    Well said.

I prefer the private conversations. If I receive a ridiculous trade request, I send a quick and polite reply, no thank you. I don't think the person that sends the ridiculous trade request deserves a dozen trolls responding with responses like.... "Not even close"... or, "Dude, do you even understand the secondary value of this wicked rare whale which is due in part to my celestial navigational skills and my ability to time major market events"... or my personal favorite, "Here is my money value of time analysis".

You learn a lot about potential trade partners in private conversations. I get it, case counts matter and there are additional considerations beyond the bottle price that you paid at the brewery, but if you are trading SR-71 you know what you want in return. That is the point, a beverage is worth what you as the trader are willing to trade that beer for to another BA. I have traded beers $4$ that were worth far more on the secondary market than the beers that I received in return and I didn't lose the trade, I just really wanted to try the other beer. The only BA that annoys me is the trader that is always trying to win the trade and frankly open reply is not going to fix the have to win the trade mentality. A polite no thank you does this trick for me every time.

No. The abuse will only skyrocket with the fact that you can post any type of trade you want nowadays. Unless you go back to the old style of having to be more specific on your trade request, then leave it as is.

Entertaining - yes, Helpful - no

It's the internet so you can't stop negative posts, but I miss being able to ask good questions and having people ask me good questions. Creates extra work for the staff since they have to deal with all the trolls but overall I think it allows the community to educate new traders and allows everyone to gain some insight about their potential trades.

I would be interested in seeing what it's like commenting on trades, since I wasn't around back when it was enabled. The only downside for me would be if myself and someone else preliminary agree to a trade only to have some asshole come in and talk the person I'm dealing with out of it because in his mind it's not fair.

That would piss the hell out of me, because his idea of "fair" might be totally different from the next person. Beer trading isn't an exact science...it's relative based on someone's need/want.

We've all seen post with questionable valuation. But which is worse, the person who posts something ridiculous, or the trolls. Which adds more negativity to the site/ community. Which one would encourage/discourage community growth?

IMO trolls are the much more irritating. You already have the option to pm someone regardless of your intent.

I was one of the people who felt the mods went too far before and happen to think the most recent relaxation of the rules was a pretty good mix.

    I'd vote no

    Cheers!

I don't understand this talk of public bidding wars, that was never an issue when comments were enabled. Bidding wars can take place via PM now just as they could then.

Folks that are being total dicks can be moderated but there will no doubt be the hype men with the "generous offer!' on what may obviously not be generous or "it's gonna take a lot more than that!" type comments. There's going to be a constant onslaught of attempts to manipulate "value".

I also see the benefits. But there's no way to have true transparency without a lot of rules and restrictions.

There should be an option to enable replies on your post. Give people an option. I moved away from other sites based on how many people want to talk crap now. I just got sock of clicking on people's posts and seeing so much trash talking by some mob mentality folks

Create a forum for people to discuss beer valuations and keep it away from the destruction of someone's trade thread.

I can see both sides of it. Sometimes I think trades become public shaming sessions if people don't like the ISO/FT. And it could become a public auction. But then again it's good to see what others think

I guess it depends on how sensitive members are going to be. If someone puts up a sixer of Kona Longboard Lager and is asking for a case of Heady in return and someone comments, "Dude, you're wayyy off!", I would hope that doesn't make the OP run crying to a moderator. Along the same lines, I hope there would be more constructive comments than just trashing the OPs request.
Having been around and seen the old way, I know there will be a lot of both. I guess it just boils down to whether members can be thick-skinned and if the mods can handle report overload.

Absolutely, for all the reasons listed so far, of course. I consider myself fairly experienced (71 BA trades) and find the comments invaluable--especially in the current marketplace, where so much value of the higher end beers is simply "what is the secondary price?"

BeerAdvocate, IMHO, took a step back with the implementation of the current no comments policy.

Thanks for the opportunity to include our input!

As an aside, it seems like whether you're for or against this has a lot to do with whether you expect the best or worst from people. Or whether you believe that a community can self-correct (with the help of moderation).

Was thinking about this after visiting the Offshoot Beer thread. They've decided to take a more closed, non-responsive approach to dealing with negative feedback from BAs, presumably for brand management reasons. But you can choose to go very much the opposite way, the way of transparency, like @ModernTimesJacob. It's not an exact parallel, but the one made me think of the other.

Personally never got anything positive from it. Always someone saying you need to add to protect value of their beer. If you bring it back allow the person who posts the thread to block or delete unwanted content. Or pace a complaint around trolling. This would eliminate much of the abuse

I like not having it. If you aren't interested in a trade move one.

It's the people that feel the need to comment on every trade post with no intention of ever making a trade for ops bottle that I don't like. Nobody cares about your "2 cents".

Only good aspect of allowing comments is to help new traders to not fall for some of the ridiculous trade offers that are made on this site.

    Bring back the replying.

I would like to think that people can be nice to one another. I'm sure there are many people that hold beers on higher value than others. I would think that if you don't like someone's trade then why even look? And why comment? Personally I hold no value to cantillon, de garde, or any sours/wild ales. I know they trade at a high level to some. But I wouldn't trade a shelf beer for it since I don't like the beer. But I'm not going to make comments to someone else who is asking for a top tier BA stout for one. To each their own. Hopefully we can all be respective of each other.

    But bring back the replys.

I like this suggestion. If people are looking for feedback (or would welcome it), they could enable it for their post.
