Ok...I know something about beer and ale, but what's the big deal here? Is this something to 'bust a nut' over?
Interesting to see that Odell, which has been very traditional in the past, is moving forward. And why not? Gotta keep up, right? Isn't this a little like the new "hop hash" that's been going 'round? On the other hand there seems to be a developing undercurrent of using whole hops which brewers like Victory (and many Germans) have been doing for decades. Is it gimmick? Is it not? I don't know for sure based on the "hop hash" beers I've had but I do know that I've really enjoyed many beers done with whole hops. In any case, I'm looking forward to trying it.
The hop hash is just a resinous glob that gathers at the bottom of massive totes of hops when they get shipped. It is really more like hop kief as it is a mashed collection of the resin glands from that hop. This grinding technique seems like it would bring out more of the planty/grassy flavors in the hop cone itself as opposed to the more varied flavors that are found in the resin glands. I'd give it a try though.
Looks like it will be canned and available year round. Release date August 18th. Looking forward trying this.
Hop keif is what you describe, hop hash is cryogenically extracted just like hash. Also, hop pellets are ground hops, so my guess is it's not going to be much different that any other form of hops. If it is anything like drumroll, ipa, runoff red, and st. Lupulin then I'm sold.
As it was explained to me, the grinding releases more of that sweet, sexy yellow lupulin. And, really... how could that ever be a bad thing? YUM.

Nope Hop Hash is the residue they scrape off the Hop pelletizer... cryo hops or Lupulin powder is the cryogenically extracted product. Basically sounds like they're doing the first part of the pellitizing process in house? Might produce a slightly different product? Who knows.
Then that's opposite naming from the marijuana industry. Hash is chemically extracted from the buds, keif is thc crystals that have naturally fallen from the buds. I assumed the same applied to hops. I do know through the process of making lupulin powder another product is created, debittered hop leaf.
I agree wholeheartedly. I had this on tap yesterday afternoon. Amazing hop character from the first sip to the last. Incredibly well balanced and drinkable. It's hard to stop smelling this long enough to take a sip, and then it's hard to stop drinking it. Lovely, fantastic, awesome beer.
I have found that in the same I dont care for lupulin powder I am also not digging lupulin oil. There's just something about it that I fond a bit grating. Thought Odell did a great job with this beer but it just wasn't for me.
