Picked several pounds of Chinook today...Cascades tomorrow...will even have enough Sterling and Mt. Hood for a few batches of lager this Winter...Wet Hop Ale when I'm ready (I'm almost ready for boil and DH hops)

Nice! Mine (Cascades) are looking quite good at present, but I typically harvest in September. Might be earlier this year, though, as they seem further along than usual. Perhaps be due to our hotter-than-normal summer. Got my fingers crossed. Cheers!

Mine have only just started to turn from the flowery thing to cones, I expect to harvest september some time. My centennial hasn't even started to flower yet although it was a first year plant and is pretty small

I will be harvesting my hops in September.

    Cheers!

My hops are at different stages of growth. From what I can see they are mostly green still, no lightening or browning. Not exactly sure when to harvest though, but will try to get what I can out of what there is.

I watch them daily. When they feel more like paper I start picking.
Watch to bugs if ou have stopped spraying.
I do not wait till they turn brown.

Pick some at several stages and see what you like.

That is you choice. The hops will 'taste' different depending the harvest time (e.g., early harvest, late harvest).

I have only performed a late harvest based upon a recommendation I was provided by Stan Hieronymus. I have never conducted an 'experiment' of an earlier harvest so I have no specifics I can share here.

    Cheers!

With a dozen or so varieties in my backyard, I find myself harvesting continually between July and October.

I harvest in late August thru late September, but it is never the same year after year. New England growing is very different from other places in the country

Sounds like I should pick a few tomorrow then. And then the rest in a few weeks. How often do people leave them "on the vine" so to speak? The ones I would pick are about 2 weeks old the others less then a week.

Mine need to be harvested asap. I am hoping they make it til next weekend. I may harvest this weekend, vacuum pack and freeze, and brew next week. Ugh. New job, new baby, sinus surgery have eaten up all my brew time.

2 weeks old? Does that mean the cones themselves are only two weeks old? If so, that sounds way too early to pick. A good test is to pick a cone and roll it around between your thumb and forefinger. If you get a nice aroma, then you'll at least get something from them. If not, it's way too early. Also, break the cone apart to see how much of the good yellow stuff is inside. In general, the longer you wait (without them turning all brown), the more good stuff will be contained within. Like Jack, I generally harvest later than earlier. Cheers!

Pinch the cone and let go. Wet cones will make no sound and not spring back to shap. Dry cones will crackle sorta sounding like paper crinkling.

I'm just happy to see any hops at all on mine, haven't had any for 2 years after transplanting them at the new house.

Like no cones, or your rhizomes gave up the ghost and won't even send up bines?

On a sort-of-related subject, the 2017 harvest of commercial hops will happening soon. Took a look at HopsDirect to check out when that would happen and noticed that they have an AWESOME sale going on for a bunch of their 2016 stock.

Bought some Jarrylo and Ekuanot, along with a bunch of Amarillo and some Centennial.

I know some of you guys have experience with the Jarrylo, but can anyone give me an idea of what Ekuanot is like? BTW, I read the descriptions before I bought them, but I'd really appreciate your personal experiences with either of those varietals.

    Thanks!

Harvested nearly two pounds so far that I use for late and whirlpool additions. The rest of the hops seem to be about two weeks off, perfect for when I need to pick more to dry hop with.

The ones I did harvest were browning and perfectly "papery" crisp. Wonderful aroma as well, yum. That beer is currently fermenting away.
