No doubt. I liked the Surlyfest, but it is not a Marzen.

    L- Dark, very dark.

S- I could smell chocolate off the top.

T- Chocolate over anything else. Not a huge stout fan, but this one really hits the spot.

F- Thick taste. Tiny spice at the start, but very light.

O- Very nice beer. Nothing crazy special, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Calling Surlyfest a Marzen is like DFH relabeling Indian Brown (most definitely a brown ale) as a "dark IPA."

    That's a traveshamockery, IMHO.

If anyone wants to steal my idea for Surly Pentagram, feel free. I'll be damned (See what I did there?) if I'll pay $23.99 for a 6.66% beer.

Good evening, all, and Happy New AAL Sunday! Leinie Original, in mid-century vintage Blatz glassware. This isn't too bad. There is enough complexity to the flavor profile to make it interesting. What drew me to this, however, was the classically beautiful label. That really made it stand out on the singles shelf. Character and drinkability. What could possibly go wrong? :stuck_out_tongue:

    Grassroots Arctic Saison

This is a collaboration between Hill Farmstead and Anchorage... brewed at Anchorage.

I actually tried this once before - I had a few sips at a big tasting. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time I'm really having it.

6%. Fermented in oak tanks with Brett. Bottled Oct '16

I liked this one better as it warmed and the carbonation got softer. Pale and murky. Little bit of lemon. Little bit of fruit from the Brett. Doughy. Herbal finish. Very dry. Pretty good.

    Well Hello Late Night NBS!!!
Thanks to @cjgiant for the thoughtful start. Has me reflecting on the MANY years of NBS.
I'm busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest. However, I found time for a new beer. One must keep their priorities straight. As a Bruery fanboy I was excited for their foray (finally) into IPA's and DIPS's via their new vehicle, Offshoot Beer Co. Sadly, I have not fallen in love with a single release thus far. I was somewhat fond of Line Cutter, but nothing else has really been a hit for me. I am hoping today will be different with Pleasant Town.
Now there is a backstory on this one. It was supposed to be released a few weeks ago. Something was "off" with it. So they tried a Mulligan. And, I'm hoping with Centennial and El Dorado hops in the mix with Citra, this will be right up my alley.

    Poured from 16oz can.
Golden to straw in color and very clear. Frothy white head rises an inch and a half high then recedes to a consistent, smooth layer of tightly packed bubbles. Aroma is blend of gentle citrus notes that are quickly overtaken by earthy pine resin. There's also a subtle yeast sediment hint I pick up.
Taste begins with a pillowy orange blossom note, then goes toward a mix of pine and maybe sage. But I'm talking Great Basin sage, like white sage. Overall, these flavors give it a general "earthiness."
Mouthfeel is spot on for an IPA and carbonation plays a consistent part.
Overall, when I read the hop profile I got a little more excited with Centennial and El Dorado in the mix. However, I found this one to be a tad muted. A decent, refreshing IPA but not outstanding.

I'm trying to find my notes from this one. But if memory serves me correctly, I wish I found the chocolate that seems to abound in your bottle. And as for coffee and chiles, there was....some. I wasn't singing its praises.

    Plan Bee Brush Hog

OK, on to number 2 of the "fermented in oak" saisons. Rather than coming from Alaska, this one is hyperlocal.

I like the name Brush Hog. I imagine brewer Evan Watson coming up with that as he struggled against the weeds on his farm.

This coolship beer is supposedly 100% "local" (hops, barley, wheat, oats). Knowing the brewer's methods, the yeast is probably from their farm.

This one has a full on "block out the light" NEIPA look. I wouldn't call it a gusher, but the beer foam really wanted to escape the bottle.

Woah. Odor is like sour body odor. Tasting it - this one is strong with toe jam and/or cheese. There's a tartness underneath the earthiness.

Characterful, but at the expense of drinkability. Nice initially, but doesn't lend itself to volume drinking.

Hola, Amigas and amigos! I thank all of you for the support. As expected, when I was released from duties, I dove straight into beer, not caring a whit if it were new or not (spoiler, it was all Cedar Dust, until my buddy Megan gave me a lift, and then I bought a sixer of Ninkasi Pacific Rain, which is new to me, thus eligible. Sue me), and I continue to enjoy things. Again, my gratitude goes to all of you.

    At work now.

Had a couple beers at Iron Goat this afternoon on my way home from grocery shopping.

This is a blood orange IPL. It was a recipe that won a competition held by a local homebrewing group. The winner got to have their beer brewed on IG's system and sold to the public.

It's not bad, quite drinkable, really, but I didn't get much of the blood orange.

Goat In A Boat IPA, a collaborative beer brewed with Boundary Bay, is at the other end of the spectrum. It's an IPA brewed with Passion Fruit.

Huge amount of tropical fruit flavor, almost obscuring the fact that it's an IPA until the finish.
