List some comparable substitutes and their prices.

I understand. Sorry for the confusion. When I said comparable products, I was talking about those that are truly comparable - so those that age for as long. All the ones that came to mind age for approx. 12 months.

Even though Bourbon County is NOW an AB baby and is more expensive than it used to be. It used to be considerably cheaper - less than half the cost of a JO beer. Just as an example.

I know you won't release this information (even privately)-and with good reason-but I'd be really curious to know what the marginal cost is on a bottle of your BA stouts.

Beace, he's on to you. Time to sell your private jet and Italian car collection.

Why is it that a nice cordial discussion has to be met with hyperbolic comments? I'm not accusing him of gouging, I am talking consumer preferences and economic costs. It is just that simple.

Let's all keep in mind that we make about 15K BBLs of beer a year. So when you talk about scale don't compare us to Founders, Goose Island, Firestone, or any large craft brewer. If you don't like the price don't buy it. Meanwhile we will focus on making the best beer we can and continue to employ over 140 people here in Athens Oh. BBORO drops in 10 days, distro too.

I fully support you guys. I want to make that clear.

I understand that you are not the same size and do not receive the economies of scale that you would if you were. That said, although I understand the desire to support local farmers, family and local operations (and the preferences that influence someone to pay more for an otherwise comparable product from someone that is none of those things), cost does come into play.

Again, my curiosities are simply to better understand why JO prices are substantially more than others, even when taking into consideration JO small size, etc.

Love what you guys do, keep doing it, and I'll keep supporting you. Just maybe am not able to afford as much as I'd like

You can no doubt tell from the responses that Beace and most everyone here has heard these complaints time and time again. It's clearly frustrating to him when people fail to understand the big picture and just what the true costs and efforts are for an outfit like Jackie O's to produce products at this level of quality. There's more to it than the typical beer geek can even grasp.

Let's also point out that I don't think a lot of brewers would have this discussion with random beer geeks on the internet, but lucky for us, Brad is a glutton for punishment!

He certainly doesn't owe anyone here an explanation.

He's absolutely right: if you think it's too expensive, don't buy it.

@beace I certainly appreciate your transparency on this topic. I was in the same boat as some of the others in this thread until I had some of the offerings, on draft, immediately went insane and bought one of everything available.

The pricing is high, which I know neither of us can debate, but it's well worth every penny. I've been yet to be disappointed because I know it is important to you that it turns out well.

I will always gladly pay $11.99 for anything barrel aged Jackie O's, and i'm super excited to see all these new sours and berliners hit distribution. The NW part of the state used to get left out a lot but even we are seeing all these beers. I love that Jackie O's tries to make sure there is enough beer to hit everyone in the state and continue to make sure quality is delivered. Anyone complaining, use your right to not buy them and us loyalists will pick up the slack and take your share. Every visit to the taproom or brewery is a treat and well worth the 2.5 hour drive. Jackie O's goes out of their way to make sure every customer feels like they are with family and at home and Brad goes way above and beyond to answer all the crazy questions about his beer. I don't care if they start charging $12.99/bottle good beer and good people are worth the cost of admission.

@beace Is the bolded just informational, or can the lay person like myself actually buy a 1/6bbl keg from you guys?

That's cool (other than it'll make things more crowded and BBORO will go quicker). That said, it doesn't matter because I need a stash of it, so I'll get there in time to ensure it happens. (Plus, I haven't been to a bottle release in AGES!)

I'm so excited, I even typed "this" instead of "that".
