Hungry Eyes Batch 26 IPA | Dewey Beer Co.

Dewey Beer Co. - Hungy Eyes IPA Batch 26
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    --------------------------

Poured from the tapped crowler into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Turbid slightly like appearance, opaque but with a good lemon glow and touches of orange hue. Creamy white top, two fingers, making a slightly bowled puck and crown. Not bad, if slightly lifeless.

Aroma hits a hop crunch blast. Citrus notes of lemon and orange, with large amounts of pine and spicy herbs. Malt presence just flat out takes a bake seat from the hops, that bounce all over. New age, pine classic, to spice and then tropical citrus. Great blasting nose that doesn't go overboard.

Creamy but subdued mouthfeel, but with a more impressive blast of hops that also makes sure to add the classic bitterness. Clean and fruity mixes of pithy grapefruit, a touch of pineapple, but lots of pine and minty blasting hops. Finishes with pine air freshner blasting feeling, and clean mint chewy character. Good mixing malt sweetness to bring a touch of balance.

Classic NE IPA quality, but stays away from box juice sweetness. Very nicely done and impressed. New age hopheads will be very happy.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 | BA Generated Score: 4.27

    Cheers!

Happy Labor Day weekend, NBS imbibers and commentators! After about 36 hours of fairly miserable weather, things have improved significantly here in North Jersey. I'm now happy that we drove up from the Shore yesterday rather than this afternoon. It's made for a more relaxing Sunday. Thank you to @lordofthewiens for a typically thoughtful introduction.

My new beer today is a BBA Ginger Barleywine brewed by Starpoint Brewing in Carrboro, NC. I picked this up last weekend while visiting our son and daughter. Starpoint is a very fine brewer. I've particularly enjoyed their high gravity, high ABV stouts so I was anxious to try this American Barleywine. Despite the butterscotch on the nose, there is little sweetness. The ginger adds a unique to touch to the bourbon. It also seems to drink higher than its 10.5% ABV so I have to be careful if I want to spend much time at the Virtual Bar at WBAYDN this afternoon. Overall, it's unique and thoroughly enjoyable. Here's my review:

    4.33/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Undated bottle. Poured into tulip glass. It pours a medium brown with orange hues, and a half finger of light khaki-colored head and lacing with very good retention. It somewhat resembles apple cider. The nose is unique insofar as it combines the typical butterscotch and caramel of a Barleywine with the fresh scent of ginger. However, as the glass warms, you really begin to smell the bourbon. The taste features the same combination. The first thing I taste is the ginger which has a distinct bitter taste. That's followed by a heavy dose of bourbon and, to a lesser degree caramel and butterscotch. The flavors blend very nicely but it's by no means a sweet Barleywine. This ale is surprisingly thin in its mouth feel, with only moderate carbonation. It isn't very creamy. The 10.5% ABV is noticeable and warming. It's decidedly a sipper. Overall, while I generally prefer English Barleywines to their American cousins, the ginger makes this offering unique. Starpoint brews some very fine ales and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to enjoy this one.

I hope you're all enjoying the holiday weekend and your new beers!

It's a great Braggot. Glad you enjoyed it! Those of us in the Garden State do get tired of the question, "what exit are you?" but it's a good way to distinguish the beers, I guess.

I had this on tap yesterday, and noticed the alcohol heat more than I recalled from my first bottle. Of course, I was drinking it next to a regular WWS, so who knows. I got more or less the same flavors you note - with just a hint of licorice that I thought came on with the noticed heat.

Happy Labor Day y'all! Me and Mrs Strohme2 are having her parents/bro and his wife over for some bbq, beers and backyard games. I just let my father in law win at cornbole....so I could come for some NBS action. I made time for a new beer earlier today.

Picked this up from our Toledo Zoo/Beer Run kids/dad trip. It's dated at about the threshold of pales and IPAs (May) that I like to buy so it made me a bit worried.

