I sometimes do. I rarely do cheap swill, but I can get a local session IPA pint can for under $2 at a gas station. I do one of those and a hot dog or 2 on occasion.

Maybe half of the beer I buy is "on the way home", so there's not much in the way of a sacrifice when I do something like that. Then again, I commute from NYC to northern NJ, so there's a lot of chances in between, especially when I drive. Lately, though, I'll grab a 4-pack or so of the latest and greatest () from within a short walk of the Bus Terminal.

But, just keeping things to waking distance of the house, there are 2 small liquor stores, 1 in either direction, that have a nice enough craft/import selection (2 to 3 fridge doors, numerous styles). One of them is better then the other, in that they are more focused on local beers, but the important thing is that 10 years ago these are exactly the sort of stores where you'd only have Sam Adams and imports like Bass or Guinness available.

    Thanks for the back story!

Drank Mickey's when I was in college in the 90's. Guess they rebranded a bit cause I just remember the bee!

Not true. The lack of a formal open container law does not mean you can consume alcoholic beverages with impunity while driving in this State. Of course you can try your luck if you like, I'm all in favor of lawyers getting paid.

Definitely in favor of lawyers getting paid.
FYI, in NJ driving with an "open container" is a fine ($200) but no loss of license.

While this is the case in the handful of other states that have no formal open container law Mississippi is the exception. My source was http://www.opencontainerlaws.com/tea21.html
From the link: "There is one state that is “out on a limb” when open alcohol container laws are concerned, Mississippi. This is the only state that allows drivers to drink alcohol and operate a motor vehicle. As long as the driver’s blood alcohol content stays below the state’s legal limit of .08%, the open alcohol container laws do not apply in Mississippi."

Now maybe that source is bad and inaccurate but from my little research I have no reason to believe so. Regardless drinking and driving isn't something I'd recommend, even in Mississippi:grin:

I didn't find a telephone number or contact information for the author(s) of the link provided and if anyone does have that please pm me so I can call them and correct their information.

I made a few phone calls to our State's Judicial Association, our local Senior Judge and our local senior prosecutor to get a take on the current status of laws and Court rulings concerning open containers and drinking while driving generally. Here's the deal.

In Mississippi all laws regarding hard liquor are made by the Legislature. However, laws regulating beer and wine are delegated to the individual Counties and Cities all of which have passed local laws prohibiting open containers of beer or wine in vehicles, whether moving or parked, by the driver or the passengers. So, while the State doesn't specifically prohibit it, in every county and city you are subject to arrest if caught doing it.

I know it's not a convenience store but it's also a hot dog shop. There is a place in the shit hole city of butler called gorillos. the quality varies but one time I got a weyerbacher finally legal and a voodoo big black voodoo daddy for 5 dollars for both of them. they used to have some beers for growler fills but I haven't checked in awhile. they usually have something good, one time they had st bernardus Christmas ale for a buck fifty a piece.

Well serious props to you for putting in the research! Learn something new everyday.
That page was also used as a source in a huffington post article which came up when googling open container laws fyi.

In the statute, sure, but in the real world I bet you'd experience a whole lot more 'inconvenience' if you were caught.

Here in Las Vegas you can find some pretty strange things! A local convenience store right around the corner from us usually has a better price on gas. When I go in I love to, oddly enough, find Rogue Sriracha Stout for only $3.99 for a bomber. This is crazy as our local Total Wine is asking $13.99 for that same bomber. I always pick one up when I see them. Sometimes two or three. The wife really likes this one and I have to say it is a very good beer at that $3.99 price point!

Coming from a more conservative State like ND, where alcohol is only sold in bars and liquor stores, and, no sales until noon on Sundays. I was aware that grocery stores and C-stores sold beer, in Az, but the growler thing was a nice surprise. Now I need to pick one up, and try some more local stuff.
I've been noticing, too, that some C-stores are better with fresh brews than others, same with variety. I'll never complain about getting some fresh Laggy's, Stone, or local brews so close to home, though. A buck or two more, sure, but, it's nice not to have to drive all the way across town to a TW, to get some decent suds.

How so? By recipe, Mickey's was no doubt pretty much a standard US malt liquor (heavy adjunct usage to boost ABV, likely corn sugar), originally brewed by a good-sized (500k bbl) regional, Sterling Brewers, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana, which was absorbed into multi-million national brewing companies - Associated (1968) and then Heileman (1972)

Not sure when Mickey's started using the hornet character, but, yeah, in the the 1980-90s, all the major malt liquors seemed to have some sort of "animal" branded - bulls, dragons, snakes, tigers, horses, etc. An easy "shorthand" way to suggest alcoholic strength when the ATF still prohibited ABV on labels, along with wording like "strong".

When it was first released in the 1960s, Mickey's used Irish imagery on its label - shamrocks on a faux coat of arms, etc. (IIRC, "Mickey" herself was supposed the name of the wife of a Sterling Brewing Co., exec.)
