I think you have to pick them as your own favorites. I like Augustiner and Schottenhamel myself, but that's sentimental. Start your own traditions -- and definitely report back!

Yeah, you can't go wrong really. Just see where you can fit in and go with it!

All depends on what you're looking for. Party in Hippodrome but it's small, lots of foreigners in Hofbrau, Schützen is a good mix of everything, Käfer is very much the Munich "in crowd" tent and will have more Germans in it, the rest are fairly interchangeable.

I like Ocshenbraterei for the food, if that's not your thing a half a chicken and a pretzel (with Obatzda) as big as your head is the way to go.

    Hi Andrew,

I understand your troubles. I also contacted many tentowners a few weeks back hoping it's not too late for a reservation for the oktoberfest 2017. Unfortunately neither of them was taking on more reservations. If you need more infos about alternative ways to book a table you could check out this site for table reservation options.

It seems like it is still possible to make reservations in their shop. It also offers an option to select tents and location of the table. Quite a nice feature.

    Hope I could help!
    Cheers
    Mike!

Sad to see those traditional spots changing.

Basically the Ochsenbraterei is still with Spaten/Franziskaner, they are just getting a brand new tent with a new look/concept but keeping the Ox part. The front facade was done in the 80's and it's getting new optics along with new logistics in regards to the kitchen and toilets.

We had a group of 4 last year. We went on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the fest. We walked into the gates when then opened both days.

Tuesday we went to Hacker Pschorr and stayed all day. We walked right in, asked for the open section, and left at maybe 8 or 9pm. It's a lot of fun to see how the energy, number of people, and everything builds through the day.

Wednesday we started at Paulaner, again, walked right in, then moved on to Lowenbrau, and then Augstiner. No problems walking right in. Not until about 6-7pm, did we try to go to Hoffbrau Munich, and couldn't get a seat.

It was so much fun and exceeded every expectation I could have had. IMO, it's a must do for any beer nerd.

Unsure where's best to post this but we'll be in Munich soon for the festival and I'm trying to figure out some cool things to do away from the Theresienwiese. I've read about this 9 pin bowling, Kegeln? Know any cool places where we could give this a try with a beer of course
    Any other recommendations?

If you want a near identical experience without the mega crowd, try the local Volkfests. A few weekends ago was in Erding (2 tents) and the next weekend in Freising. Good bands and plenty of bench dancing, dirndls....

I'm about to start looking for our annual trip to a beer festival. The last 2 years we've done Erlangen which has been brilliant and previously we've enjoyed Oktoberfest and Straubings equivalent.

Anyone have any tips or advice of a cracker of a festival to visit in 2018 please???? The

    Looks fabulous!

How many people attend? What was price of a beer in general?

There's one in Nurnberg the day I arrive but it's supposed to rain. However, I'll be in München a few days later and the weather is currently listed as sunny! That will allow me to experience the other stuff on the Theresienwiese as @BayernTrips has suggested.

We arrive in Munich Sunday morning with plans to attend Monday afternoon. A small group of four. With all rhe online research I've done, I'm feeling very confident we'll get seats mid-afternoon so we can hang in for the "real" action at night. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

I couldn't tell you how many people where there. It wasn't too crowded although it was getting more crowded as the day went on.

IIRC, beers were about 3.5€ for a 1/2 liter.

What time of year do you go, or will the festival(s) determine that for you?
