When someone sends you 32 oz of liquid hops, there's only one realistic response: challenge accepted!

Drinking Samuel Adams Octoberfest. Second bottle of this year, I tend to only buy one bottle since it doesn't strike me all that different from other modern amber lager beers but the local monopoly was out of Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier so I bought another. The beer strikes me as less dry this time around after drinking a pale Swedish Export before it, last time I drank it as the first beer of the night and it seemed less sweet. There is a strong caramel malt flavor and this is probably the most prominent flavor aside from the sweetness. Some hop bitterness is there in the background and helps maintain a balance of sorts. I don't mind sweetness in a seasonal beer, in this respect it reminds me of some Swedish Christmas lager beers which tend to be sweeter. It's tasty for what it is, but for my tastes it's just too much in the "modern amber lager" camp, which is a style I hardly ever buy.

This is Mikkeller Kihoskh Brett IPA, brewed for my favorite beer store, Kihoskh. This will be my closer, which means I got a whole days worth of drinking in on Page 1! Woohoo?

Drinking Mariestads Dunkel. A 5.8% abv dark lager from one of the Swedish macros. Malts are pilsner, caramel malt and melanoidin afaik. Aromawise it is quite similar to the Samuel Adams Octoberfest with the caramel malt being the stand out aroma. Flavorwise it is significantly drier with a more noticable bitterness (their other seasonal, slightly higher abv beers tend to be 30IBUs and this tastes similar to those) but the caramel malt is still the stand out flavor. The aftertaste is dry with a mild but refreshing bitterness. It's yet another "modern amber lager" albeit with lower sweetness and higher bitterness, but where is the brewery character? When you drink the pale Export strenght beers from this brewery there is no doubt you are drinking their beers, they have their own brewery specific character, when I drink this beer I'm reminded of countless craft breweries, foreign and domestic. It becomes generic instead.
