From Kendall: http://www.washingtonbeerblog.com/e...r-dick-cantwell-returns-to-the-beer-business/ Could be interesting.
Cool, but it kinda sucks. I know I'll probably catch hell for this but every New Belgium beer I've ever had makes me gag a little. I don't know if it's their specific strain of yeast but they all feel over carbonated and make me feel sick. Glad to have him back in the game, just wish it was a beer I could drink.
You can continue to dislike NB beers while supporting this deal. AFAIK, there's no indication Dick Cantwell or Magnolia Brewing will begin using NB's yeast or bear any resemblance to NB beer in general. EDIT: The article mentions the possibility of NB sending beer to Magnolia for blending, but it also explicitly states the intention is not to turn the two Magnolia locations into NB brewpubs.
It says magnolia is on the verge of bankruptcy? What's the idea in buying a brand that is suffering? Just for the brewery space itself?
They had already filed bankruptcy and were bought through bankruptcy proceedings. I'm sure they got a good deal. You do have to wonder if they will change the name to start fresh. I'm sure Dick can't wait to brew his first pumpkin beer.
[QUOTE="SeaAle, post: 5590643, member: 682156". I'm sure Dick can't wait to brew his first pumpkin beer.[/QUOTE] Possibly one bearing a name that's a dig towards the Super Bowl commercial of a certain brand once based in St. Louis. Edit: Wow, my phone sucks at editing a quote.
Well, Inbev is a publicly traded company, so I'm sure those details are in the quartetly and yearly reports. Shouldn't take too much digging to come up with 'em.
I'd be real surprised if you find anything negative, I believe they're still getting a lot of investment and adding new distribution areas under ABI, so the barrelage is likely growing strong. May be a year or more before there's a way to determine if they added new long-term buyers or only captured sales briefly in the new distro by being the flavor of the month.
The only negative I've heard concerning Elysian is that the Great Pumpkin festival isn't as big of a success as it used to be.
And, seems like he's busy already: https://www.brewbound.com/news/dick-cantwell-discusses-return-brewing
a year ago i decided a career change was right for me and i took an entry-level job with Elysian (despite my hesitance about ABI). i'll happily answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. @Reidrover - in regards to how we are doing? beer sales are good. people love space dust, and i believe we are the 2nd highest selling brand in WA (IIRC deschutes #1, fremont #3). @sharpski - you're probably right, there's not much negative to say right now because we are now distributed across the country and of course barrelage is up as a result. i will say it's been interesting scaling up brews, and there's an obvious culture shift. we'll see how it all plays out over time. @distantmantra - GPBF should be a good time this year at Seattle Center. last year was torrential down pours and a new venue. i wasn't there, but from what i can gather, people who were suppose to pour beer didn't show up. this year i'll be at GPBF friday night, and fresh hop fest saturday. talk about a good weekend for WA beer
You're right. They already filed chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015, but couldn't ever dig out of their debt with the restructure and build out of the dogpatch pub. http://www.sfgate.com/food/article/San-Francisco-s-popular-Magnolia-Brewing-Co-6681641.php
Well, shit, I never thought I’d say it, but now I finally have one reason to like ABI. More seriously, congratulations on taking the plunge into the new career. I knew from our brief conversation at the end of the bottle share that you had, but this colors in the outline that you drew. I hope it continues to feel like a gratifying course correction as you inevitably work your way up the ladder.
