracker and hint of funk on the finish. Light and crisp with fantastic carbonation. Quite easy to drink on a warm summer's eve. A very well made Saison that reminds me a bit of the Hill Farmstead beers I have had in the past.

    Cheers all!

I was actually fairly annoyed, because I wasn't sure if this was recently released, even looking for dating on the box.

I asked the guy is this recent, and he's like oh yah... I get home crack open a bottle... uh this isn't recent.

Either way I am not some freshness freak, and the whole IPA freshness thing is overblown. 3-4 months though is playing with my no go zone, for any beer style.

Mostly though I bought it cause the last collaboration back of DB was one of the most amazing collab packs I ever had.

Thanks for the opening. @lordofthewiens . I LOVE hearing stories from your specialty. I've been a elementary school teacher for 17 years, and a parent for nearly 11. I have many funny stories as well. Kids are amazing, particularly when given the opportunity to share what they think and feel. I was kinda brought up between the old paradigm, "Children should be seen and not heard," and a more progressive approach in the 70's, where we were't relegated to eternal silence. I like telling my kids about how I "know" how to go completely old school. They know it's a pretty idle threat.
    Or is it?

While I stand by the unnecessary statement, I lied and did combine them after the GF left them both to me with 1/4 snifter left (I drank them down to about 1/8 each). One of the better combos (I forget that Germanic word we learned many threads ago), but not really too different than the individual beers, as expected.

Starting out today with another one in this Luponic series, #006

Clear, yellow with a billowing fluffy white head. Settling reveals a pretty consistent skirt of lacing. Nose is a peculiar vortex of pine, olive, veggie and a fresh #2 pencil..... maybe the shavings. Things get much better with the taste, as maybe a hint of olive is the only smell remnant as a tiny fruit blast in the shape of juicy fruit gum intermingles with a very present malty backbone; like purposeful and not from being old, and just barely some pine as this medium bodied, dry beer leaves a little alcohol taste on exit.

I was worried after smelling it that it was just going to be mediocre at best, but taste turned this around big time. Very solid beer with great depth.

Carton Brewing Beach, a session ale brewed with orange zest. Pours a slightly cloudy yellow with copious effervescent bubbles and a well retained head that is leaving a nice amount of lacing. Smells of lightly roasted malts and oranges. Taste is absolutely dominated by very bitter orange zest. As a matter of fact, that is all I can taste. Light bodied and well carbonated with a slightly dry mouth feel. Unfortunately I'm finding this quite unenjoyable and it has resulted in a drain pour.

    Afternoon, folks...

Started my day with a good ole' breakfast of steak and potatoes...
Boiled potato quarters tossed in a mustard seed and shallot vinaigrette (salt, pepper, olive oil, white wine vinegar); steak with a quick salt and pepper rub, pan-cooked in olive oil...

Took a walk with the missus after... Sunny, lightly breezy, and "warm-getting-hotter" here on the island long... Home now, air conditioners on, popping open my new brew for the day...

    New Brux IPA Sunday

Featuring Finback Brewery's Fold "brux IPA"...
Brewed with "brux trois" yeast, though, for you purists out there, I could find no indication as to whether it's Saccharomyces Bruxellensis Trois or Brettanomyces Bruxellensis Trois Vrai, or both... Not that I'd be able to tell the difference anyway...
5.5% abv... Opaque dark lemonade-yellow body with a fairly big-bubbled white foam head a few fingers high... Left some lace trails behind, and a thin foam cap persisted down to the bottom... Aromas of earthy citrus, like lemon pith and grapefruit peel, with a subtle "barnyard" influence... On the palate got lots of tangy lemony zest and a funky yeast tang... Bright, light, amply carbonated, soft and fresh, with a 6/28/17 canning...
Don't know if its just me, but it seems like there was more of a brettanomyces craze a few years ago, and its since faded, replaced with a greater interest in double dry hopping and lupulin powders. Not a complaint, mind you - just an observation (I love me some double dry hopping and lupulin dust :sunglasses:)... Be that as it may, I haven't had a "yeast-centric" beer in a while, and this one was just great...

Here's to that new beer in your glass, NBS; cheers...

