I agree with a lot of the statements above. Commenting on trades can help answer a lot of readers' questions without everyone having to initiate a private chat. If individuals are found to abuse the chat system, they should be barred from replying in the forum (or removed from beer trading all together), but the community as a whole should not be punished.

Dear God, no. Beer trading forums are a cesspool of people who think that their opinions are facts; of people who don't know that funky deals get done privately so that kind-hearted traders don't get inundated with a million similar requests. Removing the ability to just post hit-and-run comments has made trading so much more pleasant, and has focused more heavily on those who actually have the beer in question, as opposed to those who merely have an over-valued opinion.

This is probably the best idea of what I've read. Giving OP the option to allow/not allow comments/replies on their thread, would be the best way to go. Let him/her decide what's useful on their own post, or not.

For as long as I have been trading on here and other sites, just having the option to disable replies is a great middle ground. Pretty much every site (and this one before heavy rule changes) was a cesspoll of troll remarks in the trade sections.

I don't trade a lot anymore, (and probably the same reason a lot of people dont), because distribution is getting really good, excellent smaller breweries are popping up, and hell, NE style IPAs are really easy to brew at home, and are damn tasty.

PLEASE bring this back. Many have left BA for this reason. I personally have gone away from here to trading on other forums due to this feature not being available.

I feel much safer doing trades on BeerAdvocate and would prefer to trade here. Ever for the most experienced trader, this option is needed as you may be WAYY off in your trade and the feedback helps. If you need more admins to patrol the trade forums and comments, send me a message. I'd be willing to help if needed.

The FT forum is nothing than a my whale for your whale deal, can't remember the last time I looked at it. I enjoyed my last two trades with BAs strictly locals to a set dollar amount, I got to try some great beers from OK and TX I'd never ever see. I'm up for more stuff like this.

The subjectivity of what is considered "trolling" is the huge sticking point in my mind.

I maintain that IF the forums allow comments, nothing but racist or truly offensive stuff gets blackballed (much like the rest of the forums).

Mods should basically not be needed unless extreme trolling.

People whining about trade value will come in like a tidal wave; and if mods are deemed necessary for crybabies, then keep the forums free of comments. We are adults.

I like the request for user feedback, I also like NO replies on trade posts. I personally get exhausted by the amount of thread$#itting that it brings. If someone likes the ISO/FT, they'll make an offer. If not, they _should_ just move on. This opens up what is wildly subjective (perceived trade value) to a HUGE peanut gallery that really have no dog in the fight.

The majority of responses seem to be in favor of commenting returning. I agree that it would be nice to give the OP the option of whether or not comments should be enabled for the post. This would also help satisfy those who trade who don't appreciate the "threadshitting". Since auctions are free game at the point I think being able to comment on someone's lopsided post would be free game and could be especially helpful for new traders.

My vote is for enable replies. Would it be possible for mods to be able to approve replies or would that be too cumbersome?
Perhaps a new 'role' could be created, e.g. 'Trader Helper' and by default all Traders get this role. If they abuse replies they lose the role indefinitely.

I think this issue is two fold.

    1. I think there should be a separate forum for even $/ local 4 local trades. The other forum should be listed as "big beers" or something along those lines. People in search of anything with an acronym or hype will know exactly what section to post in.

    2. If those 2 forums were created AND comments allowed I'm pretty sure comments would only need to be watched in one of those forums.....everyone's concern over trolling comments are aimed at the whale posts I'm pretty sure. "Bro you're not even close" and "I'd ask way more for that" and such other nonsense.

There are a lot of people on here that I'm sure get uneasy when they see all these beers with acronyms asking for a bunch of other beers with acronyms. I think that a change similar to the above would make the site a lot more "friendly" or "appealing" to a lot of newer traders and ones that aren't whale hunting.

@Todd @dmbforever does this seem reasonable or am i delusional?

I'm all in favor of making the site fun and when applicable...entertaining, when feasible.

I would not mind comments, but as stated prior....people would abuse this for various reasons.

Its a very good suggestion to possibly break down the trade forums into sub forums if it helps people target certain trades... $4$, locals, brewery only/limited releases

Thats ultimately a decision Todd would have to make moving forward.

Whatever we decide to do, I'll stand by it and do what I can to help out.

    Cheers!

People really left this site just because they couldn't reply to messages? Seriously? I'd say majority HAD to have been the trolls. What's the big deal in sending somebody a private message if you have a question??

Yeah, I'm with you on this. Again, I wasn't around when comments were enabled, but did it make that big of a difference to people? I definitely enjoy joking around and laughing on this site, but I tend to keep that out of the trading arena and am in the business of making the trade partner happy, not necessarily to laugh. And I'm a funny guy. My mom tells me so.

I've never known BA trading with comments enabled. So I'm kind of trying to understand how this worked previously.

Obviously you still need to exchange shipping info, which would be private. But would you still private message the OP to let them know your interest or do you have to be the first person to respond to the trade thread?

And now that auctioning is allowable I wonder how that might change things. It could end being a bidding war for some beers!

    "I can do this trade"
"I can do it with a plus"
    "I'll do it ++"
I'll do it with 2 pluses, I'll ship tomorrow, and shoot you a label!"

No, auctioning perse was not allow (that sort of shenanigans went on in PMs though)

Mostly if I posted something like FT: KBS ISO: Fou

People would tell me how far off I was, how it would never get done, and how much I need to add. If I was a brand new trader, maybe this would be helpful, but if I actually just wanted to trade KBS for Fou, I might not get it done, or I might not.

That's what I don't like about comments, they allow the community to dictate what they things is 'fair' on a trade, when the only thing that is fair is what the two parties agree to, which is mostly done via PM anyways.
