If you hav. e the time and are going to Troegs, look into a tour (needs to be booked online $5). You get a starter beer, green beer (on the tour), and a finisher, along with a pint glass. My wife and I have done it 13 times Also, they have scratch beers and if on Saturday go in the shop and buy some brownies, guaranteed you will enjoy them.

Prior to your comment no one said it was a "must-hit". A few people said it was worth a visit and one said "absolutely" go if you are in Hershey. What's the harm in visiting a brewery that has been important to the area (first Harrisburg now Hershey) for 20 years?

Here's my opinion on 3 must hit breweries in the area:

    Tröegs
    Pizza Boy
While you are heading to or from Pizza Boy, stop in Ever Grain. Their stuff is unreal.

    Bottleshop = def. Breskis.

I agree. I was a bit jaded by my visits and the beers I tried, but it is absolutely worth a visit in Hershey. I shoulda left it at that.

Another question I forgot to ask is if there are any local beers other than Pizza Boy, Lancaster or Spring House that I should be looking out for? Beers I can bring home.

I would keep an eye out for South County cans, especially if you like hoppy beers. They're from south of York, Fawn Grove I believe. Not sure where that fits in the whole local scheme of things, but I'd be surprised if you could get their stuff up by you... The aforementioned Breski Beverage usually has their stuff in stock, though I looked just a few minutes ago at their website and they only had Day Rider, their session IPA. Good beer. Not sure where else might have their stuff.

I've liked everything i've had from Funk Brewing, can get several of their offerings in cans. If you want a drive you could head to elizabethtown and give them a visit, moo-duck is only a few blocks away and Cox isnt too much further of a drive.

Good call on Funk. Forgot all about them. Cans in Etown could be nonexistent, though. Might be worth a call before a visit if cans are pulling you there.

If he's taking I-78 all the way, the original Funk location in Emmaus is only about 2 miles off the highway. They only sporadically release cans though.

If you happen to go out towards Pizza Boy/Al's - definitely hop off 81 or 83 and head downtown to Harrisburg.

Zero Day Brewing. They are in Reily Street behind Midtown Cinema smack in the heart of the city.

not sure when you did your trip, but I am nearby now and think youve been given some good advice on the thread, hit up Pizza Boy which was fun and picked up a lot of cans, Ive liked Brass Rail, but would also say to hit up Breskis on Eisenhower Boulevard, the beer guy Jeff knows his stuff and always has some must find local cans, plus they do crowlers there now of lots of local flavors.
Also definitely go to Ever Grain, its probably 25 mins from Hershey but some of the beers were great and had a very cool feel and vibe. I made it to Boneshire last night and liked the beers and think it is a pretty solid stop as well. Hope youve enjoyed the visit if you have already been, the south central PA scene seems to be exploding with new places these days.

We went two weeks ago, thanks anyway, but since the thread was bumped....
We went to Troegs for lunch. Great, BIG, brewery. The food was a wow for me, didn't even need dinner, and they had Cultivator on tap which made me very happy.

We did Smoked for dinner the second night. Great food and Nimble Giant on tap. Win-win.

Stopped at Shangy's on the way home and, I had no idea about this buying a full case rule, so prevented me from buying a lot of stuff. But Citrus IPA from Funk came in right before I got there and they allowed me to buy 2 6s of it. It's a great IPA and anyone here in NY who has tried it loves it as well. Picked up a Wicked Weed BA coffee stout too, which I can't get in NY. Found 10-day old Shape at the distro next to where we gassed up and got a 4 of that as well. $11 bucks, a lot cheaper than what I pay here. Great trip.

Gotta add, hit Duck Donuts on the way home....I'm not a donut guy, but damn they're good.

Glad you had an enjoyable visit. A little stunning to me that Shangy's hasn't hopped on the six pack and single bottle/can train yet. Is there something that prevents them from doing that, or are they just slow on the uptake?

And yeah, the food at Troegs is just out of sight. Love it.

They had a mix-6, single bottle room but whatever they had in there was stuff I can get near me or stuff that wasn't very impressive. They had Hardywood stuff in there but I'm going to Virginia next month and I'll probably get that there.

I wanted Weyerbacher Barely Legal, but not a whole case of it. I went to 3 breweries in my week and a half off, my 12 of Funk, 4 Shape and the Wicked Weed made me pretty happy.

Ah, okay. Makes a little more sense, then.

Maybe weird to ask, but what did you eat at Troegs?

I don't remember what the wife got (fish taco, maybe?) but I got the brisket sandwich and we got the poutine fries and pickled veggies to share. Absolutely delicious.

Maybe the blackened catfish wrap... ? Either way, glad you had a great visit. Have to get back there soon to further explore the recently revamped menu.
