Since one my enlightened friends bought Spaten Optimator for a college party in the mid-80s, I have loved Dopplebocks. Today, I usually buy from a rotation of Celebrator, Optimator, and Salvator, but when I go out to beer pubs/breweries, I rarely find dopplebocks (only at Gordan Biersch and a local German restauarant).

It would be neat to see some of the American craft breweries producing this style, even if only seasonal. Any ideas on the lack of love? Other styles passed it by?

Great Divide Wolfgang is amazing. Try that if you haven't.

I agree that the style is great and lacking in the states (along with lots of other classic styles).

Dopplebocks are one of my favorite styles. Prefer the Germans, but Shiner made one a few yrs ago (Commemorator) that was really good. I don't think anything "has passed it by". A beer infused w/ liver and fava beans tends to invoke more chatter on beer geek internet forums, but the great classic styles will always remain just that.

Great Lakes Doppelrock is a good American craft doppelbock. Capital in Madison, WI also makes several good ones. Autumnal Fire is a fall seasonal doppelbock of theirs, very tasty.

Beyond these and Wolfgang, there isn't much though. Definitely a shame.

    Yes to this.

I wish they would offer this is in six packs. And not just seasonally.

Maybe has to do with the triple decoction mashing, extended boils, long fermentations and even longer lagerings. Not the easiest or most economical beer to make, at least not one that will compete with the German classics. Probably lots of shortcuts could be taken, but at what cost to the product quality? I am a big fan of them though.

Bells Consecrator comes to mind as one that is out there. Expensive beer though. About double Salvator.

Thanks for the details on the brewing process. This makes sense in terms of time to market, and as you stated, economics in general...

Andechs makes the best doppelbock I've ever head. Weihenstephaner also makes a killer one.

I'm a big fan of the style and this is the perfect time of year for it. Just bought an Wheihenstephaner today actually. Check out S'muttonator for a good American version if you can.

I agree that Smuttonator is one of the best domestic examples of the style. Victory St. Victorious is another one. Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel is one of the crowning examples of the style, but the more I drank it in Germany, the more I realized that it's a REALLY sweet beer. Tons of malt complexity, but pretty syrupy.

Quite a few breweries in WI brew dopplebocks, though you might not have luck finding any of them outside of the state. Capital, as mentioned earlier, has a bunch all of which are tasty, IMO. There are even a couple barrel aged variations, one from Hinterland another from Sprecher. Must have something to do with all the German heritage. :astonished:
