To beat a dead horse, if the goal is really to take them through a journey of dark beers, I'd almost totally redo the list. If the goal is to drink some cool beers, then that's a different story. Cut the list in half regardless.

Just my two cents since you asked for input.

    From your original list I'd evolve it to something like this;

    Stone Xocoveza
Founders Porter (classic and excellent porter)
    Perennial Vermilion 2015
Prairie Pe-Kan or Avery Nuttiest Professor
    Founders KBS 2015 or 2016 (2016 preferred)
    Firestone Walker Stickee Monkee 2015
    Deschutes Black Butte XXVII
    Weihenstephaner Weissbier Dunkel
BCBS 16 or 14 (unless you want to potentially show what infection in 15 is like)

Still a lot of heavy hitters (BA and/or high ABV) in the list. You may consider doing two rounds a few months apart. First time through, show them generally milder beers, but introduce a couple of heavy hitters (like above). Second time move more towards the heavy hitters if they seem interested.

So it finally did happen last night, and I took some of the advice here and went with the following tasting, doing a bigger mix of styles than originally thought, and cut down on the bourbon barrel aged stuff.

BCBS was the biggest hit, with the 2015 (of course) being everyone's favorite vintage of the 3.

Vermilion and Xocoveza were also generally really enjoyed. Maudite was universally disliked. I had it on tap before and loved it, but something about this bottle was very syrupy.

I was personally most surprised by Even More Jesus, since I never had it before. I wasn't expecting to like it, but I thought it drank really nicely for a 12% beer and had some depth to the flavors.

$5.75 for that 2014 BCBS? holy shit! While I haven't had Maudite in a long time, I remember it being similar to La Fin and Don de Dieu, crisp and effervescent, so something with that bottle must be amiss, anywas...looks like it was a hit. thanks for sharing!

There's always the possibility that Maudite tasted the way it did because everyone had it in the company of the other beers.

Nicely done, great selection. EMJ is a tremendously great beer. Xocoveza, Black Butte, and BCBS are of course excellent also.

I dunno if there are bottling dates on it but I picked it up at Whole Foods so not sure if it's been sitting around a long time or not? It wasn't so much the taste - people thought it tasted really pleasant. But mid/finishing palate, it changed both in texture and in flavor. I distinctly thought it was weird that it thickened up towards the end of the sip.

Unibroue's yeast strain is kind of polarizing, as well.

So, did you find the Black Butte to be sour?

This is a good idea. If they are not very knowledgable about beer, it might be good to start smaller first and have a later event with better stuff.

At the very least, make sure you have a plan to shelve stuff if people start getting too trashed too early. The last thing you want to do is have everyone blitzed and opening rare stouts that they cant even taste.

You're right, it had been a long time since I had that beer so memories were fuzzy. It did have a little bit of tart element, but not as pronounced as I remembered. But the reason I did include it in the tasting is because I wanted to show what fruit adjuncts could do to beers.
