    Morning folks,

I responded to a FT trade post for a few beers I was interested in acquiring. I explained to the OP that I was picking up his ISO from a friend, and that I understood he would have other offers, but if nothing worked out would he be interested in the trade. He agreed to hold out for my bottle and CLOSE the trade. Because of the nature of the trade and value of the bottles we agreed to swap pictures of the bottles via text. Fast forward to yesterday when I meet my friend for dinner to pick up the bottle. I was surprised to find out that the bottle I received was a different vintage than the one I agreed to trade to the OP - I received a '16 and originally thought I was getting a '17 (the vintage the OP wanted). I made the OP aware of the discrepancy last night. My question is - what is standard trading protocol? I still want to conduct the trade with the OP, but it's not the vintage he was originally looking for and the '16 has a higher trade value than his original ISO, '17. Should we scrap the original trade and start over? I want to be fair so if it's protocol that I honor the original trade then I guess I'll have to bite the bullet. Help appreciated gents -

    Cheers

I'm more than happy to post the actual beers involved, but not sure it makes a ton of difference right now and I don't have the OPs permission to post his screen name or FT/ISO.

If he wants the 16, honor the original trade request. You made the mistake, not him. Also, forget about perceived difference in trade value between 16 and 17, you are not negotiating a multi-million dollar business deal. Beer trading should be about sharing great beer, not squeezing every last ounce of "value" out of a trade.

I can't agree enough with you. If someone wanted to get more out of a beer for a one year difference I'd laugh and add them to the do not trade list.

Couldn't agree with this more. @CRWalton you'll also realize that you might meet a few regular trading partners following this rule. Many times the other trader will realize you hooked them up and surprise you down the road. It's a great way to start a lasting trade partnership for certain distro that you can get easily. I've met some great traders along the way and keep in touch with them for stuff I want knowing they're good and honest traders. I'll take that over trying to hunt stuff down on the forums any day if I have the opportunity.

a lot of this is assuming he even wants the '16, which is YTBD. Still waiting to hear back. I've already sent msgs to folks to swap out my '16 for their '17 in case he doesn't want the '16.

    I would do this:

    Hey buddy,
I picked up the beer from my friend. Looks like I made an error. I thought it was a 17. Turns out it is a 16. Let me know if you still want to go through with the deal. If not I understand.
    Sorry for the mix up.
