I will be in Budapest and Krakow at the end of August. I will have 5 days in each city.

Are there any can’t miss stops in either city? It can be for beer, food, tourist stuff, etc. Any insight into expected costs would also be appreciated.

I will be staying right downtown in both cities and have no qualms on taking public transit.

I am printing out the Beerfly recommendations to take with me, but I know that doesn’t cover everything there is to do.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A couple of years ago I had planned a trip to Budapest that ended up being canceled. I had worked on a list of possible places to visit. You can see it here -- the list was constructed in early 2015 and hasn't been updated since, so take it with a large dose of NaCl but maybe some will find it useful.

    Also a map

Visited both in fairly recent times. Budapest - Czak a Jo Sorok - good bottle shop with some taps. Legenda - strong line up and the brutal bitter was just that. Eleszto - decent courtyard complex with good Hungarian selection etc. Hopfanatic was very good but now closed. Krakow - Pracownia Piwa (these guys are brewing magicians), Multi Tap Qlti, Swiat Piwa, Wezze Crafta, Viva La Pinta, Omerta all good. Two great cities beyond the solid craft beer scenes. Enjoy.

This thread was from a few years ago, but it should still be pretty relevant. Post 24 has input from my trip in 2015. I think the owner of Csak a Jo Sor opened another place, I just can't remember what it was called.

As far as food, I enjoyed Bestia and Jonas Craft beer house had a good burger spot outside its entrance. Both had good beer. I also enjoyed a great traditional meal at Hungarikum Bisztro.

I was in Budapest for a week last July and had a great time, definitely a great time, with good food and beer. Be prepared to walk alot though, most days I walked 8-10 miles a day, with the major days being 14-15. But there was always a quick little cafe or bar I stopped into whenever I was out. As for bottle shops, I hit up Beer 2 Go several times, as my place I was staying at was just down the block, Budapest, Ráday u. 7, 1092 Hungary is the address.

As for Krakow, it has been several years, so I cannot give you much of any help on this, other than I remember buying a lot of beers and booze at a Tesco, but this was also before I was huge into the craft beer market.

Hope this helps. Also, If you are in Budapest over a Sunday, make sure you find a nice bistro or cafe for brunch, it will definitely be worth your time.

    Cheers!

Thanks everyone! One of the many reasons I love this site is the great people who will help you out!

No problem on the walking part, last year in Brussels & Amsterdam, we averaged 7 to 10 miles a day. Burns off a few of the beer calories...

Just having the opportunity to visit some different, more out-of-the-way spots in Europe (with a lot of history) would be exciting for me. Have fun -- report back.

Csak a Jo Sörök shop/bar was a decent place, and Jonas Kezmüves Sörhaz, a bar at the bank of the Danube with a lot of local craft brews, was heavenly. They're still there, I suppose....
As for Krakow, I've never been there.

Yup, they're still there. Jónás will organize De Molen tap takeover on Friday, you can check the event on FB.
Csak a jó Sör is still the best beer bar in Budapest.

Budapest - check out the Great Market Hall. Also the Ruin pubs, I liked Szimpla Kert the best. Don't know much about the beer there, but I had plenty of pálinka. Especially Rezangyal pálinka

if you ever wanted to visit Budapest again I give you homemade palinka, believe me, that is much better than the one you can have in pubs.

I had a great time in each city. Besides the historical sites and great food & wine, both have an evolving beer scene.

In Budapest we really enjoyed the ruin bars. Also all had live music and all had at least a couple of local IPAs. One thing I really enjoyed was they were serving unfiltered lagers (both PU and local versions). Beers, food & wine are a great value with tap beer often being a cheaper option that a bottle of water.

The local IPA we ran into most often was Soprini and it had a nice bit of haze but was not a NE style. We also had some great local fruit beers by Favgo We tried a plum and a cherry.

The craft beers were fun and I will do reviews in the BA data base in the near future.

As an aside, I see a lot of live music. I saw what was probably the best open mic night I have ever seen at the Farragut bar. A really stunning group of musicians from Hungary, Italy, USA, and the UK.

Krakow is a fantastic city with a great beer hall tradition. In addition to the beer halls we hit several breweries and beer bars. Prices were really cheap as well. Note that if your a student, many of the bars will give you a discount.

The highlight (among many) was the Wezze Krafta. It is a brewery in an old tobacco warehouse complex. They moved in about two years and were quickly followed by bars, restaurants, etc. Incredible reuse of a several block sized industrial space. Also fun were the Multi tap craft beer bar (second story spot and one more floor up is the Gaming society for board games!

CK Brower was a solid cellar brewery. During happy hour it is taken over by students who drink beers out of large towers that are place on their tables.

Also great was Pod Wawelem which reminded me of a German beer hall in all the best ways .

I will try and figure out how to post some photos. Thanks for all the suggestions & the pub map was a huge help!

I'll be in Budapest in mid April for 3 nights after working in Bahrain and after some research have come up with the following places to visit. Any must-do's or can skip's?

Beer/Bars (any worthy of eating at too?):
Krak'n Town (staying a couple blocks away)
    Szimpla Kert
    Neked Csak Dezső!
My Little Melbourne Coffee and Brew Bar
Big Face Sörfőzde (brewery open to visit?)
    One Beer Brewery
    Jónás Craft Beer House
    BEER TO GO
    Bors Gastro Bar
    Csakajósör Kft.
    Hops Beer Bar
Monyo\Legend Breweries are a bit out of the city. Easy to get to? Probably won't have data on my phone.

    Food:
    Mazel Tov
    New York Cafe
    Belvárosi Disznótoros
    Zeller Bistro (dinner)
    Regős Vendéglő (lunch)

    Touristy:
    WestEnd City Center
    360 bar
    Thermal baths
    Andrássy út

Any recommendations on the best place to take nighttime time-lapse photos of:
    Széchenyi Chain Bridge
    Hungarian Parliament Building

    Thanks!

Edit: I'm aiming to visit Poland sometime later this spring as well.

Similar to the above post, I'll be in Budapest for 3 days at the start of May - any new recommendations other than what is covered in this thread? I'm a professional brewer in California, so if there are any brewers meetups/tap take-overs around that time, it's be great to meet up with some locals/tourists.