I forced the head a bit too much, but after the giant latte colored head drew back, it left a decent curtain of lacing over this pitch black beer. Certainly the presence of molasses, but otherwise it's leaning hard towards a sweet, piney smell. Taste scurries quick towards bitter, smokey molasses. Certainly some pine swirling around in there too. Body seems lighter than I expected.

I picked up a bunch of new brews this afternoon. I'm not sure how many I'm going to get to today, but I'm going to give it a valiant effort.

Starting with: Funky Buddha French Toast double brown ale.

First question: does it in fact taste like French toast? Well, yes, it does. FB does a remarkable job at nailing the profiles they're shooting for, many of which are off the wall and unconventional.

Second question: is it good? Again, the answer is yes. It's not quite as sweet as Wide Awake It's Morning, but it still is very sweet. Maple syrup and brown sugar swirl around a strong caramel malt base, occasionally spiced through with cinnamon and vanilla.

Definitely a dessert beer, and definitely a bomber I'm going to have to finish off later. A very enjoyable choice to start the train of new beers, however.

    Victory Home Grown American Lager

It's a beautiful summer day in Philadelphia. Decided to check out the Spruce Street Harbor Park, where I had a couple of Victory Home Grown American Lagers.

They poured a hazed pale yellow with a nice-sized, creamy white head that leaves solid lacing.

Fruity aroma of lemon, mango and pineapple. Floral hops, more lemon, mild bitterness and a clean finish in the light and refreshing taste.

Medium bodied, very slightly creamy, with modest carbonation.

This is delicious. Perfect outdoor summer beer. Enjoy your afternoons, BAs.

I spent Saturday riding my bike around Saluda, NC, partaking of the Coondog Festival at lunchtime. We headed back to South Carolina before the thunderstorms hit. So I felt physically as well as mentally exhausted watching the brutal TdF stage this morning. The summer heat is in full effect here, so I am staying inside, trying NODA's Good Will Hopping.

This was canned 6/27/17 and I picked it up at the brewery on July 3. I enjoyed it on tap, and in equal measure at home. It's color was a little darker, and not quite as hazy as the few NEIPA's that I have had from Singlecut, Prison City, Tired Hands, and a few other one-off releases. Fragrant with tropical fruit, substantial bitterness, along with the pineapple and grapefruit peel. I have no opinion as to whether the style description is accurate. I am enjoying it very much and hope NODA will continue to release it periodically. Nice change of pace from HD 'n R.

Boothbay Craft Brewery 10 Lewis Session IPA. From Maine. It is 5% ABV and 40 IBU. Canned June 23, 2017 so about two weeks old when I cracked it open.

I'm not sure how new this one is but it is new in the can for 2017. Boothbay Craft Brewery is a brewpub that has been around for a few years but they only just started canning their beers. This one is a year-round offering so it may have been readily available at the pub for some time. But I have never been to the pub. This can only be found in Maine, where I happened to visit yesterday and picked up a few Maine beers that I cannot get in New Hampshire.

A nice session IPA all around. It pours a cloudy yellow under a foamy white head. Vibrant citrus and fruit aromas greet the nose with a more muted sweet sourdough barley malt character beneath it. The body is light to medium but smooth. The taste has a bright citrus hop presence from start to finish and it does not linger long at the end. But it sure was refreshing in the sunny, 82 degree weather we were getting around here.

Rapidly changing it up for my palate with a Stone Mocha IPA.

I never had the opportunity to try Dayman (ah-AH-ahhh!), so I can't compare these two. I can, however, look at it in terms of Stone's regular IPA ... but you know, with coffee ... so ... kind of not. :flushed:

It turns out it's a crappy comparison, to boot! I didn't bother to check the ABV on this thing, assuming it clocked in between 6-8%. Surprise, surprise: this is an imperial IPA! :grimacing:

The bitterness is massive, displaying a bold edge few brewers are willing to show with modern IPAs (even Sierra Nevada has backed off in terms of bitterness). It's got a big, sweet malty backbone, and loads of hop flavors, from piney to grassy to herbal to citrus peel.

Then there's the coffee, displaying wonderful roast and chocolate tones throughout. Stone didn't step down any of the DIPA characteristics, but just added coffee.

I've had a bunch of pale coffee brews by now, including IPAs, but this one probably retains the most pure brash IPA character. Incredibly full of flavor. I'm kind of glad I didn't get a six pack, as drinking this regularly would be a challenge, but it makes for a wonderful one-and-done.