Pours a dull golden with peach flesh highlights. Minimal head. Smell of citrus, pith and grains. Taste is similar. Some citrus (lemon and orange), floral notes, some biscuity notes. Drinkability is high. Overall, it's a solid choice. Bonus points, the can design is really cool.

WOW this is great. It's the perfect marriage between a west coast bitter homb bomb and a juicy New England style IPA.

    Amazing brew!

A day of running around town today and spending money!:money_mouth: I needed some new running shoes as I'm starting to notice them flattening out. I like to gradually break in a new pair as I run the final miles in the old ones. I ran a quality 5k yesterday that netted a win in my age group and more points in our region season series in NW Indiana. The weather this weekend has been phenomenal and Mother Nature was even kind enough to provide us some much needed precipitation last night while we slept. Time to downshift and relax with a new beer!

I'm going to join @lordofthewiens today with a Oak Aged Vanilla World Wide Stout I scored at my local store on Friday. This 12oz. bottle is dated 07/26/17 and I poured it in a Dogfish Head snifter for the occasion.

Pours a medium thick looking dark brown producing a few centimeters of tan foam that won't go way. I've never seen a high abv. stout hold a head so long. Some oily residue coats the glass. The smell is dark roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and faint oak. Taste is also dark roasted malt forward followed by bakers chocolate, vanilla, marshmallow and finally some oak in the finish. The feel is on the thin side, but oily and creamy masking the significant 18% abv. in this beer.

A well crafted giant of a stout that is sneaky smooth drinking for the abv. The complementary mix of dark roast and sweetness that isn't cloying, along with a creamy smooth feel makes for a memorable experience that proves every stout doesn't need a bourbon barrel to be deemed worthy. I really enjoyed it and wouldn't mind buying another four pack to get me through the winter. My score is 4.44 / rDev+3.7%.

I'm off to light the grill soon for dinner. I have one more I'm hoping to be back with later. Enjoy the remainder of this holiday weekend and your new beer adventures today. Last but not least is the official scorecard.....

    New Cellar is Empty Sunday

Enjoying a beautiful (anyone else that says b-e-a utiful in their head anytime you type or write that thanks to Jim Carey?) evening on the deck while apple and cherry wood smoke passes by my pork loin and my nose.
Today's new brew is another great blended barrel offering from Athens that I could use another bottle or 9 of.

    A 2017 375ml bottle

It pours a fairly thin looking murky to muddy chestnut brown color. Very minimal light beige head that evaporated almost immediately.

It smells phenomenal. Lots of caramel, toffee and molasses, some toasted coconut, dates/figs, vanilla, bourbon, and some tannins/leather and oak.

The initial flavor is bourbon with a touch of alcohol and citrus hop bite followed by sour dates and raisin. The sweet carmalized sugars and honey like malts along with a rich molasses and oak flavor take over and settle in. Predominantly sweet, and leans towards a Quad quite a bit. It closes out with some bitterness and an almost orange taste. There is much more of a citrusy and floral hop profile than I would have guessed. Still squarely on the English side of the barelywine spectrum, but a very noticeable bitterness and resin finish.

The body seems just a hair thin, but the carbonation is flatter than the body is thinner. Exceptionaly smooth overall with a bit of oily resin in the end.

Another excellent blending experiment. It definitely has a lot Skipping Stone like flavor imaprted on it along with what I would guess is Matriarch DIPA for the hop character.

I can certainly see where you were getting licorice with the heat. I wonder if the forewarning about the heat had me bracing for there to be more so I was a little surprised at how subdued it seemed. I can see why they are advertising it to be cellared for sure.

Quit stealing from my reviews or taunts of @SomethingClever - I forget where I made this claim. But I do remember having it, enjoying it, and thinking much the same as you. I didn't get much coconut, but the leathery aspect was noted as well.

I didn't realize that, but trust me, I am still taunting him. Just got done texting him about it. He loved the beer at the brewery, but now thinks its average. I told him to make up his mind. He is basically a woman in a mans body.
