Cow and Quince, Glarner Stube, and Sugar River Pizza (in that order) are my personal recommendations.

Yelp rates a place called Kristi's quite highly as well, but I haven't been, so I can't speak to it myself.

And Puempels is a historic bar that's a must stop for a beer and maybe a brat. Sportsman's is a great dive bar. Tofflers has a nice beer garden. New Glarus Hotel (not actually a hotel) is a cool place that has a Swiss buffet on Saturday nights, fish fry Friday and always live music. But Glarner Stube and Cow & Quince are tough to beat for food.

I think NG normally has pizza on R&D release days on site. That isn't a normal thing or a full menu of options.

Well thanks for that rant, but again, I'm just pointing out that you're nitpicking this over a handful of minutes you could "potentially" save. I find it a bit amusing that your day could be broken over the matter of an hour or less. Traffic variance in itself can set you back that much, so are you going to whine about that if it "wrecks" your day? No offense, but if you can't squeeze in an hour to eat on a day trip, you need to learn how to plan better. You're the one making a big deal out of NG not having an on-site food option, so don't deflect this back on us...

No need to dwell on this pointless topic anymore...

Where's the double secret bottle share tomorrow? I'm in.

Says the guy who decides to continue on further berating me for my, to paraphrase, "whining, and poor planning," lmfao. I apologize that my original suggestion offends you to such a degree that you feel the need to put this much time and energy into pushing against it.

Considering your intentionally antagonist and insulting approach, I'll take your "no offense" line with just a minor grain of salt.

We stopped at Three Floyds at open to pick up some brews from the kiosk, and as such wrestled with Chicago traffic on the way to Wisconsin. We then hung out at New Glarus for a couple hours--here, we could have either cut this short, not got anything to drink and as such not even gone out to the beer garden and simply gotten a few beers to go. Or, we could have skipped out on our plans for an hour at Funk Factory. Or, we could have skipped out on our plans to enjoy rare taps at Courtyard and Cellar. Or we could have skipped out on our plans for the bottle share at our hotel.

Considering you continue paring back the amount of time it would have taken us to go into town and sit down to a meal, you're continuing to be disingenuous regarding how much time that would actually take. I had no interest in going into town (by the way, which business is it that you own, so I know which to avoid?). If I had, it would not be for fast food, but something local and worthwhile. As you can see, we made very detailed plans ahead of us and we actually successfully attended them all. So if you think that's poor planning, or if my disinterest in eating in town last month is still affecting your state of mind that much, have yourself a  and bless your worried heart.

None of this changes the fact that a lot of people that come to New Glarus--damn near every single person that I saw during my time there--come for the first time and don't realize there's no food. It's a minor thing, and could be fixed at the very least with a note on their website, or even some hot pretzels and brats...excepting folks such as yourself who get up in arms at the mere suggestion of change. They even seem to have plenty of room for this to be indoors-only, if you want to keep the food out of the garden.

Pardon my conviction that a massive, theme park-like facility that serves beer should have food. Carry on.

I'm considering unfollowing this thread so I don't have to read this childish banter.

in the past when we've gone up to New Glarus we stop at one of the cheese places in town and buy some meat and cheese and crackers to eat while drinking on the patio at NG. Its simple, pretty quick and its good stuff. The Edelweiss cheese shop and Maple Leaf (across the street from each other) have anything you'd want in that vein.

How are the stacks of past r&ds looking today? Likely to be much left tomorrow?

So sorry that you think I'm trying to insult you... All I'm doing is trying to spread reason, so no need to get bent out of shape about it. I gave you one simple response and then you blew it up with a dramatic rant. Sorry that you're flabbergasted and mind boggled by this discussion...

Not sure why you make sure a big deal out of going into town. You do realize "in town" is less than 2 miles from the brewery, right? Such a hassle... But hey, I guess just ignore all the reasonable suggestions people were nice enough to share with you...

Ever consider that having on-site food requires personnel, a kitchen, licensing, and management? Perhaps they don't want to deal with all of that in order to solve such a minuscule problem.

I'm leaving this be, so that the rest of the people here don't need to deal with the complain train. No reason to waste people's time if you don't want to have a civil discussion. And no I don't own a business in NG, so you can keep your attitude and deflections to yourself... Mods, please proceed with cleanup and I apologize it got to this point.

Will be interesting to see if this year's R&D will still be priced at $15 or higher if/when they're put out next year.

Given the amount of leftovers I would think the price would stay the same. If they want it to last a while to draw people to the brewery I could see a price increase.

Too little too late on all points. Your primary impulse was to berate, and then involve the mods, because my view differs from yours. I've stayed on topic regarding my first visit to NG and offered a personal opinion as to an improvement, because I truly think it's a missed opportunity. But hey, again, I apologize for my being uncivil.
Yep, yep, yep, and...yep! Even mentioned as such. I'm very happy with others' suggestions and already mentioned considering them on a return trip if time permits, now that I've been to NG.
I'm curious whether there was any indication when these R&Ds were originally released as to how large these batches truly were. I was floored and beaming with excitement when I walked in and saw I could pick from such a selection last month. I'm even more floored there are still that many available!

I'd guess their staying power is probably due to both price and quantity--if you see one R&D, you're likely to want to buy as many as you can. But the full variety? It's hard to decide with budgetary and storage concerns. For a small crew of beer geeks on the first day of a 3-day beercation, car space was going to be tight.

Did they have Blacktop for sale yet? I know the beer calendar says next month but who knows?
