Founders - New Barrel-Aged Series Release: DKML

Had one last nite-sweet and boozy-the bastard child of Colt 45 and KBS.

 

I just bought a second four pack yesterday. I'm planning on seeing how a few do with a little time on them. I'm really enjoying the sweet booze right now. But I've liked all the Barrel Aged Series so far.

 

Would marriage have made a difference? Seriously, this one sorta intrigues me but the combination seems a bit baffling. Perhaps the customers are being test subjects here to see if there is a demand for higher end malt and/or high abv beverages.

 

Looks like a lot of folks scared off by the 'malt liquor' thing...Compare todays' modern BA stouts to Guinness...it's just not the same. Give it a try if you see one the singles section!

 

Founders slogan is: "Brewed For Us". Don't like the look/sound of it, then don't buy. Don't expect a BBA Imperial Malt Liquor taste like KBS.

 

I found the beer rather smooth, and if you like bourbon, this is the beer for you. The base adds nothing to get in the way of the bourbon. For anyone who has ever had Milk Punch, the first sip reminded me of that. A creamy delivery system for bourbon . I think it would be interesting if they dropped some 40s of the base to try out. BPML would be an appropriate name, the slogan on the bottle could read "Right below where DKML aimed with a punch"

 

Just as expected, this stuff is pretty awful. Mickey's on steroids. Had to give it a try, because it's Founders.

 

Never had a malt liquor before, so no pre-conceptions. Finally bought a 4 pack and tried a bottle of DKML. Pretty smooth and enjoyable...lots of bourbon, vanilla, corn. Not bad at all. Worth the experiment.

 

The next one is IBS. Icelandic Breakfast Stout, made with rotten shark meat, whale blubber and seal milk.

 

Yes, you are correct sir. Was another way just to say I was excited for BA Sumatra, wish it was in the series this year instead of one of the others. I can say it was very good, basically what you would expect. Thought it took a little of the coffee away and was slight bourbon, adding to the base, not dominating it. I would buy quite a bit if bottled. They've had the Sumatra nitro on all over in GR this year and that is really great too.

 

Incredible as regular Sumatra is, it's hard to imaging how good BA Sumatra would be.

 

DKML is freakin awesome! if you are a bourbon nut like myself, and you like high ABV beers, this is right up your alley. As it warms more flavors of caramel, vanilla and bourbon come out.

This beer was definitely a surprise as I didn't expect it to be any good, but I had to go buy more after the 1st four pack went down in 2 days.

 

Because of the mostly positive responses I bought a single to give it another try. I do see that there's a bunch still sitting on the shelves though, in 4 packs and bombers.

 

After giving it another try - a full bottle instead of just a tasting at a store. I find it much more enjoyable then first thought. Not sure what changed, maybe my palate. I think the malt bourbon and corn flavors all blends well together. Reminds me of moonshine straight off the still with the high corn flavor.

 

I had a shot of Woodford right before drinking it, and DKML seems like a watered-down, less concentrated Bourbon.

 

That is the consensus amongst my friends too. Once it warms, almost like a bourbon (or whiskey) and water. Lots of corn and barrel.

 

Bourbon Barrel Aged pure grain alcohol, now there is an idea!
