Just wanted to let Surly lovers in the Rochester area that there is Furious Black at the Apollo next door to Best Buy. Picked up a bottle today for 7.99.

I don't understand why Surly thinks they can sell a bomber of essentially Furious with some dark malt for the same price I can get a 4pk of 16oz cans of regular furious for $8-9 at most places. it is just under 3x the price.

Yeah, hard pass for me mostly due to the bottle format.

I can't tell are you both serious? (no /s tags at the end of your comments). I guess I just can't support a business that is intentionally trying to rip off their customers.

I do. They've been allowed to 'get away' with selling over-priced offerings for a very long time by their fans/customers who have forked over the money for them. IMHO, most of what they put in bottles over the years have been overpriced (including Darkness)

Ditto. I'm a longest time Surly fan, but it's the rare "black IPA" that gets more than a sniffle of approval. I'd have bought a single, but a bomber? No thanks.

Omg, I am sorry! I read your guys' posts too quick, I somehow read 'hard to pass' not 'Hard pass'. Thinking you wont be passing on it. kinda embarrassed now. haha

    1. Furious Black IPA is very good, easily one of the best Black IPAs I've ever had.
    2. Black IPAs get a bum rap, I suspect because they are a modern invention, were a fad for a while, and some people can't get over the oxymoronic name, but many of them are very good (and highly rated). Black IPA is one of my highest-rated styles on average (at the other site).
    3. For a variety of reasons, most large-format bottles are a bad deal compared to 12-ounce and 16-ounce alternatives. Furious Black is priced competitively by large-format bottle standards. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to pay 36 cents per ounce for packaged beer, but that complaint could be leveled against 90% of the 22-ounce and 25.4-ounce beers on the market.
    4. If you are willing to pay 36 cents per ounce for a beer, and you don't harbor ill will toward Black IPAs, Furious Black should not disappoint.
    5. It would be great if they canned it. Perhaps if the response is good to the 22-ounce bottles, they will.

13.99 Prairie Trail and 14.99 Downtown Hy-Vee. I agree this is one of the very best black IPAs, only draft Boulevard Grainstorm and Firestone Walker's Wookey Jack can stand up to it. But these bomber prices in Iowa are insane. If it was $8-9 I'd buy but $14-15 is stupid for what it is. $5 more and it'd be on par with Darkness pricing. I don't understand, we've had cheaper Surly bombers before but Johnson Brothers may be doing something weird with mixed margins the way they do with TG sometimes.

Re formulated Blakkr? Three head's (brewer) down to one? Put it in a bomber instead of cans and charge $$$$.

Makes sense except that they already had an excellent black IPA as others have pointed out and stopped making it because it didn't sell.
They're essentiallay riding the furious and darkness hype train with this release and with Damien as well. They even distributed posters for shops to put up advertising the furious black, Damien and darkness trio.
As far as the beer, I'd say it's a middle of the road black IPA. I would be much happier if they brought blakkr back because that was excellent.

It wasn't long ago that Surly were the darlings of this forum and anyone saying anything negative was shouted down. Now they can do no right.

Furious Black is also around $7.99 in Wisconsin so I don't know what's going on down in Iowa. I bought one and will probably grab a couple more. I'm not big on Black IPAs but it's pretty good.

I too loved Blakkr. I suspect the Three Floyds connection is what's keeping it off the schedule.

Unfortunately it didn't sell because of the price- where have I heard that before! I always bought some, but would have bought more. It was a fantastic beer and I would love to see it re-appear sometime!
