Following up on @EdwardAbbey's salute to Holy Mountain's admirable charitable work, I thought I'd draw your attention to what Bale Breaker is doing. Together with three other breweries, the Bale Breaker owners are highlighting the importance of the folks who pick all the hops that we love so much, most of whom are Mexican migrant workers. These four breweries have collaborated on a series of beers, each brewery doing a different beer, but in partnership with the other brewers. The series is called Sesiones del Migrante, with each brewery's beer having a different name.

Bale Breaker tells the story here: https://www.balebreaker.com/migrantsessions/#

Bale Breaker's beer is a Mango IPA, and it's outstanding. It's got the right amount of mango taste, and it's also got a good solid bitterness (hey, Bale Breaker knows their IPAs). It's hazy, if you care about that. I had it on tap today at The Beer Junction. It's also available in cans around town.

The charitable cause: a portion of the proceeds go to a Yakima Valley non profit that runs educational programs that benefit Latino families in the Valley.

So, it's easy to support this cause. You don't have to go much out of your way. Just look for the beer at your local outlet. Buy the beer. Enjoy. Easy.

I saw this at the grocery store today and passed on it. Thanks for the backstory - I'll definitely pick up a six pack next time I see it!

Haven't seen it in stores yet but this beer has been on my radar for a while now. Love Bale Breaker and anything to do with a good cause.

I did my practicum years ago in Yakima and worked a lot with Latino youth, nice to see them giving back.

With @VashonGuy's blessing, perhaps this thread could become a place to record all the socially conscious and charitable acts we witness from businesses in the industry. They're legion, but the publicity they generally receive, here or elsewhere, fails to do them justice.

Here are a few, off the top of my sleepy head, to kick us off:

1.) Chuck's is currently auctioning off gems from their cellar like nobody's business for Hurricane Harvey relief. And they've done stuff like this before.
2.) Reuben's long ago instituted a Thank You Thursday program to support local non-profit organizations.
3.) Fremont's entire business model and mission seem dedicated to the proposition that beer can play some part, however small, in making the world a slightly better place.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Let's hear more. If you've ever seen something good, say something good.

The Growler Guys SE Portland location held an event last night called "Give to the Gorge," which was a fundraiser for victims of the ongoing Eagle Creek fire. Proceeds from the event will go directly to Friends of the Columbia Gorge, who are accepting donations for Hood River County Search & Rescue.

@EdwardAbbey, you have my blessing. And as it happens, the title of the thread, "Another Good Cause ..." works well as a header for whatever folks want to add.

But I am amused at the idea that you should ask the OP's approval to alter the direction of a thread. Whatever would happen to the NW Forum if we all tried to confine ourselves to comments that narrowly fit the original post? We'd lose a lot!

You’re right to be amused. I hardly know what got into me! Perhaps this uncharacteristically considerate and deferential impulse was the result of some subliminal effect endemic to this particular thread and its special topic??? Whatever the case, I hope its influence is ephemeral, for a certain amount of organic thread-drift is indeed part and parcel of this community.

I thank you for the official permission you have granted, and would like to make immediate use of it by announcing that Georgetown is currently brewing up a batch of a new beer, for which all of the proceeds will be donated to relief efforts down in Texas. It is aptly named—Houston IPA—and will be available at some point in the coming week.

Thank goodness for the charitable component, because I really wasn’t sure how anyone was going to want to choke down a new Georgetown IPA.

Well, up here at least, most of, if not all, the breweries are regularly giving back to community. North Fork has a long-standing relationship with the Humane Society; Wander lets a different employee choose the cause of their choice, and one day a month, a percentage of proceeds go to cause; Chuckanut held a very large silent auction/fund-raiser for the deadly Oso landslide a few years ago; last Sunday, Aslan released a limited batch IPA, and had an event, to support Planned Parenthood; Boundary Bay donates the use of their beer garden for various fund-raisers all summer long. I'm sure the other breweries do many things I'm unaware of.

All this in addition to countless donations of beer and swag for various things. A lot of beer for fests are also donated. They also donate employee time for things like trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and other like things. One of my favorites is Out of The Ashes, a music program for developmentally disabled youth and young adults. The sheer joy on their faces as they play on the stage in BB's beer garden every Tuesday during the summer is a thing that even puts a smile my curmudgeonly face.

First, I love basketball, and to me, that means team, unselfish basketball, up-and-down the floor basketball. And the Auerbach Russell Celtics were the earliest and maybe still the best exponent of that kind of basketball. With the 86 Celtics, the early 70s Knicks, and today's Warriors in the conversation as well.

Also I lived in Boston for seven years in the late 60s/early 70s and got to watch Russell quite a bit, and even have met him a couple of times. My two daughters both know that if either had been a boy, he would have been named "Russell."

Still a Celtics fan today, although as an old Seattle guy, I mourn the theft of the Sonics.

This made me smile. Not sure which part, the possibility that you could have had a Russell (Russellita just doesn't work) or you gave a little love to the 86 C's. You ever in the TC, give me a buzz. Would love to hear some stories

This is fantastic, I still remember watching Larry Bird and the Celtics for the first time in the '84 playoffs and have been a diehard fan ever since. Already have Mar. 23 circled on the calendar when they visit Portland, Celtics game plus beer in Portland, doesn't get much better than that!

So, having met @VashonGuy & Mrs. Vashon, for a couple quick beers a few weeks ago, I can personally guarantee that you will enjoy the chance to chat. Our time was too short. I look forward to hoisting with them again.

Grabbed a six pack yesterday, reminds me of Field 41 with some mango. That's a good thing.

Not only has Great Notion finally figured out that they don't need to hype their beer releases any longer, but those release announcements on their FB page have been replaced with promotions for their Community Support Nights:

"The first Tuesday of every month we donate a percentage of proceeds to a non-profit that we are passionate about."

    Community Support Night - Vibe

This is a welcome development @paulypringles ... I look forward to seeing more of this kind of thing from you all.

The crowler releases have really become pretty random at this point. I stopped by the brewpub around 4:00 on Sunday, and much to my surprise, saw they had crowlers of juice box on sale (one per customer). I even saw the bartender filling a few when he had a spare moment (something I haven't seen in months - for the beer releases, I think the crowlers are always pre-filled). Just out of curiosity, I asked about getting a crowler fill of one of their other beers on the taplist, but was told that they were only doing the juice box today.

This is the kind of cool shit that happens when breweries realize they don't need to hype up their beers. Just relax, keep making great beer, and continue organizing events that benefit the local community.

Georgetown is releasing a new IPA, Houston, with a proceeds going to support recovery efforts after Harvey. Cut n Paste from FB: After Hurricane Harvey hit, we wanted to help, so we did the thing we do best - we brewed a beer! 100% of proceeds from sales of Houston IPA will be donated to Greater Houston Community Foundation. The beer is only available in growlers here at the brewery, and it's a limited 15bbl batch, so get it while you can!

I stopped by Stoup a couple of weeks ago, a portion of the proceeds from their Pressure Drop IPA also going to Harvey relief, I believe. Maybe Irma as well.
