Excellent question. None of those things count as ingredients.

Are those styles out as base styles too? For instance if I make a 29A fruit beer, does it matter if my base is saison?

They are out as base styles. Too easy.

One more question... Can we "toast" a malt in the list? Or would that be considered a new ingredient?

Process any ingredient any way you'd like.

ETA: But don't omit a required process. e.g. if you use Toasted Oatmeal from the list, it needs to be legitimately toasted. Same idea for Invert Sugar #2...just using the raw sugar is no good.

Thought I'd better clarify here... process with heat, water, air, etc... but don't "process" an allowed ingredient with an added ingredient, unless that added ingredient is the one (total) added ingredient allowed.

Anticipating the next question...if you add smoke, that would count as the one added ingredient.

    Couple of reminders:

    - Still could use a couple of BJCP judges

    - If you're planning to enter, send me a private message for the address to send your entries to. In fact, even if you already know my address, let me know that you'll be entering so I can get an idea of how many entries to expect.

    Thanks!

Hmmm. I'm going to say Briess Wheat DME would be legal, because it contains two ingredients, both of which are on the consolidated ingredients list. Any other Wheat DME...let me know what kind, and I'll figure it out (or even better, point me to its specs).

What size bottles do you want. I'll enter a recipe if it comes out ok.

    12 oz would be ideal.

Why do you need two bottles for a BOS format? I'm okay if you and the judges plan of getting snockered after the comp, but pouring the second bottle down the drain is alcohol abuse.

Two reasons. Since I am not judging, I get to keep a bottle of each to sample later. Also, if one breaks in shipping, there's a backup.

Pouring some of them down the drain could be drain abuse.

Just putting this out there, because I was asked in a PM...
Maillard Malts Munich LME would also be legal, without counting as the optional additional ingredient.

Figured I'd bump this since some folks don't visit the site too frequently and may have missed this thread.

Just a reminder (and an incidental bump) that this event is still on, with entries due 30 November. So far I think we have 5 folks that have told me (via PM) they are submitting something, and one "maybe."

Don't forget: If you want the address, PM.

I thought about bottling my beers and driving them to you as I drove through PA last week. But it felt a little early to bottle + I didn't get my act together. PM on the way.
