Visited yesterday--awesome addition to the local beer scene.

The head Brewer, Buckman, is passionate about his craft and generous in discussing the beers with people. Draft Dodger was a delicious sour ale, and obesity epidemic was on point for a Belgian stout--the yeast imparted a fruity quality that balanced the chocolate/roasted malt notes.

The space has a good vibe, with plenty of jenga and cards against humanity to go around. I also hear a food program is in the works (for now they plan to have food trucks rotating through).

Stopped over there today. Pretty solid beers, will definitely be back. The brewer definitely has experience and will be nice to see what he can do. Definitely worth checking it out

    Based on this article,
"The head brewer is Ethan Buckman, who at just 24 has already build an impressive resume: Church Brew Works and Hofbräuhaus in Pittsburgh, Mustang in Oklahoma and, locally, Free Will."

Semi surprised there's been little mention of Stickman on BA.

My brother lives not too far from them, so I get a fairly regular sampling of their canned releases. I have to say, I always seem to enjoy their offerings.

Some cans I really enjoyed the past few months.. Rate this poorly on the internet, Store bought is fine, Home made is best, Deja vou all over again, and Send in the clowns.

    Anyone else dig Stickman?

We talk about Stickman a little bit in the SEPA news releases etc. thread, this thread sort of just died.

I'm a huge fan of theirs. I live close by also and drop by a lot to try mostly their IPAs. I have not tried one yet that I didnt' like and I've had a bunch. I have just recently just starting grabbing some cans of the cans too which are very good. I currently have at home some Store Bought from last week and it's really good.

I've said before many times, Stickman is the best brewery in the area no one ever talks about.

Yeah check out the SEPA thread, I've posted about a few of their beers before.

I've a fan of their dark beers. They've brewed some good dark Belgian ale, porter, stout, schwarzbier, old ale, etc.

Thank you both for the SEPA tip. Didn't mean to necro a thread. But was wondering why I'd never noticed anyone mention them. Glad to hear they do indeed get some love around here. They deserve it, great beer.

I love Plant Matter, the dry hopped tripel but haven't been to the brewery since they started canning. Is their plan of having lots of cans available all the time working out so far?

I've got to go back and get some cans of Plant Matter if it's still around.

I think it's working fine for them. They keep the fridge stocked with lots of varieties, but some of their stuff does sell out quickly, like their new IPAs. Their social media spins their can availability as the 180 degree of Tired Hands....without mentioning TH.

They take a lot of shots at Tired Hands on their social media for some reason....

You just mean the anti-hype comments?

I'd say there are more potential customers that are not willing to stand in line for beer, than people that are.

Been eyeing that Send in the Clowns. Was there a couple of weeks ago and I need to go back with a group and actually spend some time with their stuff. Left with a bourbon barrel imperial stout and a wine barrel saison that was great.

I'll jump on the Plant Matter is great train. It's an excellent, hop-forward, boundary-pushing take on a Tripel. Still have one in the fridge.

I've only had a couple other brews from them, and they were both pretty solid as well.

They made some comments about hype, posted about fresh beer (one of the brewers called it bullshit I think), names of beers referencing Tired Hands beers. It just seems unwise to try to pick a fight with another local brewery for no real reason. But it is there business and can do what they want.

Would prefer if they focused on their beers and less on talking crap. Same can be said for Tired Hands as well, that they need to focus on consistency, but overall make a far superior product.

I think their aggression towards Tired Hands (that's what is looks like) is excessive too. Stickman makes a beer called Smoothie Gimmick Beer that's obviously the TH Milkshake style but it's not as good (In my opinion). They'd probably say it's just a joke or something but it's silly to call out another beer and then not even make it to the same quality.

I'm glad somebody is poking fun at TH but it doesn't need to be in a mean spirited way.

I definitely agree with this, love that there is another brewery not far from where I work that I can run over and grab something to go on the way home but I have yet to have had anything close to Tired Hands caliber beer. Don't get me wrong they have some solid offerings and overall have quality brewing practices but still a notch below Tired Hands and another in the area that shall remain hidden.

Hey Guys! Owner/ Head Brewer of Stickman here. First of all, wanted to say I'm more then flattered by the general comments, I'm really glad everyone's generally enjoying our beer. I'm even happy to take the "one tier below" tired hands and hidden river comments. Being considered second to the two most popular breweries in such a crazy crowded market is a place I'm happy to be in.

I wanted to address this appearance of hostility, since you guys are not the first to feel this way (which means we may need to work on our social media clarity here). Our whole schtick is to make fun of everybody a little bit. We do it to ourselves with beer names like Shameless pandering and are we cool yet, we do it about the approval process with beer names like gubbment meddlin, we do it with inside jokes about staff members (sensible portions and best practices were light hearted jabs at our bartenders, cousin stoopid is making fun of my business partner) and we even do it to our customers (anybody try hipster nonsense last year?)

When we name beers things like Smoothie gimmick beer, we're making fun of a trend, not a particular brewery. Tired Hands certainly popularized the style, but they didn't invent it (that was omnipolo), and they're not the only guys who make it either (Imprint, levante, sole, pizza boy, hidden river, hollow earth, and of course Stickman from time to time). It was almost instantly apparent that after we released Smoothie Gimmick beer we both missed customer expectations (a fruited hoppy farmhouse was not what a lot of people were looking for) and also drew too many associations to one brewery in particular. We are certainly looking to poke a little fun at the beer market in general (including ourselves), but we are certainly not looking to single anyone out in such an excessive way. That's why we won't make that beer anymore, and our second attempt at a beer in that vein was renamed entirely.

Similarly, making fun of things like lining up for can releases, hazy IPA fixation, or any of the other trends in the current beer market are not things that are unique to any particular brewery.

As far as the "fresh beer is bullshit" comment above, I'm not really too sure where that came from, as we also endeavor to offer the freshest possible product both in cans and on tap. It certainly didn't come from any official Stickman source.
