Was reminded tonight how deft is this brewery at a wide range of styles. Pruim is my new favorite of their fruited lambics, but they also excel at other traditional Belgian styles, have a great barrel program, and are on the short lists of best NW breweries for lagers, fresh hop beers, triple IPAs, everyday IPAs, etc. I could bore you to death with how I think they succeeded on their packaging.

However you define the "best" breweries in the region/nation/world, chances are this brewery is in the discussion. They're overdue for their own thread. What do you like about them and/or where do you think they could do better?

    They're amazing.

The only possible knock on 'em is that, if I want a pilsner, I'd rather have it via six-pack of cans or four-pack of tallboy cans. However, a Brewbound article from June says they're considering canning at some point, which has me excited.

I admittedly have a huge bias on this topic. Josh Pfriem was the OG brewer when Chuckanut opened here in town (obviously, under the ever watchful eye of Will Kemper). I got to know Josh and his wife Annie, a little bit, and they are both awesome folks. I am so happy for the success they have achieved, and, undoubtedly, will continue to achieve.

Personal notes aside: I think I made a strong case for them in the thread I started last winter about "best regional brewery". As stated above, they make great beer, across a wide variety of styles. By no means do I think they are a "perfect" brewery, but they ain't too far off that target either.

IMHO, yes, Pfriem deserves a permathread along side Fremont.

I really wish they'd can their Gose. It's one of my favorite beers, but have a hard time coughing up $5.99 for a caged and corked bottle.

I'm going to say the credit for that goes not to pFriem, but to The Great Society, an excellent design firm here in Portland:

(Although I will concede that the pFriem folks showed great taste in 1) picking a top-notch design firm and 2) giving them the room to do really great work.)

I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've had from 'em, from their lambic-style brews to their easy-to-find pilsner. Only knock against 'em is that I'd like to see more of their flagship offerings (e.g., IPA, pilsner, etc.) in a better to-go format, like 16oz 4-packs, or 12oz 6-packs... The single 500ml bottles just don't cut it, imo. If Pfriem is indeed considering canning, that'd be awesome.

I drink with my lady, so 500ml bottles are more annoying than anything. I'd but 10 times as much pfriem if they canned, whichever size they chose.

Adding their Mosaic pale to the wishlist for canned (and year-round rather than seasonal) beers.

Thanks for that info, Eric. As world class as their beer is I've always thought their branding was even better.

I like to change things up and try different things, and so I rarely want to buy the same beer every time at the store. That being said, if I don't find anything new or exciting to try, pFriem tends to always be my "fall back" position choice. Their pilsner in particular is something I'll always grab, no matter what I'm in the mood to drink. Outside of Upright and Victory back East (in particular their braumeister variants), I'm not sure I can name a better domestic pils.

Mary as well as Three Fates both come to mind. I admittedly haven't had a chance to try Heater Allen's pils yet, but once I see a bottle 'round these parts, I'll definitely grab at least one. Regardless of all that, I agree that pFriem has one of the better pilsners out there. (Now, just put it in a damn can...)

Likewise, have not been able to try those either (I don't think). What sort of distribution does the three fates see (as I'm always interested in trying a good new pils)? I still make it up to Tacoma fairly often, and don't recall ever seeing it on tap. That being said, I was checking my notes from my HM visit, and noticed that I did get to try a pils there. My recollection was that it was quite excellent, but I don't remember enough about the experience to compare it to pFriem.

As for the Mary, either I've never tried it, or the experience wasn't so memorable that I can recall trying it. I know it wasn't on tap last time I visited HF, and I simply can't recall if I had a chance to try it during a Philly beer week HF event (I went to several).

I noticed that @Texwild "liked' this post.

I think I can happily speak for the majority here, in that we all have had the best thoughts with Tex over these last few weeks. We all likely all have had someone effected by the recent events. I'm sure that all the Regulars here join me in welcoming him home, and hope that his losses were minimal.

    Cheers buddy.

absolutely in the discussion based on my experiences. two weeks ago on a hot night, 8 of us sat around a bar with a fine tap list and all independently ordered the pfriem pilsner. my dog walker generously gifted me their kumquat farmhouse ale with no context other than the simple explanation - "it's my favorite beer right now". their pilsner is an absolute draft staple at capitol hill bars. oh, and great bottles are always available at grocery stores. their packaging? unique, informative, and attractive.

i don't mean to fan boy so hard, but pfriem reaches such a wide audience and does everything so spectacularly well that it's hard not to consider such an operation as an absolute breakthrough in craft beer.

Would love it if their triple IPA became more available. Had a couple times on tap so far and good lord is it good!

pFriem IPA and Pilsner are two of my absolute favorites, as is the Belgian Strong Dark and pretty much everything else they do. Apparently I'm in the minority, but for me the 500ml bottles of IPA and Pilsner are perfect. If they do can I hope it's in 16oz/4-packs OR they also keep the 500ml bottles.

It seems like their TIPA is just an after thought for them, even though it's easily in my top 5 for best TIPA's I've ever had. I can't even remember the last time I saw it on tap (has to be close to a year now).

For most other breweries, the ability to make a beer like that would be a crowning achievement. Yet for pFriem, it really seems to just an after thought for them.

Pretty sure the TIPA is only released once a year, around the time PtY comes out.

pFriem is the Block 15 of the Gorge. They both make a wide range of styles very well.

Hmmm, not having any experience with Block 15, but, that's some high expectations.
